It's not just the JS1175, Dan made a long video tearing apart ReaComp. And Cockos responded by implementing everything he suggested in the next update.
Exactly! I initially talked about that part too but cut it cuz the vid was getting long. Reaper took 1 week to implement changes and we've all moved on. Harrison took one year to make a snide comment and 3 extra months to send a couple of PR-trained dudes to go on a talk show.
@@IDDQDSound I think it is spite...the truth means to these people "I can get the 3 series BMW but I wanted the 7 Series BMW! ....Dan did this!!." Im a boomer mixed at ascap on analogue. Life 101movie. Love digital. But science...is science and DAN has a method. Bad code is bad code. I have plugins I love that have some of the worst code ever btw. cpu hogging bitch code. And it seems this is codified Open Source with a UI and a marketing team.
Nothing but excellent points here. I respected Cockos even more after reading Justin's blog post in response to Dan's video. My interactions with Beatskillz, Antelope Audio, and a host of other companies who won't own up to mistakes (or in some cases, like the eMastered ATOM "AI-powered" synth, have been pushing straight snake oil) make me value companies who are willing to listen to critiques and improve as a result.
As a boomer (I say I’m not, but my son says I am) I have only recently discovered and subscribed to your channel and love it. Just wanted to say what a breath of fresh air you are! Thank you.
No one messes with Dan! Critical constructive feedback can be hard to take but it's there to help improve something. Especially if it is less subjectivive and you are using measurement tools to show the results. Bitwig nearly trashed their reputation recently and only just survived after finally listening to their community; even then that will have been too late for some. Great video!
@@IDDQDSound They were going to charge separately for a spectral effects suite- for users who were promised updates and addons per their EULA. They fixed it within a week and also promised that there'd be no separate charges and any updates would be include for users within their year update package.
Harrison Mixbus isn't even their own DAW really, as far as I understand. It's pretty much a mod of the open-source DAW Ardour. _"Both projects are free software (GPL) sharing the code-base, however Harrison’s DSP is a proprietary plugin that is bundled with the binary"._ So you are paying for the mod. I have no problems with that, but it's one hell of an expensive mod (especially Mixbus32c). The fact that they try to excuse their exaggerated marketing claims with "our consoles are just as clean and precise as our plug-ins" is just laughable. They should know that most people who buy plug-ins like these know what the differences between analog modelled plug-ins and clean digital plug-ins are.
You know, I didn't touch on that part of their business model in this video cuz it was already too long and felt irrelevant, but yeah that part doesn't sit so well with me either if I'm honest.
Actually, I found your video very informed (I saw all the Dan Worrall videos on this) I appreciate the review, comments and clarity. Saved me a lot of money
Amazing video as always. Though the next time I might refrain from reading your video notes, as I used one mental process throughout the whole duration trying to see what spot did you miss while shaving :D
Great video 👍 Dan's the man. I really hate the way that these days the opinions of people who don't know shit are somehow believed to be just as valid as the opinions of people who know their shit.
I disagree with that statement , dan isn"t an authority and he also promotes waves plugins that have worse deceptive marketing than harrison . Like I said on other discussions if you listen to dan"s bancamp , there is no evidence that the shit that he knows translate in good mixing results
@@chrisrevel2801 I personally like his music style a lot, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the mixes are always stellar and crisp to my ear. Also check out the Renegade Brass Band, whom he produces for. The mixes are baller and the music is really good too and really different from his originals. I think I am very knowledgeable yet my mixes aren't really good so I agree that knowledge doesn't always equal good results, but in Dan's case, it's quite undeniable that it does imo.
@@chrisrevel2801also don't like Dan's music or mixes, but knowing the facts, rules, and science allows you to break those rules and make mixing decisions that might be deemed "crazy" but sound good on purpose, rather than by accident. Not everything he says is objective, so it's ok to disagree with the subjective stuff, but the objective stuff, which is backed up with scientific examples, should be accepted until otherwise rebutted with better or more reasonable information
You know what's hilarious about REAPER? Kenny Gioia is extremely successful as a mixer. And they never advertise it. I only found out when I randomly looked at his bio on his site one day.
