To each his own. I’m always shaking my head at those who make disparaging comments when nobody is forcing them into living in a tiny home or RV. The veteran’s community project is a beautiful example of how tiny homes are a perfect solution for some. I would love to have a home like that on my land. I’ve homeschooled and raised my children to successful adulthood and now don’t need as much.

Some folks have had difficult life circumstances and are just trying to survive so don't know folks who must live in vehicles and places they wouldn't choose if they had the resources. There's not hardly enough senior and low income housing available. You are fortunate .

Most of us will be in RV s because we can't afford 2000 or 2700 a month just for housing, bet there will be hundreds of thousands out on street

Lot rent is always high and goes up so seniors who are low income/fixed incomes it can price you out in a few years and "Parks" can always be sold to new owners (which can cause issues) or to developers who want use the land for something else and home owners can't afford to move their home to another park and they lose their home. We have Acony Tiny Home Park in Mills River NC , right next to Pisgah National Forest.which is about 5 years old and very nice but the lot rent is $500 a month right now. Tiny homes are "glorified" mobile homes with the same lot rental issues and problems if you don't own your own land.

The lot rent can go up every year and if you live on SS and don't have much money saved up somewhere you are screwed.

Definitely! I'm going to have to try to buy my own land to put a tiny home on. Don't know how easy that's going to be. I've heard about that tiny home community and was wondering how much the lot rent was. I consider $500 a month as high. Yes, I agree that it will just keep going up. I'm going to have to live as a Nomad for awhile just so I can save money for some land and a tiny home.

Very true! For Tinies to be a true alternative, the people of the Tiny movement need to organize resident owned parks/property. Otherwise like you said, we are at the mercy of Landlords, just for a bit less per month! I speak as a Tiny owner myself and seeing the raw aspects of the "alternative" as the property manager. - Nick

I live in a tiny home park and the lot rent does increase but no more than 3% each year and there is a legal contract. You always pay for the land you are on no matter where you live- Even if you buy land , you have to pay taxes on it. I paid way more in property tax on my large home and I never knew how much it was going up each year. With housing costs rising , it got so that I couldn't afford to pay my mortgage and the property taxes and live comfortably. There are pros and cons to anywhere you live.

You make some good points based on what has been happening in recent years with large corporations buying up mobile home parks in droves. However, my hope is these videos will also perhaps inspire some folks to go in together on land and split the cost to own the land under their tiny homes. I think that is going to be the solution for the future, especially for seniors.

@JoeHarmon Reason most don't have lofts is Tiny homes were started 20 yrs ago by young singles who saw their parent work to grave to pay for McMansions... Did u know I didn't for long tome b4 wwii I think a mortgage was 20 yrs? But to get ppl to spend more and they cld make more-extended it to 30yrs. This causes avg ppl to pay for home 2.5 times! Plus there is usually 1 large kitchen & bathroom update/remodel. So they built their own tiniest w L overs cheap-used free etc- no other ppl building it then. This way they cld save save save & possibly live with some extra cash or take out less student debt. Then when they had most of their children- to pay cash for an affordable hone. This wld same average person- immediately- $250+remodeling + taxes & ins...u see where I'm going. Also it allowed them to work less & it also was a COMPLETE lifestyle of minimalism & learning to live w less- leave less of a carbon footprint & have extra for whatever of poss instead of the home/styling upgrading/repsiring/maintaining... being the user of most income. By putting bdroms ustairs- allowed more space in downstairs for living 2/3 of time. A s the wealthy & babyboomer downsizers saw & said- how cute- or those w tiny or No soc. sec. Bc they were good little housewives- I admire & think they are the way ppl can raise kids-IF POSSIBLE & OBV GOOD PARENT. But no one thought from 60' we'd still actually be here--let alone need their Soc Security! So many of the mostly women- needed affordable place if cld do it. They wealthy started to have them built by others... Many ppl try to like fit 20 ppl in a phone booth mentaility & then are shocked it didn't work-?or older ppl who don't get that it goes along w the Minimalistic mindset-not just living w/out space- always talk abt it like this was the answer for re-tirees--It was NEVER their answer-however-of Course by modification or just going SMALL instead of tiny or micro-ut can easily work for anyone! Ppl it is Perfectly alright to live in a SMALL home! Seems like ppl think it HAS to be a Tiny or Micro sized place or they've missed the boat-'No! A home needs to be what you can afford-where it can go- what if possible you like- notice the last one is not 1st! So put 2 bedrooms downstairs- or buy a SMALL home already built! They are there! Tell those ppl of & when they want to move to give you a call!! Wouldn't believe how just putting it in their head in good economy works! Anyway home this helps see why most bedrooms don't work for seniors-but of course their are tons of them & Dual purpose rooms are super advantage. Adding an *** INPENSIVE 4 SEASON PORCH- WELL INSULATED W WINDOWS ON SALE OR MISSIZED & BUILT AROUND CAN help in places where you home is short some of min square footage... Check it out if possible... If you just call some places e & ask about adding a conservatory of course It's not gonna be cheaper! It has to be done very frugally- & see if it can be zoned so heat or sir domestic have to be used if bills or extreme weather is too costly. But check it out!

