regarding your question about why the Marines always seem to be involved in these fights, there's a bunch of reasons. First and foremost, the US didn't have a standing army during most of the time period in question. The Army would be raised during wartime, but then disbanded after. Second, most of what we're talking about involved amphibious landings- the Spanish-American War was fought in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and The Philippines. All islands. Boxer rebellion- no direct land route from US to China, so again an amphibious landing. Haiti- another island. In that era, the Army was considered homeland defense, and the Marines were the expeditionary land forces of the Navy.

Im a Marine myself, and Dan Daly is a legend in the Corps. Personally i think its more badass that he got 2 medals of honor, and then had a rule implemented saying people could only get 1. It immortalizes him and smedley butler as the only men to ever get 2 MOHs in the corps, as they are essentially the Marine gods of legend. The medal isnt for personal valor. Its an award to recognize all service members who go above and beyond the call of duty. I was lucky enough to serve with a man whos father was a MOH recipient. Donald Ballard. We got to meet him after infantry school. Hes an incredible man.

Yes Dan Daly is where “c’mon you sons of bitches, you wanna live forever?” comes from. I joined the Marine Corps in November 2003, and some of what gets taught in boot camp is Marine Corps history, with tests and quizzes and everything. Pretty sure I did 'that' during the Crucible a long time ago. Where you have to run with full ammo cans for hours, mainly because the other events were occupied and that's the one I spent half the day on. In case people don't know, Crucible is the final test in Boot Camp. There's events that is seemingly random because you are split into teams doing each event. I had a small team so we can do a double rotation before another group finishes one. One of the events had damaged equipment, the one we were suppose to do next. This was known so we just stuck around at the Dan Daly event. The other group was massive to there was a desync in swapping so another group took our 3rd event. So we stayed for 4 events at Dan Daly. Needless to say it does make his feats more respectable when you start doing it for a prolonged period of time.

In America, we refer to the USMC as our "911" force - the people we send when someone calls for emergency help. America was involved in a LOT of sordid little fights in Central and South America - Mostly completely morally indefensible - during the early 20th century. The USMC were invariably the lead force in these incidents.

Yeah, I agree. While serving in the military for three decades I heard "it's not fair" from soldiers so many times I started asking random soldiers at random times to explain the difference between "what's right" and "what's fair" . I must have asked that question a 1,000 times and only one young, five foot tall, in combat boots, Army sergeant got it right. The US Marines have been involved in every conflict the United States has been in, especially the small ones. There was the Korean conflict in the 1800’s where the marines combines naval bombardment with land forces, there was also the conflict in Tripoli where the marines got their nickname leatherneck because they put leather on the collars of their uniforms to keep the sabers from the enemy from cutting their heads off. Then they also where standing in the capital Mexico City during the Mexican American war.

My grandfather fought in the trenches at Argonne Forrest. I have a copy of the letter he wrote to his brother, who was living in Oklahoma, describing his experience in France. My grandfather survived the battle, but that winter, they weren't allowed to build fires to dry out and stay warm. He developed pneumonia and was sent to a military hospital in the south of France. After they decided he could survive the trip, he was sent to a military hospital in the US where he stayed a very long time. That's where he wrote/sent his letter to his brother. I've made many copies of that letter and gave it to as many family members as I could because I don't want that letter to be lost or forgotten. Sadly, I never got to meet my grandfather because he died in his 60s from lung damage he received in France.

The reason the US mainly sent the Marines is because to use the Army you needed approval from Congress up until the 1960's the US President was able to deploy the Marines as he saw fit without the permission of Congress. Also because the Marines was an "expeditionary force" basically specifically trained to go overseas and fight offensively while being mostly self sufficient logistically.
@Plastikdoom
@Plastikdoom 10 месяцев назад
A Marine here Sgt Maj Daly is and forever will be a legend, for more context the initial battle in WWI, the British were up north of the Marines, the French too, but we significantly overlapped lines with the French. The main assault hit and the USMC took the brunt of it, and stopped it cold, we were shooting them at 1200 yds with rifles, some Germans later confirmed they were under fire from rifles from long range. And we were hitting them, we stopped them and the French retreated, leaving us alone on the line, and we held it. Counter attacked and won, we are almost always outnumbered, and counted out by everyone, but we always win, no matter the odds or cost. Why? Partly cause we can’t let down Dan Daly, Smedley Butler, our history, accomplishments and the idea of past Marines and what they have done, also cause that isn’t our style. And not what we do, we answer the call and win, no matter what. There isn’t a more fanatical and effective group on earth than us, and not for some king, emperor, or god, for other Marines and the US. For an idea and a belief. That’s more dangerous than anything else, truly believing in an idea, and dedicating to it, everything. Also in WWI General “Black Jack” Pershing. The overall commander of US forces, said “there is no deadlier weapon than a Marine with his rifle” a straight up quote from him, and he was an Army General. For those who don’t know we definitely got a professional rivalry with the army, we work together fine. But in off time, can get dicey, from each side, especially depending on how much we are both drinking and the amount of shit talking that happens, fights will occur, haha, after the fights, we drink more, together, and shit talk some more. But him giving that open quote, speaks volumes about what we did we are among the most feared, but still overlooked, underrated for some reason Force to ever exist, when we been stomping all over the planet. Doing as we will and are ordered to do. And no one can stop us. Anyone who doesn’t believe look at history, go find someone who fought us and is alive, and ask them, not many to ask, almost all we killed, those we didn’t, age has taken them and the numbers who survived us, very, very few. In Korea, a reinforced battalion caused over 4000 Chinese KIA, wounded, a stupid amount, hell the Frozen Chosin, took 8 Chinese divisions and sieving NK military all of it to push out nato, wish was guarded by one Marine Division, without air support, cause of weather, yes we stood up to over 8 full divisions, and pulled all surviving nato units out. Screening them, so we could keep our combat power intact and not be humiliated, then we kept holding the line ant what would become the DMZ. And we’re the instrument that forced the dirty communists to sign a peace treaty, when we stopped them again yes other NATO and American units fought. Pulled their weight, dod their job, but we did far above and beyond, as always and is expected, with less people and resources, and were outstanding, as always. USMC history is insane, well by definition we are the opposite of insane, as we do the same thing. While expecting excellence, and we always deliver, instead of the definition of doing the same and expecting different results.

