I love this story and I see it as a heartfelt plea for compassion towards dumb animals which aren’t so dumb after all. God used the little donkey to admonish the human. The donkey was able to perceive clearly what the human couldn’t, namely, God’s will and angelic visitation. This story touches my heart when it tells how the little donkey turns round, looks at Bilaam with her eloquent eyes and pleads with him to behave like a mensch. “What have I done to you, that you’re mistreating me like this?” This is a reproach from God via the donkey, to upbraid all wicked humans for the way we routinely abuse our fellow beings, animal and human. As regards the implication of bestiality, there are depictions in Scandinavia of men having sex with mares, plus there are Greek legends of women having intercourse with bulls, eg Pasiphae, so maybe it was something that people did as part of some pagan religious rituals.

The story of Balaam's donkey was not Numbers 23. Close, though. It was Numbers 22:21-35. God had warned Balaam not to curse the Israelites in verse 12, so when he was offered money by Balak's officials, he declined it. God then told Balaam to go with them, but only do what he told him to do. The next day, he went with Balak's officials towards the Israelite camp. The donkey saw the angel with the sword 3 separate times, where it reacted in fear. The first time, it ran off the road and into a field. The second time, it was in a vineyard with walls on both sides. Balaam's foot was not stomped on by the donkey, but, the donkey pressed up against this wall and bruised Balaam's foot. The third time, they were in a narrow place with no other place to go. This was most likely an alley between buildings, but the Bible doesn't specify. This time, the donkey laid down on the ground. Each time, Balaam whipped the donkey. After the third time, it spoke, "What have I done to make you beat me these three times?" Balaam said, "You've made a fool of me! If I had a sword, I would kill you right now!" The donkey said, "Am I not your donkey, which you have ridden for many years? Have I had the habit of doing this to you?" Balaam said "No." The angel finally showed himself to Balaam, and Balaam bowed low on the ground. The angel said, "Why have you beaten your donkey 3 times? I have come here to oppose you as your path is reckless before me. The donkey saw me these three times and turned away. If it had not turned away, I would have killed you, but I would have spared the donkey." Balaam apologized and said, "I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. If you are displeased, I will go back." The angel said, "Go with the men, but say only what I tell you to say." Balaam tells Balaak that he could only say to the Israelites what God told him to say. Up through the end of chapter 24, Balaam continues going back and forth between the Israelites and Balak, blessing the Israelites 7 times, which confuses and angers Balak. Then Balaam and Balak went home. Balaam does nothing else after this. When the Israelites stayed in Shittim in chapter 25, they became sexually immoral with the women there. The women also encouraged the Israelites to worship and make sacrifices to their idol of Baal. Moses told the Judges to kill any Israelite who had worshipped Baal. When an Israelite had brought a Midianite woman before Moses and others who were in a meeting. Aaron's grandson Phineas left the assembly, took a spear, and followed this man and woman into a tent, and stabbed them both simultaneously through the stomach. The man was Zimri, son of Salu, leader of the Simionite family. The woman was Kozbi, daughter of Zur, a tribal chief in the Midionite family. God then instructed the Israelites to kill all Midionites. After the death of Zimri and Kozbi, the plague that the Israelites had been suffering, ended, but it had already claimed the lives of over 12,000 men, not including women and children.

God seams to like animals being slaughtered. Which is strange as he apparently created them and has power over life and death anyway.

Poor little donkeys! Any rider larger than a child is bigger than them. Anyone who spends time with animals can develop a relationship where there is a level of communication though actual spoken words are unlikely. I suppose it would also depend on the language of the human. English speakers say cats say "meow" which can become "me-now" when they are offered food, etc.

It’s a lovely and touching story. The dumb animal is dumb no more, and she admonishes the wicked man: he can’t see the angel, yet the donkey can. The donkey has more virtue than the human. She looks at him out of her big eyes and asks “What have I done to you, that you should mistreat me? Haven’t I carried you faithfully all my life, and now you’re threatening to kill me.” Shame on Bilaam. We should be kind to animals and all innocent, gentle beings. Even a donkey may speak God’s holy truth. Ps There are ancient carvings in Scandinavia of men apparently having sex with horses. Maybe the donkey said "stop beating me", and/or "this really hurts" (paraphrasing), in the same way a dog says "I love you" and/or "thank you"? Sometimes animals create sounds with their voices that sound very similar to actual human expressions, we all know donkey's can't talk, but we also know if God wills it, than anything is possible. Maybe God didn't will the donkey to talk, but gave billam the ability to understand the language of the donkey?

I assume the talking donkey was intended to represent a political figure of the time. The story was probably hilarious when it came out.

He was in the land of midian. Where Moses father in law came from. These are the children of Abraham and his wife ketora. There was Yahweh worship there.
