We are degrading our planet’s life support systems at an alarming rate. Half of our forests and coral reefs. One-third of our farms, pastures and mangroves. But there is hope. As human decisions chart the course of the Anthropocene, we have the power to restore what we’ve lost. This involves approaches that improve soil fertility, grow new trees, plant native grasses, produce new coral reefs, and more. The most effective restoration solutions often come from grassroots movements and local entrepreneurs working in collaboration with the communities that are directly impacted. These hyperlocal solutions are showing the way, and can be scaled with supportive incentives, investments and systems that monitor their progress. Together we can create a “restoration economy” that delivers good jobs, sustainable food, clean water, reduced disaster risks, increased resilience and climate change mitigation. Sean DeWitt is the Director of the Global Restoration Initiative at World Resources Institute (WRI). Sean loves restoration: the art of bringing people together to make things better in our natural and built environments. He is on a mission to help restore forests, farms, pastures, hillsides, riparian areas, jobs, livelihoods, culture and hope.