Went to their website and checked things out, they sure have it all there. We need more of these communities of tiny homes. I was listening to NPR about mortgage rates, housing shortage and outrageous rental fees, so we definitely need to see more tiny home villages. It's estimated that we won't get out of this high cost of homes for another 10 years. Thanks Carol for sharing this place.

Hey Adele! Thanks for visiting out site. Yes more parks and more importantly, resident owned parks! We don't have that here but as property manager I see the only way for a true alternative is to put ownership back in the hands of Tiny owners, not just their own home. - Nick

@@loren3160 hi there our rent is 402.00 but we have been here for 8 years I think the latest rent amount is 477.00 but not positive but they tell that to new people as they move here, the mobile homes here are owned by each person here, when they go up for sale they usually sell quite fast as small town nice safe town up high in mountain, the costs of the homes have increased in tehachapi each year since I’ve been here, we are in kern county so taxes are not as high as neighboring counties, I do believe. Also another bit of info you might like to know is that we are on outskirts edge of our tiny town and directly behind us they are preparing to build something very nice as well it will be an rv park for permanent and temporary folks it will have showers laundry and club house as well as a storage facility and I think this will be a good thing for tehachapi and there are other rv parks as well, not very many but a few but yes I think cost of living is good in kern county and tehachapi is nice and sweet with four seasons but we do get snow in winter ❤️

That’s not bad rent in any semi-popular part of CA. I’m in 305 sq ft, one BR, in the East Bay Area (SF), absolutely nothing fancy like AC or a dishwasher for a little more than that. Its rent controlled, but as soon the Covid restrictions lift I expect at least +$200. Comparable units are well over $2,000.

We had the absolute blessing of being able to take a weekend getaway to the north Georgia mountains. We opted for a 500 square foot Airbnb and it was more than enough room. I immediately took out my sketch pad, and started sketching out where I would put things, how I could separate the absolutely beautiful oversized dining area into another bedroom and an office area, where I could put a second bathroom if I needed it, etc. Hubs had to remind me that, 'Hey, this isn't our house.' and my response was always...... But it could be 🤣 I have literally four loads to go to the Goodwill right now. Our oldest two are military, so nomads in a sense. And our last little birdie just flew the coop. We are heating and cooling 2700 square feet of space and we literally utilize the kitchen, the den, our bedroom, and our office. We are both within 9 years of full retirement, but I cannot see continually doing this with the taxes hiking up every year and builders bulldozing the acreage surrounding us to slap up townhomes. As if 250 townhomes within a 1.5 mile radius weren't enough. We have been fighting this battle for well over 4 years and the little guy doesn't count anymore. They are buying out our lots and suggesting that we choose a town home which starts at $500,000... I've lived here for 32 years, my house is only valued in the high threes, yet they buy the broken down houses surrounding us for $700,000 to start but won't go above three for mine. But they want the land. I figure I'm going to try to get out while I'm at the top of the game. When they come for mine, once they start giving the neighbors their High 700,000 checks, I'll take mine too. I just don't want to be caught out there with no options.

