As a Caro Kann player I have seen many of these pawn storms. I love when my opponent gives me an umbrella pawn. But you do need to be careful if they have an effective attack coming on the diagonals sometimes you weaken your own position too much. With your pawns on the white squares in a diagonal and your king also on a white square it's pretty difficult to get in quickly he probably would have needed to bring up one of his other pawns. Thanks for the interesting breakdown. Pawn play can be some of the trickiest to figure out

Awesome video, thanks for all the super useful tips! Out of curiosity at 4:20 I'm wondering if Bxh4 is a good idea or not. It's not like it brings anything particularly great to the table, other than a free pawn, and maybe there are risks of opening the g file in front of the king IDK... Although we can ignore and king-block the g4 pawn if it takes the g5 pawn and use our g6 pawn to protect the bishop maybe? Making it a little outpost? I was just wondering.

Could you possibly do something on considering bishop play throughout the game with the emphasis on good vs bad bishop. Also is it a good idea for lower rates players to deliberately ignore their usual preference for knights and learn how to value bishops more obviously considering the position. Just an idea as I can't recall you doing a bishop video CHEERS

Great lesson! Thank you! Question: I watch IM John Bartholomew and on this subject he has recommended that you don’t push your own pawns when dealing with a pawn storm. From what I understand, he says it’s better to make your opponents work for the forced pawn breaks. Maybe it’s possible you get more activation and get an attack going with your minor/major pieces while they are storming the pawns? Is this an instance where the position calls for h5 blockade?
@jakemcintyre6558
@jakemcintyre6558 2 года назад
In Fianchetto positions as black, pawn to h5 is often necessary when dealing with a pawn storm. Their attack is usually a little quicker because of your g6 pawn.

@Dustin It could also be a mutual pawn race. Sometimes it is just one checkmate move differ from both sides. (Like mate on g7 for withe, or b2 for black). When I was a kid, we used to joke about it: "Hey, white begins... so if you checkmate me and I can do the same the move after as black, it is a draw!" O;-

I always go for Sämisch against KID, but I play f3 on move 3. If you go d4 Nf6, c4 g6, then f3 kinda avoids the Grünfeld. My reason to do it this way is that I don't understand the Grünfeld at all, so I learned just this Anti-Grünfeld system and I play that way. So far the Sämisch has given me lots of victories as white.

this has to be the slow and nastiest tactic in chess ever, I just played a game with a guy from France, he locked down my whole position in 3 lines, my Queen was locked, my Rooks were threatened my bishops had to sit on corners overall it was a damage to me, fortunately that guy didn't knew the endgame, so it turned out to be a draw.

you probably already know the answer, but just in case - en passant isn't possible here, it's only possible if the pawn moves 2 square (so black pawn should go from g7 to G5, not from g6 to g5 as shown in the video)

Great video, I learned a lot. By the way, please continue to not include the eval bar in these instructional videos as that only serves to cloud one's thinking. Much better to practice evaluating positions based on the elements of Time, Space, Material, Pawn Structure and King Safety. Players don't have access to an eval bar during games, unless they are cheating, so it is a good idea for aspiring players and even spectators not to become addicted to it.

Issue is after bishop takes h4, white has queen h6 threatening mate on g7, you basically have to bring the Bishop back to f6 to block his bishop, then their attack continues, gxh is viable, even the rook sac followed by lining the light squared bishop up on d3 looks viable