Great video. I’ve been following this convo since it started. I have been using Mixbus for 2 years and REALLY like it (despite the many bugs). It beats the crap out of Pro Tools but not nearly as stable or ironed out. After 35 years on Pro Tools, working on what feels like a real console is a joy. And it sounds better too. But their claim about “every resistor and capacitor” and their defensive reaction to Dan’s review really upset me. They could do a lot better. Mixbus IS a very good DAW but still in Beta, if you want my honest opinion. They should be eager to get feedback and step up to the challenges that come with that.
Very well put. The point here is the misleading marketing and Harrison’s inability to humbly admit they are wrong, not just factually as per product but ethically as per their lies. It’s made me think twice about what I’m buying. I’ve not got time (or the expertise) to test everything on Plugin Dr. so trust Dan’s scientific reviews. There’s no harm aiming for a bit of analogue saturation on some tracks through digital means , it’s cheaper and more space saving than buying a Revox R2R, but no one wants to be wasting money on rubbish that doesn’t distort as stated and May in fact introduce narly aliasing artefacts.
Yeah at this point I doubt they would ever admit to much. For Saturation I'd still say it's better to have a dedicated plugin vs getting it from another plugin though
I saw the ratio on the Lonely Rocker video and I weighed in. This was a marketing catastrophe for both Harrison and Lonely Rocker whose independence regarding Harrison products is now trashed. My comment on the LR video was fair and as my main source of income is as a marketing consultant I tried to explain what a disaster this was and that thy should pull it. In the response I got from LR he accused Dan of "sending an angry mob to attack a business" and earlier is his response to me he characterised them as being 'rabid' whilst denying he was being arrogant. I just don't think LR is used to being taken on and hopefully he is wiser and a bit more humble for it. I think he got carried away with whatever this new ambiguous relationship with Harrison is. Dan posted a short called "Not Cool" and it was perfect, he identified and disowned the nastier comments and he thanked those who posted constructively and LR responded quite well but again without taking responsibility for what most people were pissed off about. I hope there's no lasting damage to his channel, that wouldn't be fair, if Harrison have a marketing manager they need to be dealt with for allowing this to even happen. It was a predictable disaster. Cockos without much fanfare or making claims they can't back up are slowly becoming the market leader, they will be the industry standard in the near future and they deserve it, I've been a PC+Cubase user since since the pre PC Atari days but the 2 years it took them to be Silicone compliant and the worse than ever support forced me too look elsewhere and Reaper was the final choice. It's at the point now where I just got a new Mac and haven't even installed Cubase on this one.
Yeah very unfair of LR to criticize Dan, especially since he never really spoke about him, until that short where he came to his defense. Despite what I say in this video, I don't think the guy is evil or anything, and neither is anyone at Harrison. It just feels like they're in a hole and can't stop digging. I wish they would just say "the Gain-Q relationship of our EQ is perfectly matched to the rack unit" and that would be true and not in any way less impressive than the whole every transistor sentence :)
@@IDDQDSound the first sentence in my response to LR's response to me started with 'If you're in a hole stop digging' so we agree on that. I thought you were fair too. Let's hope they learn and review their marketing too.
Great stuff, love the very sarcastic edge of your arguments. This thing is quite ridiculous, but luckily we have people like Dan who make extensive use of the Plugin Doctor and in a matter of seconds shatter that perverted expectations of ''every transistor and capacitor'' inside. Glad you brought up the way Cockos/Justin reacted; hope people can learn how it's absolutely perfect, if not even cathartic, to admit a mistake, fix it and have a laugh about it!
and I count both you and Sensei Worrall amongst the very most respectable and talented at teaching from real unadulterated hardearned knowledge and skill. thank you so much for all I've learned from you already and all that is to come, it's ofimmense worth.
Thanks so much. As usual - your vid is fascinating, informative with a very intelligently stated argument. Kudos to both yourself and Dan the man. Next lifetime I want to be a combination of both of you - a highly intelligent, gifted and talented musician and producer! Yay!
Most Reaper DAW users know that the name is an acronym but it is also a reference (I intuit) to the world's first anti-virus also named Reaper. Watched a video on the Reaper anti virus and considering Justin Frankel's previous works it all clicked! What you choose to do with this useless information is totally up to you! Cheers :)
Thanks Evert! I'm making a second video in response to your great comment on my community post a few weeks ago! Not sure if you saw the video on Radial menus yet.