Tiny homes are just expensive glorified mobile homes with LESS sq ft and bigger stigma against them than a mobile. The only way to own Either one is to Own the land beneath it.. Having been in both the tiny home & mobile home industry, I would like to warn folks that neither are like RVs in the way that RVs were made to be in motion. Every time you up & move a tiny home or mobile home, you’ll have significant repairs to make. And the longer they have sat, the more repairs will need to be made. And I’d suggest renting a space the size you’re thinking of building or purchasing before hand. Most Americans have no concept of “tiny”. Our tiny homes were literally smaller than a quad cab truck. Also, most counties have fire & health codes that require minimum square footage of living space, kitchen space, sleeping space, & bathroom space.

Most people lived in much much much smaller homes up until the 80s... when we started to see the mini mansions.. being built around the country., I grew up in what most would consider a large home.. average 3000 SF large family but my point is.. most families prior to that lived in homes half the size so really we are just returning to where we were.. no going forward actually.. unless you go off grid.. and you can't go off grid in this tiny home village.. to many trees.

$1500 per month for that long term rental example is still far too expensive for a huge percentage of the population. Considering the location and thus the need for a vehicle, the unit should be priced within range of the average social security recipient after accounting for other average costs.

Rents in San Diego County are very high as in many places now. The rent at some parks a few blocks from the beach is $2,000 a month just for the lot space. While $800 a month for a lot is not cheap it is considered reasonable for the area. As far as how people afford rents, many cannot that is why they are becoming nomads, especially seniors on low fixed incomes.

There are several now. There is one in Sacremento California I heard about but don't know the name. There is Tiny Tranquility in Waldport, Oregon which I really want to visit as it is right on the coast. Also, Incredible Tiny Homes, a builder, has a tiny home community in Tennesse. I also heard of a community in Texas. They're out there.

I lived in CA 36yrs / sold out due to health issues. Bought a few acres (cash) in SW NM and put a 850 sq ft living unit on it and still under $70k After well & septic in place. All utilities total was under $100 month.. Taxes under $150 yr... I feel my failing was actually a blessing in disguise. For over 20 yrs I've lived on Tight budget but in a comfy quiet country place where I have no bills. The only thing I miss about CA is a huge variety of plants I could grow in a coastal climate... now @ 6,500' elevation thats limited but @ 70+ thats 👌 too. Happy minimalist... So those that think rent / land cost is too high / consider expanding your search..

I don't mean to be negative but this doesn't seem like much of a solution for affordable housing. I pay $1600 a month for a 950 sq ft 1 bedroom in Florida that's walking distance to the beach... $1500 a month for 244 sq ft? Sounds like NYC
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 2 года назад
Well, the prices in much of California are similar to NYC. This represents something that is considered reasonable for the area. Of course it would not be considered reasonable where the average rent is $700 as opposed to over 2k. I have, howevrr, also been seeing a number of programs highlighting a number families in Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and orhere areas in Florida where rents have increased as much as 100 percent. Sonhigh rents are causing havoc for people most places.

I suggest low income and those living on social Security folks start putting in applications for the newer HUD housing being built in some of the smaller cities around the country where you pay %30 of your income because it can take 1-2 years for an opening and then jump on the offer when it comes up. The main thing I don't care for in my 2 year old complex is that it is an all age community (children running around) and not a senior community. Otherwise I'm close to 3 area hospitals and medical, shopping, senior services, YMCA, several very nice parks and a National Forest also plenty of camping around. You can get your doctor to fill out a form for you to have an "emotional support, companion pet (dog or cat)". I don't know where I could live cheaper and have what I need so close. I'm thinking about applying for all senior low income community apartment and have heard about plans for more new construction of of senior housing to be completed in a couple of years. There is so much demand you have get multiple applications in and you name on waiting lists and also look at places because some places aren't nice to live. Mobile Home parks really charge a lot of rent and you have to pay for all the maintenance on the home you own.

