A Tour Of My Still Unfinished Kitchen And My Plans To Complete It

There were a couple of things that I left out of this, mainly because I haven't made up my mind whether I'll include them. One is what's known as an appliance garage that would go in the corner of the L of the countertop. It would have a roll up door and would contain small appliances like a food processor.
Here are some ways that you can help support the work I do in making these videos:

It does not take long for an appliance garage to become an irritant because only very small things can go in there and often the stuff in front has to be taken out to get the stuff in the back. IMO a better bet would be to make the cabinets between the fridge and stove only 12 inches wide, move the fridge to the left then have a wall of 12 deep pantries where the current door to the back is located. The space to the right of the fridge would be dead space but you would have a huge amount of storage space in a small kitchen.
@IBuildItHome

I had an appliance garage in a previous kitchen (one I made myself) and really liked it. As for the change you are suggesting, that would involve redoing the countertop between the fridge and stove, and that's not going to happen.
@peggyt1243
@peggyt1243 6 лет назад
OK. How about on the wall opposite the appliances where the sawhorses are located. IMO, a blank wall screams for pantries.

you should put the slide cabinet backing's to same side so you don't need to step round. both access from left or right side. back to back backing is a bit silly

Oh, man, John - I've watched and rewatched all the videos on your Home channel so many times. I really just wish you wouldn't have decided to stop producing new content for it, I really loved that channel... Glad to hear that everything worked out for you getting your access back after the hack though! You rock - thanks for so many years of great videos, John.

Since your counter tops are standard height, you might consider making the island higher(taller) to accommodate your height.

Even though I'm sure you're doing everything wrong, in the opinion of the "expert" commenters, I like it! I really like the counter top and the black grout. White grout always, always gets dirty, that grout won't!

I would definitely center the light above your pull-out shelving! Otherwise, one shelf would be well-lit, while the other is "in shade!" Centering the light would prevent that, esp. since they're both going to be facing the center...

I don't understand why you want to access the pantry from two different directions? I'm new so I don't know the floor plan. It would be easy to move this one to the other side and make the new one so both are accessed from the sink side. Sending lots of love 💜 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵

What agreat idea with the pulling out cupboard , i am just gonna substitute the wall with plexiglass/polycarbonate 50-100mm high or perhaps with two tube on each side. So things can be taken out from both sides. I just need to figure out on how to make it stable not having a backplate

That is going to look good. Clearly done by someone who has the experience to know what they like. That corner with the inset ceiling has a real diner vibe to it. Personally, I would flip the right side of the sliding cabinet, so both parts open on the kitchen side. That way it's easier to search both cabinets or restock them and stuff can't fall over as easily, possibly getting wedged.
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 6 лет назад
You are the third person to second guess my work on that cabinet and point out how you would have done better! :) To mount it the other way would require a panel solidly mounted in the middle of that cabinet strong enough to take the weight of the fully stocked slide out, which I though about doing, but rejected it as a waste of space and material.
@MrPanohead

Good for you (meant that in a positive way), that is what I meant above, when I said is was done by someone with experience. The "new" stainless steel isn't. I just bought a new fridge and aside from rusting, I can put fridge magnets on it... so clearly this isn't what we're used to calling "stainless". And now I have toaster envy. And I love that you have a cleaver at the ready on a cabinet door...... The tray ceiling is really awesome. Damn, I wish I was this crafty and had the time to try to be this crafty..... I just got a quote for cabinets (in a kitchen not much larger than yours) and it was $10k. It's gonna look great when you finish it.

In my experience with stainless steel (chemical process industry), the popular grades (304 / 316) etc usually only rust when small specks of mild steel contaminate the surface. It appears to rust, but it's actually the contamination that oxidizes. What we do to fix this is to use 'pickling paste' which is typically dilute hydrofluoric acid which solves the problem. It's commonly available from welding supply places. Obviously the fridge is made from an unknown grade (probably one of the 400 series - most likely 420), so exercise caution if you try this method.

I know you aren't super fond of unsolicited advice but try WD-40 on your stainless fridge once you get the rust off. It not only helps make the stainless look nicer and hide smudges and fingerprints but will act as a protectant from rust. Plus who doesn't like the smell of WD-40 in the kitchen :P
