Democrats raise taxes on the wealthy and create programs that increase financial security for the middle class, usually building a surplus. Bill Clinton was incredible on the economy. Bush spent it all. The joke is that Democrats end up having to spend half their terms fixing everything Republicans broke, so they never get much opportunity to govern. To say nothing of the Republican obstructionism that began with Newt Gingrich refusing to do *anything* with Democrats, yet insisting on receiving government paychecks for doing nothing. My mom and stepdad are the most patriotic flag flyers I know, but they are lifelong Democrats, because they know BS when they see, and they can figure out pretty easily which party cares about them. He is a marine veteran and she is a hard working nurse, and if you speak against this country in their presence, they'll throw you out of the house. And if you try to hurt somebody less fortunate than you, they would be the first to step in and help. Neither of them has any time for DJ Trump. They saw through that mess years ago.