@@IDDQDSound yeah I did see that post. Interesting approach, but I don’t know if I want to invest the time to change my workflow. Anyway, right now I’m using a small room to do a little bit of mixing - if that - now and then, still working on my attic studio. Should be operational in January.
I worked on a Harrison MR4 console back in the 80's. Loved the EQ and the routing on the console was a bit daunting. It had about the most surgical on-board EQ in the business at the time. That being said, ALL the EQ's that I currently have in my plugin bay blow that EQ away. I've always tried to get the truest, uncolored sound capture that I could achieve with the technology I had available. I do a lot of live capture recording these days and my goal is always to get the most accurate capture of the event that I can in the resulting recording.
You could have left that last 30 seconds out imo. This is the first I've watched your channel and as a reaper user I must say Bravo. You were right on point and that's all that matters. Some will agree and some will disagree. Bottom line is you are helping people who are willing to listen to FACTS. Ones who disagree are not owed a closing statement because they want to stay stuck on turtle time. Thanks fam.
As humans we all make mistakes, Programming, etc. This thing that I have found about Reaper, Justin and the community is they are honest and just say we messed up and fix the issue, and sorry we will do better next time.
I was so impressed with your video, all the points you made, your observations, critiques and everything else; until you mentioned that you only have 6K subscribers (well, 6K +1 now). Very cool... very cool.
Actually I think Dan Worrall does use his ears. Of course he approaches plugins from an engineer angles but I've heard him say several times that this or that, even not the most correct thing technically, if it sounds good then it's good.
Absolutely. I hope It didn't come across that I'm saying he doesn't use his ears or that it's something you shouldn't do. I'm just saying, if I'm tryna prove something beyond doubt I'm gonna try and eliminate the subjective element of hearing.
Spot on. I agree on all points. Harrison really tarnished their brand with these marketing guys who denigrate and argue with everyone on the net. I like analog emulations, and I also have plugin doctor, so as long as the plugin does what's advertised, it doesn't matter to me if it sounds exactly like anyone's particular piece of gear they worked on in person. If it checks out well in plugin doctor and sounds nice, then I will likely use it.
01:45 I do fully agree with you. That stuff "ahh he hides because he doesn't show his face" is so stupid and senseless. Annoying illiteracy. It's important what Dan SAYS not how he looks. Misleading marketing ...
What are you talking about? You need to put your face in every single item Background next. Otherwise you're just a newborn who didn't make my favorite mod to Reaper interface 😒
Good video! Was wondering what was going on with dan worral and harrison after seeing only the bits of story around. This was a nice wrap Also, Türkiyeden selamlar
Harrison Mixbust. not the smartest team in the game. if they were they would just stop addressing this mess and issue an apology. furthermore, coming at Dan Worrall like that is like getting way to drunk and telling a pro fighter to go outside. go home Harrison, you're drunk.
Great video with great points. Although amused and disappointed that you addressed all of the issues as a consumer and not as a scientist... while criticizing anti vaxxers who do the same. I once took a music class and got a D minus, so I guess I shouldn’t question any of the audio engineers claims about their plugins since I’m not an expert and they are.
The D minus comment was to indicate that a lot of the people who are against certain medicine don't actually have an interest nor expertise. If you're interested and just didn't score high on a test, your opinion matters. Also music is a subjective artistic endeavor. Science is anything but :)
Great video man 👍 ...I saw your video about creating a tape stop effect(on your whole project) in Reaper. I was wondering if you could post a template or let me know where to download the skin you use?
@@IDDQDSound yes! That's what I meant. You have what looks to be a lot of really useful toolbars. I actually don't need my skin to resemble another daw or anything. I have other daws(and maschine) I use for production when im fleshing out ideas with midi and synth/sample based instruments, but I'd like to try doing more inside of reaper. Reaper is absolutely just the most intuitive tool for recording and mixing. I'd like to see if that translates for me to production work as well. Your toolbars look pretty handy 👍. Also...you should think about a side gig in comedy lmao. You're funny man... it keeps attention pretty well.