Here in Connecticut, low income housing is for elderly and handicapped. Did you know that alcoholism is considered a handicap, so is drug addiction, as well as people returning to society from being in jail or being mentally ill. Nowhere else but the good old USA would think up putting people with these "handicaps" into a community to terrorize the elderly who are already fragile and afraid to leave their homes. They went into senior living for the care and companionship of others like themselves and ended up more isolated than they were before. I recently met a man who repeatedly had his groceries stolen from outside his hallway door, and who has an aide for 4 hours a day who comes late, goes home to walk the dog, comes back and sits for an hour, and then clocks out. My Mom had it no better with aide who slept, talked on the phone all night, wouldn't feed change or bathe her, and even came to take care of her when they had the flu. Mom was medically compromised, on oxygen, and they would smoke around her. Don't get old in Connecticut. Also, these housing developments don't pay attention to who is living in the apartments. People tend to have "extras" staying in the apartment.

@@aprilbaxter2578 I was born in Waterbury & am currently here visiting. Just for hahas I was looking into housing for my mom & myself. There are almost no places without stairs inside and/or outside, and I find myself thinking, "This is a scary place to get old!" As much as I hate the cold weather (which is why I moved away 40 years ago), I know there are clothes for that; I have no mobility issues but the thought of being in danger of slipping on ice is terrifying. I can't imagine how difficult it might be for my mom, who uses a walker, to navigate in the snow and ice. I think about my grandparents, who lived here long before ADA accessibility and wonder how they managed. Then I remember that their generation didn't live much past their 60s 🤔

@@Rox1SMF @April Baxter I live in Norwich, 10 minutes from casino's. I've been living in (federally) subsidized housing for 15 years. I have a 3 bdrm townhouse, my rent is 395.00 A MONTH, they go by your income, I'm on disability, SSI rn. Utilities are separate but affordable. My kids are grown now and out of the house. I'm interested in downsizing to smaller unit, because its just me. Yes there are kids running around outside, but maintenance keeps grounds clean, apartment is up to code, any problem, they come when called. Management are sticklers about keeping riff- raff out, bad ppl don't last long. Quick snow removal. I have been fortunate!! I'm just saying down the road in New London, those sub apts are atrocious, you gotta buy your own stove and fridge, mow your own lawn, the grounds are trashy, it just varies from town to town in Connecticut, but NOT ALL CT is bad. And April, when I got this apartment 15 years ago, I was not disabled, or elderly, and they DON'T let you in Norwich Housing if you have a criminal record.

@@aprilbaxter2578 Where I live I had to provide my birth certificate, social security card, driver's license, show all income, everywhere I lived for 10 year, get on a waiting list, car and tag, assets, bank accounts, all income, social security etc and then they do a background check and provide doctor signed paper to 1 st floor apt. I know some people here have mental illness and I stay away from them and some folks came from homeless shelters but everyone has the same requirements to get in here and the apts are inspected 4 times a year and management tries to stay on top of things. No smoking in apts only 25 ft from building and you could be evicted if you are caught smoking even on the porch. Some people pay full price here and some pay 30% of income. This property is owned by the city and run by a property Management Co. and HUD provides qualifying low income subsidies. This place is better than many I've heard about.

You really have to investigate land you want to live in a tiny home, RV, shed etc... before you buy. Be careful. There are a lot of good videos on You Tube about land purchase to live on. Even some very rural land requires a well/water and sewer/ septic hook up and has building restrictions as to what type of structure you can live in and it's size. Research

If you own your own tiny house and put it on a lot there the cost is $800 plus your electric. There are certainly cheaper states to live in like Arizona in the desert. I featured a location that the lot is under $200 a month with a year lease. But, you have to be able to tolerate 115 or higher temps in the summer on a regular. Everything is a trade off based on what is important to you. I like being able to get to the beach in 10 minutes and a beautiful climate most of the year and top notch medical facilities nearby. I am willing for now to sacrifice other things to have that.
