Wow the basket looks lovely! We were taught how to make a basket by Kit from Queen Elizabeth Dolls House at Coventry Miniatura last month. We used embroidery floss then applied a watered down pva solution afterwards which was a cheap alternative to the linen thread. I’ve admired your basket collection for years, you have some beautiful artisan pieces! Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge. Xxxx love from Nottingham, England ❤

That sounds like a great alternative. Thank you for the tip! The watered-down PVA glue is a wonderful stiffener and helps to keep everything together. I should write all of the tips down before I start on another basket! Thank you Wendy! 😃

That looks really lovely and stylish. I haven't had much luck with basket making so now I just tend to ask Jen Horner to make them for me when I need one, but I would love to learn the skill in future. I was gifted a very large industrial spool of a dark waxed linen thread a while ago so I really must learn! (And now I appreciate the value of the gift!!!)

That's a great gift! I love having materials available to me and then one day come up with a use for them. Yes, Jen's work is absolutely lovely! Maybe one day she'll start teaching basket making, wouldn't that be good! 😃

I always look forvard to and enjoy your videos. Though I have a bit of basket weaving experience, I can learn something from your struggles in miniature. I would never have thought of glueing on a rim like you did, because life sized baskets are supposed to be sturdy, but it is actually a real possibility in miniature, which I will remeber :) Keep up the good work ❤

Yes, it is such a shame that waxed linen thread is so expensive, it is nice for many things. Here in the US you can get hemp cord in various sizes for less, or even use DMC embroidery thread…with a piece of beeswax, you wax any thread to make the weaving easier.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
I was wondering about that! I'll have to give that a try. Unwaxed linen thread is not too expensive so I'll get some of that and experiment. Thanks for the idea Carmen! 😃

Hi Josje, I ordered the same waxed linen thread on-line during lock-down and accepted that it was very expensive but my biggest shock was getting in the post and realising that it was just the size of a standard spool of thread.😂 (lesson…always read the fine print) I put it in a safe place waiting for a worthy project and thanks to your video I now have one. The cheap garden twine you used for the log basket makes it look very realistic because it is a bit rougher.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
Hahaha! Yes it is very tricky to order online sometimes. Much better to see it in person. But it is very convenient and during lockdown it was our only option. I did like the garden twine, it's just a completely different look and not suitable for a tiny basket like this of course. But it's fun to play with different materials. I will try some other types of threads in the future. Thanks Coby! 😃

Josje you basket turned out adorable! Maybe next basket can have a braided top to cover up the cut off wire on the edge. To make longer handles you can insert a longer wire each side once you start weaving on the sides then take the wire bending to the opposite sides, you do not have to include it when making the bottom. It will holds well. Love the cat also.😊
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
Thank you Jane! I didn't want a braided top on this one but I have another basket in mind where it will look really nice. Thank you for the tip on the handles! I just wondered if you can tell there's an extra wire in there, as one of the spines (? I don't know what they're called) will be twice as thick as the rest. It could be used as a design feature. Lots to learn. 😃
@Shari_A._
@Shari_A._ 3 месяца назад
Your basket is absolutely beautiful. I love the way you did the handles.. What I have done, instead of using the waxed thread which is more expensive, I just buy the thread I need in the right size, then if I want it a different color I run it through some acrylic paint of that color and let it dry. It then is the right texture for weaving. It's messy, but it works. If the thread is already the color you want, then just run it through some tacky glue and let it dry.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 3 месяца назад
That's a great idea, thank you! I have used acrylic paint for dying/painting fibres and fabric before and it always worked well. It does get a little bit stiff, but as you said it then has the right texture for weaving. So yes, great idea! I'll have to try it! Thanks Shari! 😃

Your basket turned out so cute. I remember, years ago, the linen thread was called Irish waxed linen carpet thread. I believe it did come from Ireland. Looking online there is still carpet thread for sale in different ply, at various prices. The wire also comes in white here. In the making, of a my few mini baskets, I found using a blunt nosed darning needle came in handy. I think I'll have to pull out my wicker making stuff again and make another basket as well. LOL Thanks for the video, I always look forward for them. 🧺🧺
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
Well, because of you I just spent hours on Temu. My goodness, that's a rabbit hole! 😅 I googled 'Irish waxed linen carpet thread' and that's where I ended up. I didn't find it and didn't buy anything, but wow, talk about temptation! 😂 Blunt-nosed darning needles would be good, but I only have really long ones with a big enough hole for the thread to fit through. Carmen mentioned using beeswax on regular cotton or flax, so I will try that and some other options. Yes! Make some baskets! 😃

@@MakeMiniatures So many different threads can be used. A friend of mine made gorgeous baskets using crocheting threads, not waxed but it kept it's shape. Some hobby boat rigging cord is also nice. I bought some in Holland thinking I would use it for weaving chair seats. Not waxed though. (no I haven't done that yet either😧)
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 3 месяца назад
I agree! Basically, if it's a thread you can weave with it. I have some of that hobby boat rigging cord too, but not a lot. I think buttonhole thread or top stitch thread would work great as well.

Josje you really do not notice one extra wire other than one top to bottom row will be slightly larger in width. Squeezing it with the tweezers helps if needed. I have made a complete set of wicker chair/stool/planter with the materials you have used. They came out wonderful - but TENSION when weaving is everything for proper spacing. To start a circle, use 2 wires crossed over, weave 2 rows then insert half extra wires, weave another 2 rows, then insert the rest of the wires. Then continue weaving. Just like basket weaving in full scale.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 3 месяца назад
Thank you for the mini-lesson! I should really look into full-scale basket weaving to understand more about it. I do like the wicker furniture, so maybe one day I'll venture into that as well. There is/was a French maker who made the most beautiful wicker garden chairs, loungers etc. I haven't seen her for a while now. I should have bought some of her work back then. Now I'll just have to make it myself 😉

I think I've seen these florist wires in white as well as green. That would at least be less noticeable with the light colors you are using. I think that in regular basket making, they would weave the pieces together to form that initial square rather than gluing like you did here. It's a cute basket though and I like the combination of wire and waxed thread for miniature baskets.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 3 месяца назад
I've now found the florist wire in white and brown (and green of course). Haha yes, I think you're right about the real basket makers not using glue. There will probably be a correct way to hold them when starting that initial square, I just couldn't get it right without the glue.😉 Thank you Stephanie! 😃