Here's some facts for you, Recky: There were five individuals who were awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in World War I. All five of them were Marines, and contrary to popular belief, all five of them were awarded _two_ Medals of Honor; one each from the Army and the Navy. The difference is that all five of these men were awarded their Medals for a single action, while Daly and Butler were awarded theirs for distinct actions; the Boxer Rebellion and then Haiti for Daly, and Veracruz and also Haiti for Butler. Of those 5 Marines, only two died during the Great War and were awarded their Medals posthumously; Matej Kocak and John Pruitt. The remaining 3 - Louis Cukela, Ernest Janson, and John Kelly - survived and would live to be 67, 51, and 59 years respectively. Both Kocak and Pruitt were killed October 4th, 1918, by German artillery at the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge. The action for which Pruitt was nominated for his Medals was the capture of 2 enemy machine guns and 40 prisoners of war one day earlier on October 3rd; October 4th was his 22nd birthday. Officially, the reason for limiting a person to only being awarded a single Medal of Honor was in order to discourage reckless behavior ("I won it once, and I can do it again!"), specifically because of those 5 Marines (although looking at their actions, I would not describe any of them as "reckless," but hey, what do I know?). FYI the reason the marines get sent in on a lot of small incidents and brushfire conflicts is that they're the United States primary expeditionary force. As a formation they have two jobs: provide soldiers and security to the navy, and perform military operations staged from the navy to include landings and other expeditionary actions. In essence they're the ones that get sent in when a special forces team is too small or specialized and you need something with real mass, but not enough that we'd need to start throwing armored divisions and B-52s at the problem.

Bit late and can't remember if you've seen the barbary wars vid yet. But the main reason the marines are usually first. Is because it only takes a single signature to deploy them. The president can just say go, and 14 hours later an entire detachment will be on land. The other services require more people to sign off. Of course there are exemptiona like special operations that get sent out in small teams but they're really not "deployed".

Great reaction! “Potential” is one of the many other great videos from him. It will give you more history on the Marine Corps. & why it’s them that usually go out first. It’s also gives great insight on the history of the Navy, how it was started & when the U.S. started doing coups 😂 another must see is Jake ‘McNasty’ McNiece. Edit: on the McNasty video, you’ll want to wait until the end bc you get to see & hear from the man himself 😎

You should definitely do a reaction to his video about Sgt Reckless next. It’s a horse that became a Sgt in the Marine Corps in Korea, yes… a horse.

It’s “always the marines first” because the President alone can send the Marines. The Army/Navy/Air Force take congressional approval to send somewhere

Also yes. Everything isn’t a war crime the first time, and any war can be great, if you try hard enough.

Not just the Marines, I was in the Army, and I was in Honduras during the Honduran-Nicaraguan conflict and in El Salvador during their civil war, both in the mid to late 80s' then I didn't go to Panama, but some of my friends did, and after that was Desert Shield/Storm then I was discharged.

Recky. First, the Medal of Honor is not like a knighthood. Second, the Medal of Honor is not a political award but the US Military's highest award for gallantry in action, consider it our version of Britain's Victoria Cross. That law was mainly enacted to prevent people from winning the Army and Navy Medal of Honor for the same action. That part of the law remains but the rest was quickly revoked and a soldier can receive the Medal of Honor as many times as they earn it except now, I believe, a soldier only receives one actual Medal of Honor and upon the award of multiples receives a device or clasp to wear with it to indicate multiple awards similar to Britain's Victoria Cross.

Hey Recky, I would recommend all of them. But the 1 that gets me is the Winter Soldier who ODs on Meth. I am going to be perfectly honest. I never heard of the Winter war until I ran accross this video and I love learning and why I started watching Fat Electrician and after watching them all. I started watching others reactions and it is cool to see how others Accross the pond veiws are.

You should react to more American videos, we have so many different expressions just because of our culture and legacy(my great grandfather was Swedish and we still have our great great grandparents recipes from the old country, even though I look black it's shocking to people outside of America to think that haha) One of the best natural traits I think we have is the ability to make dumb things smart, and smart things dumb. It's a blessing and a curse

Recky, part of the reason the Marines are always going to these hot-spots was that before the war on terror and the slowly increasing power of the US President, it would take an act of Congress to send any other branch of the US Military in to conflict. The Marines can be sent in as an expeditionary force, by the President, without Congress having to give permission.

Fyi medal of honor requires a vote of Congress. The full title is infact the Congresional Medal Honor. Most who win it died to do so. It and the Purple Heart (1st for Valor and later being wounded) are often called the two medals you don't want because the price is too high.