Little side-note. Dan Worrall (as far as I understand it) very well uses his ears for the first evaluation. But as he knows, the bias of having human senses, is a tricky thing, he then confirms or debunks the things he was or wasn't hearing. So it still goes if something sounds good but doesn't look good in an analyzer, he will also defend it. (As he alsways states himself: mix with your ears, not your eyes) But he takes his and by extention also our bias out of the equasion. (Yes my point was nitpicky as hell XD )
@@IDDQDSound Sry, Wasn't my intention to by hypercritical of you. This subject has been such a controversy and everyone has strong feelings about it. And well I am no better in that regard. Also very interested to where this whole discussion is headed, since Dan Worrall and one of the Harrison-Guys had a very lengthy discussion below his last shorts video... Nevertheless nice video like always.
I love your channel Arya, and hope to hear more from you in the future (when you're ready of course) its re-invigorating my desire to really get under the hood of reaper a bit more re: dan worrall harrison....i think its all about framing...if there's people like Dan taking time and being careful about analysing a plugin, it can be seen as really useful for the audio community as a whole...Justin called himself an idiot..but he's not, I'm guessing i think he's grateful that there's someone with experience of both the old and new recording worlds out there who cares enough to point out things to improve, despite any criticism they get.
Question everything. Just because someone calls themselves Scientists or doctors doesn't mean they know something or excludes them from some agenda. Just as an example, once Cigarettes were good for you as promoted by doctors and scientists.
Yes. Just because someone calls themselves a doctor doesn't mean anything, but someone who studies medicine for 12+ years certainly has a bigger claim to the title I'd think. Re: The Cigarettes example, I don't think there was something malicious about that. The long term effects of cigarettes were not studied, and when those effects came to light, things changed quickly. Science makes mistakes, but I don't agree that the global science community is maliciously trying to call things they know is bad as good. There are some who do for money but it's not a majority.
No I still believe that a global community of medical professional wouldn't unanimously be on board with giving people bad advice. Also we're far enough past the peak of the pandemic that we now know for sure the vaccinations worked and far fewer people get the disease despite the fact that human activity has fully resumed normal.
I share your feelings about how Harrison has dealt with this. Who wants to work with people that are not willing to admit something was wrong in their marketing AND coding, while it's been demonstrated without any doubt? And this "showing the face thing", I think it's bullying, nothing more. And we know bullying is plain wrong.
It's actually amazing how measured Dan was in his response. They straight up lied. Every transistor, etc. is just a straight up lie by people trying to swindle their less informed costumers.
lack of paid experience from industry standard recording protools studios doesn't let me responsibly judge if I can or cannot give you a thumb up ........just joking, ofc your points are valid, glad you made a non-bullshit coverage ;)
you can trust my grandpa-ears violated by unlimited use of a walkman with headphones in the 80ties.. you can believe me .... there are no sounds beyond 15kHz. doesn't matter what your dog reacts to.
How can I take this garbage seriously when you do not even have a console behind you?! And you yourself pointed out that one needs to use one's ears. You admitted you don't. So no console, the thing with meters, numbers, indicators etc. and no ears are far as I can tell, behind your hippie long hair. I myself have taped over the meters on my console, blacked out all numbers with a sharpie, super-glued my eyes shut and taped my finders together while I mix. On top of that I have corked my ears and locked myself in the shower while I mix to keep things real, and I question anyone who does anything differently for only that way is pure. ll jokes aside, very good video. You layed that situation out very well!
As a user of Harrison Mixbus DAW, which seems to do the analog summing... Idk why the plugin that claims to do it, does not. And then they just double down and tell us not to believe our lying ears and eyes... Yeah, okay. I'll keep using the DAW, so long as it keeps doing transistor modeler summing. I won't buy those ripoff plugins tho.
@@IDDQDSound Glenn Fricker did that a while back, and it impressed me so much I bought a copy. Sad to see them go so far off the reservation with the plugin that claims to encapsulate that sound for any DAW. I was debating buying it to use in Reaper, but oh no, after Dan's video and the various reactions and breakdowns of the aftermath, never. I'll renew my license when they add new features that I actually use. So far, that hasn't happened since v6, and they're on v8. They finally fixed the midi issues it inherited from Ardour in v7, but I use Reaper for initial tracking and to mix track folders. I just like the way final mixes of stems turn out with the way the interface works, and the summing is nice, but kinda tertiary, in terms of importance, but I like that, too, admittedly.
