Hi Trish here from New Zealand. Love this channel. And yep, I learned to sew on a Singer treadle machine, which I believe were made in the USA. Caleb's machines sound much the same. Really took me back.

It's ok, I still do most of my sewing on a treadle. You can find them everywhere, and they are easy to get running again, find needles for, and learn to sew on.!

Mr.Caleb you are amazing and so dedicated to a craft that all but died. However, history repeats and many old tries and true crafts are returning due to like minded modern preservationists rediscovering lost arts. I salute you! Keep on keeping on as I look forward to when the house front is completed and you go back to the interior of the house. 👏🌹

I think the attachment on the buffing machine is a pully so that you can use it with an electric motor. the different diameters enable it to run at different speeds depending on which pully the belt is running in.

You were talking about squirrels and I remembered that I heard that squirrels tend to live in the same area where they were born. So, that would mean the squirrels you have right now, are the direct descendants of the ones that lived there when Mr. Brown did.

It’s really coming along and I can’t wait to see the mansard roof. ❤ She’s going to be a showstopper and the red and green will complement the brick. (My cousin has a brick Queen Anne trimmed in emerald, red and peach) If I were your neighbor, your hard work on the exterior would encourage me to remove the “modern” facade from my home and restore it back to the original. 😊

Probably been noted already, but I am willing to lay money on the treadle powered tool at 16:00 being a leatherworking tool-- you have a buffing wheel for polishing, and the rounded wood discs are for edge burnishing. Probably out of a tack and harness/saddlemaker's shop if I had to guess. It would be a welcome addition in the workshop of anyone doing leatherworking even today.

So true that the sun is not your friend. Our south-facing windows are all shot. It's amazing how much the gloppy layers of white paint obscured the details on those trim boards. I'm a fan of red and green. I'm sure this color combo will look grand and classy with the brick and neutral stone. Arg. Squirrels and birds. And termites. I'm so glad for you that you've found great partners for the final restoration of the mansard. Treadle sewing machines were also a thing at the time. Other than finding replacement blades/brush wheels and belts, those cute machines ought to go on forever. It's great to see you so happy, and so close to closing up those scary gaps in your roof. The deep-felt stress of knowing something is damaging your home, your great investment, and you are prevented from dealing with it while the weather gets worse, is so hard. I hope that weight will be lifted soon.

I stumbled on this site and love the care you're putting into it. As an aside, and it's probably too late at this stage but a far better joint for repairing the exterior woodwork is to insert bowties or butterflies. There is plenty of help on YT that will guide you. They're fiddly to insert but the end result is perfect. Good luck with the renovation - it's going to be a stunner.

As a Brit I can see just how much wonderful and historic architecture exists in the USA, it’s exquisite. Unfortunately there don’t seem to be many measures in place to preserve it. At home in the UK architecture is celebrated and conserved, even some of the more modern and questionable buildings that divide opinion. Nevertheless such protections are necessary to safeguard our history and as the USA is a relatively young country I hope they implement measures to protect the beautiful buildings they already have.

On the treadle machines, the wheel on the side is to get it started, a) so it goes in the right direction and b) to reduce the initial force that would otherwise be placed on the belts and other moving parts. My treadle sewing machine has the same thing and if I try and sew without giving it an initial gentle spin as I begin to treadle, I often break needles or thread. The initial force required to get it to run must be quite big so alleviating it will keep the machines running smoother for longer.
