James Steele talks to Simon Shawcross, founder of HITuni, about the key points that make up a template for personal trainers to follow when introducing clients to resistance training.
In a nutshell, the template looks like this:
1. Build routines on a foundation of multi-joint exercises.
2. Adapt the range of motion of the exercises to suit the individual.
3. Use a rep duration that best represents good form in each exercise.
4. Exercise to a High Intensity of Effort.
5. Perform single sets of each exercise.
6. Use a moderate load for initial sessions.
7. Perform workouts 2x per week when possible.
James Steele is Principal Investigator at UK Active Research Institute; Associate Professor Sport and Exercise Science at Southampton Solent University.

That's a really interesting discussion. A cogent argument well presented and explained. I do like to train heavy, hard and intensely. It's cool. It's good fun.

I mostly agree about heavy loads vs. light loads but I have to say, at the gym, the powerlifters don't really gain as much size unless to do hypertrophy sets, usually lat pulldowns, triceps extension, seated rows, or whatever. And RDL's and leg press for lower hypertrophy.

When doing HIT the set needs to last at least 30 seconds. In general, some powerlifters' approach (sets, reps, TUT) to the main lifts may not be an optimal stimulus for hypertrophy- hence the need for more that you mention.

So I do judo; should I add extras like neck and grip, and how should I add these in?
