A Tale of Cancellation: A Conversation with Meg Smaker (Episode

Sam Harris

Sam Harris speaks with Meg Smaker about the controversy around her documentary, "The Unredacted (Jihad Rehab)." They discuss her background as a firefighter; the effect that 9/11 had on the firefighting community; her subsequent adventures in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia; the deprogramming of jihadists; the organized campaign to silence her film; the capitulations of Sundance, SXSW, and other festivals; and other topics.
Before becoming a filmmaker, Meg Smaker served as a firefighter for over a half-decade. She spent almost 10 years living and working in the Middle East, five of them in Yemen, where she learned Arabic and studied Islam while teaching firefighting to Yemeni men.
As a filmmaker, Meg explores controversial subjects from unorthodox viewpoints. Her films have won numerous awards, including Best Short Documentary at SXSW (South By Southwest) and a Student Academy Award. Her film, Boxeadora, received critical acclaim as “one of the best boxing films of all time” by Paste Magazine. Meg was also featured in the Hollywood Reporter’s “Next Gen” issue as one of the film industry's most promising new nonfiction filmmakers, and just this year Filmmaker Magazine named her one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Meg’s most recent film, Jihad Rehab-her début feature-length documentary-premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

She makes a great point, around the hour mark, how it is better to have plenty of time to interview someone, to ask about the persons backstory (or things that aren't even considered necessarily relevant). Versus a journalist that has to dive right into tough questions because they are limited by a deadline. I think that's a hindrance to traditional journalism, hitting the tough questions right off the bat. Getting to know the subject beforehand gives you context as to why someone may think the way they do. Better yet, it saves the interviewer from potentially asking questions in a way that offends the interviewee, or causes them to shut down. Plus it shows empathy, rather than just treating a person like their the next story to be capitalized on. It seems like it's a minor thing, but i bet establishing a good rapport with someone first, goes a long ways towards gathering information and for overall honesty.

Absolutely amazing. Thank you Sam for sharing your platform and providing Meg a place to plead her case and inform the world of her struggle. Stay strong Meg, the only one's who need to apologise are Sundance, the Gutless Capitulators and the dogmatic lynch mob.

As somebody that doesn’t necessarily agree with you always, respect Sam. I love your mind. You’ve been a voice of reason in many different scenarios and a vital component of my ability to think critically. It’s a shame to see how divided this audience has become when there is so much agreement on nuanced topics here. Perhaps you see the WEF and their correlatives as a non-issue, but many of your followers don’t. It would be great if you could explicitly address how you see their role, because it’s easy to assume the worst with the absence of direct comment from you. Thank you and all the best

Agree on this a lot. While I hate cancel culture, I've come to dislike most of the so-called intellectual dark web too. Sam is the only person that I find to always stick to his principles, even if I don't agree with them all the time.

@@pathologicaldoubt the logic is that most politicians in almost every country are acting in such clear self interest and the interest of elites, while actively punishing and subjugating their voters, that it's becoming difficult to ignore the possibility that they're operating under ulterior motives. The great reset is the only theory that's been posited with a significant deal of evidence and correlation. It's hard to chalk self interest on such a wide scale to simple politics when it's so degrading to the founding principles of our democratic economies and flies in the face of what we were raised to believe is the equitable and reasoned world we have the right to believe in. Much easier to believe that these actors are deliberately being malicious and the great reset explains how that could be the case. Hopefully not feeding a troll here but regardless, that's the logic.

@@pathologicaldoubt wow a conspiracy theory now is it! its not like they are openly screaming how they have penetrated western governments (and all of the places they have have curiously been a horror show ever since), how you will eat bugs, and are behind the esg fraud that has netherlands take the lands from its citizens, and DIRECTLY caused sri lanka blowing up immiediately after implementing it. do me a favor and take a look at the places in the world that has 98, 99% esg score, and see if you notice any particular trend. turns out its easy to have a low esg score if you run economically infeasable, inefficient practices and blow up in depressions and lose about all of their industrial capacity shortly after implementing them...

I'm not hearing any audio. Anyone else having this issue, or only me? Edit: So bizarre. I just hopped onto my laptop, and began hearing sound. Then, I hopped *back* over to my cellphone, and it's silence again. I just listened to Lex Fridman's newest John Danaher podcast mere moments ago and then clicked another subscription's content after that, so it's not a universal issue on the cell. Odd...

Wow I started listening at bed time and could not stop listening. Meg you are a force of nature and deserve better, life can be so unfair and unjust. But it can be a better world when people like you do things that are important and challenge groups and powerful interests. I will be donating to your site when I wake up after my much delayed sleep it’s nearly 3am so goodnight and thank you again for your story and struggle.

This is so fucking sad and dangerous. This talented, smart, brave badass woman didn't deserve this cancel culture bullshit. Full disclosure I've not seen the film yet from listening to this woman for 3 hours its obvious to me she wasn't going to make an anti Islamic film. I admire her courage and her huge heart. Thank you Sam for giving her some more exposure. I will absolutely donate to her gofundme.