Nice. Btw, Harrison isn‘t perfect, I agree, but they do create some good stuff. You can get plenty of alternatives as well. A shame their best products are out of the reach of most people, which are their film mixing consoles(digital for over 20 years). I had moved on from Dans video 10 minutes after I‘d seen it. Why did they feel the need to make silly claims in front of experienced, knowledgeable engineers is beyond me.
Agreed that they make good products. I mean they are legends in the business and their reputation speaks for itself. Even the 32c plugin isn't necessarily a bad plugin, just marketted in a weird way :)
Cramping is the scientific term for this. As a filter approaches the nyquist frequency (samplerate/2) one side of the filter's Queue has to cramp in order to get back to 0dB at nyquist. Check out the linked video for a 3 hour video on it by my good buddy Leandro. He codes both types of filters in real time and you will learn lots by it!
i think you're spot on, but i would refrain from making that a generational thing, because this whole anti-boomer stuff became way too political when it was hyped up in the first place. i actually noticed how it made me become rude towards boomers in general. when i noticed that i immediatly stopped calling things boomer stuff. because in the real world most boomers are alright. it's just internet folk that can be a little edgy, but that's true for every generation
Absolutely and I really didn't mean for that one word to be the takeaway of the video. In my defense, literally no one ever makes it to the end of my videos according to RU-vid analytics :)
@@IDDQDSound lol my statistics say the same. yet when i dropped a long video about my new plugin lately people reacted to some of my final words in the comments. what's up with attention spans lately?
Harrison has good ideas and tools but bad marketing. All the plugins are glorified for no reason. They get the job done, but the advertising is from the same era as their first consoles..😅 Mixbus is based on Ardour and they should mention that more clearly.🧐😆
Never go off of just your ears. But also be conscious of what scopes you’re using. Personally I find iOS garage bands 3band EQ to be infuriating and inaccurate results can occur based on the inputs. Definitely DO use scopes though because most of us doing this for fun or in the early stages don’t own good monitoring equipment, or can’t afford it
Agreed 100 percent. I saw you asked Dan Worrall about the iOs EQ too. If I figure out a way of hooking up my partner's iPad to my Mac without paying for an interface I'd do a test ;)
@@IDDQDSound I’ve been trying the best I can to make a track worth releasing on my phone and boy is it hard with only stock sounds and stock plug-ins but I think I’m almost there now after this weekend 🙏🙌😅
For me the ironic crux here is this is a product of engineers and programmers who use scopes and measurement devices to design/model software on hardware.....they didn't 'use their ears' to model it. And beyond that if their claims and sales copy actually bore up to scrutiny when Dan lifted the hood for a look and called them out they wouldn't be so butt-hurt.
you’re wrong about ears. they can process so much more than a computer. try voice to text vs speaking to a person. that’s why we still need human mastering engineers around.
Great commentary and the best bit is that you smile all the way through. However, I have one criticism and that’s the “boomer” slur! Absolutely, not necessary to stoop so low as to be ageist by criticising an entire generation of your elders. Apology maybe?
Already did. it's not a slur though. It's a description of a generation as a result of a baby boom. I myself am a boomer as the baby boom in Iran happened in the 90s. Soo...not a slur and I am one.
@@GoGetFletch lol yeah I learned that you are incredibly condescending, and that a whole generation who complains about their favorite racist comedian getting cancelled are incapable of taking a joke. :)
Considering that many using these DAWS and plugins have no personal experience with the analog originals being emulated, videos arguing over the accuracy of an emulation are really pointless for most. Find a tool that gives you a sound you're looking for and move on. Period. While people hash out these discussions, the rest of us are simply making music.
I wouldn't say I love it personally. There's nothing about covid I like. It quite literally ruined my life. That said, anti vaxxers were around long before this pandemic :)
People at least metaphorically will get Git hub code codify it, change some code... put in a cheesy UI and sue you. Dan is the most honest around. Looking forward to more super helpful no-nonsense Reaper tutorials from you. Thank you, Arya.
Thanks Mika! Maybe it comes with territory to an extent. People who use reaper are probably more likely to have at one point questioned the validity of Pro Tools as the only DAW to use and switched, so we were allergic to bullshit to start with :)
I surely will not trust your ears until you show them! Why are you hiding them when you tell us that you like using them? If you like using your ears, show them!
