Well, hot and its entire damn! The dormer is getting buttoned up! That should help keep the birds, squirrels, foxes, armadillos and other assorted wildlife out, as well as rain. You are the only person I know that can make watching paint dry interesting. Looking forward to continued progress.

Kaleb, I so much enjoy watching your gradual progress in bringing your beloved Old Lady back to life. Although I realise it is a lot of hard work, nevertheless I find it calming and soothing for me as an elderly guy to watch. Your natural charm is part of that. As a 90 year old, one of my wishes is to live long enough to see the project through to completion!

I am so glad to see the dormer getting fixed. It always seemed to be the saddest aspect of the house. It was a bit like a droopy eye.

So exciting to see this framework coming together, it's been a long time coming, but it's going to be worth the wait to see the old girl coming back into her own at last.

Congrats on starting the roof fix. I replaced the roof on my own house that was built in 1810 (slate roof). Best advice I can pass on to you is to ensure you put a waterproof breathable membrane on before you re-slate your roof. It will protect your building in case any of the slates cracks or falls off in a storm in the future - the roof will still stay water proof. Tyvek Zone 5 is what I used and highly recommend it. Also I can confirm that Copper is the best material to use for flashings. On my house all the Lead Flashing had cracked and perished. Only the Copper was still intact after 150+ years of service. All my V-shaped flat valleys leaked as the Lead was cracked. As per Engineer, we replaced the flat valleys with Copper with is jointed every 4 feet to allow for expansion and contraction. When you install the new slates only use Copper nails - allows the roof to be repaired in future incase a slate is damaged in high winds - can easily rip out the nail with a slate ripper tool and then install a new slate. Never use Galvanized or Steel Nails....if you ever had to rip one of them out then you will end up breaking all the slates around the one you are trying to repair. I also re rendered the chimneys before the new roof was re-laid. The Chimney Rendering is the messiest job you will have on site and if you make the mistake to reinstall the slates first before the chimneys are re-rendered, then you can expect the Renderer to not only make a mess with Lime Render all over the new slates, but also they invariably break many of the slates around the Chimney where they are standing/working. So advice is to do any re rendering of Chimneys Before you re-slate. I noticed in a pervious episode way back that you were talking about NHL Lime and the difficulty in sourcing in your area and wondering what traditional Renovation specialists use ad where they get their materials from. Well the answer is that they don't use NHL Lime. NHL 2.0 Lime is ok if you are repointing or if you are re-rendering the outside wall at ground level. NHL is not made for interior plastering work. NHL is also difficult to keep from cracking. The answer is the Renovation Conservation Specialists use a Traditional Lime Mix which is easily made from a CL90 Lime. You can use CL 90 to make a Traditional Hotlime Mortar Mix for immediate use, or you can Slake the CL 90 to create a Lime Putty (which then needs a minimum of 6 months to mature before use - the longer you leave it the better it gets, but you must keep it under water). Please search Nigel Copsey to learn exactly how to make a Traditional Lime Mix. He works for English Heritage on some of the most significant buildings in England and has extensive experience with Traditonal Lime Mixes. CL 90 will make Lime Mortar, Lime Plaster, Lime Putty, and Lime wash. You will never use NHL Limes again after making and using a Traditional Lime Mix. Especially for plastering, the quality and consistency of a Traditonal Lime Mix Plaster is far superior to any NHL. For reference the best NHL 2.0 only has a freelime content of max 40%. That means the remaining 60% is not lime and is filler. NHL 3.5 and NHL5 are less in Lime Content. CL 90 on the otherhand is 90% Lime. CL 90 is also way way cheaper than any NHL. You will never use NHL after using a Traditional Lime Mix. Please search Nigel Copsey to learn more about it. It will really make a significant difference to how you restore this house. This is the Original Lime Mix that your house was built with.

Now I know why my Dad kept all that old growth timber in the basement of our Victorian house in London! I still have my 1960s British Classic Triumph car with a boot (trunk) rack with the cheap wood slats replaced with Maghogany slats and brass screws, thanks Dad!

I bet you're right about those brackets. It would be a very secure way to hang flags and also easy to change the banner. It's amazing to discover all the innovation used in past times - a lot more than now I think.

The horse shoe shaped things attached to the windowsill are dowl rod holders or old curtain rod holders that were utilized for a different purpose. I know this because my mom had some that she used to hang sheer curtains.

You could pretty easily throw some flashing tape over that middle gap. If all of it’s going anyway, who cares if it doesn’t look so good? It’ll cost a few dollars and guarantee no water comes through.

This is looking good! You were indeed correct that leaving the rotten trim pieces up until you and your Pro could measure and note everything was exactly right. Congrats! Many of my friends love the rain (a bit rare here in So. Cal.), and go on and on about how great it is. But then their roofs and windows don't leak. Here with you on both the frustrations and exciting discoveries. House mysteries are (usually) so much fun!

I can't believe how invested I am in these dormer windows and mansard roof, but here we are. 😆 These temporary repairs may not seem exciting to some people, but every step toward getting that area out of the rain makes my heart happy.

22:18 I believe that old flashing is Terne plate which is why it's rusty. Since it was originally painted the Victorians would have seen no reason to use copper which cost more.

Yes, every tiny piece that you find is a piece of history that you can use to rebuild to its original design as possible. Nice job on protecting the dormer. Amazing how exposed it was. There is so much detail that has been lost, but so great in the work that you are doing to bring this history and details back., little by little. The woodwork that you are doing is beautiful. Hi from Vancouver BC Canada. I love your home restoration project, and the history. You should be very proud of what you've already accomplished. Over the last week and a half I watched every video on this project to catch up. You and Kim seem so nice, and I really like your attention to detail. Its been fantastic to see paint colors and details come back to the house. I can't wait to see the mansard roof completed. The house will look amazing. Especially once the iron work is back on the very top. It's unfortunate your neighbors home has vinyl siding on the mansard roof. We can't see much of that house in your 1896 picture. However we can definitely tell the stone work at the front was different and it had much nicer windows, corbels and other trim/details that are sadly gone. So its very cool that you are able to save/restore the Brown house. Keep up the fantastic work Kaleb.

I still don't know how you sleep at night knowing there's cold air, rain etc coming in the other dormer making the house/upstairs an ice box but I digress. I loved the old roofing shingles! The ones on my grandparents old Victorian looked liked fish scales !

Regarding the two bar braces, your flag hypotheses is good; but I think it’s actually for temporarily attaching a bar that has a pulley and rope. This would make it possible to bring items up to the attic without carrying them through a clean house up all the stairs.

I just had 4 carpenters out to fix the outside of my 2nd empire. They knocked it out in a few days and now it can be painted. I'm looking forward to it.

Things are looking so great with your house! I look forward to each video to see the old girl get better and better! You said the plywood on the front of the dormer is coming off in a couple of weeks so the open space between the boards is not a great concern. I thought you could use some of that foam, like Great Stuff, to seal up the opening. Living in Ohio I know Midwest weather and how unpredictable it can be. I just thought there is always the possibility of a rainstorm, heck even snow as we move into December, and you would get water in there. I hope you don't mind the suggestion.
