The answers amuse me. The Vet sighs and tells him to just keep moving, the Psyker just says there is dust in the air, the Zealot tells him to charge the enemy and purge the darkness within by blood, and another Ogryn will tell him to stop being weak in front of the small'uns. Those aren't the only answers given just the ones I have heard as the personality people choose effects how their character may respond to any situation. The reason the ogryn asks if it has to die is Darktide is against a Nurgle cult taking over the hive.

I haven't even got Rogue Trader and yet simply thanks to my recent research into 40k I couldn't agree with someone's opinion more than I do with you here. Sadly the iconiclast ending is pretty dumb. You can do a run where you are good when it makes sense (Like in inspiring your soldiers, not using your people incompetently, saving and sparing people when viable and giving them the emperor's mercy when it doesn't), but the ending was, exceptionally aggravating as apparently they never thought that someone would go iconoclast and also not be heretical or betraying the Imperium in the ending. Vague stuff left vague for spoiler reasons.

Being generally good is a default setting. Getting along with the tribe keeps you alive. Doing bad things for your personal benefit beyond what being good would get you will also help you survive. Survival requires that you be good, and do only as much bad as is generally useful and won't get you kicked out of the tribe.

Our default is selfishness, especially in survival situations which is basically all of human history before the industrial revolution. Goodness, Empathy, and Generosity are ALL learned skills not instinctual. This is why it took a very long time for societies to give women, and minorities any rights, and why it really only happened in Christian countries or at the demands of a Christian country. Slavery, sexism, extreme and violent classism, xenophobia, barbarism, and chaos are the default of human society. It is really only the Western Christian idea that we are all made in the image of God that allows the kind of Empathy and Good, that you'd call good. Without that idea, which liberalism inherited from Christianity, you just have barbarism. Look at 1800s-1900s China and Japan, for example, both lack that background and therefore took horrific and barbaric actions despite having more or less the same technology as their european counterparts. 1930s Germany and Russia abandoned Christianity in favor of atheist socialism, and both committed some of the worst most brutal atrocities in human history. Being bad is easy, going with the majority is easy, siding with the angry mob is easy, being a coward is easy, being good and honorable and truthful and self-controlled is hard.

If your hunting for a reward you're already not good, that mercenary attitude is what leads to doing wrong for personal gain. Sure it's nice to get rewarded for doing the right thing and maybe if righteous acts could be rewarded they'd be more common. What makes a righteous man is doing the right thing even when or especially when he has nothing to gain from it (or even worse) if doing something because you gain in some way from it makes a right we'd all be fucking saints wouldn't we?

@@MarikHavair exactly, but apparently the tourist in question seems to belive that not being rewarded for doing charity is fascism. The other day I called an ambulance for an injured sick man on the street, stayed with him the whole time. My "reward" was being harassed by a man who was very out of it on something. Did I regret helping the old man, no. I acted because I expected myself to do something for someone in need, I needed to act because thats who I am. A pat on the back would be nice ngl but mostly when helping others you don't get anything back. Virtue signaling is an illness, it's ego driven and only exists for the reward, it's like the tourist that wrote the review is expecting praise like on Twitter when they say the "Right Thing™" Go to a homeless shelter and take on the responsibility of caring for, housing and feeding several dozen people, it's kind but also naive to think good intentions equal good outcomes. In the 40k mindset, that ship would be 100% fucked by just the immense logistical cost let alone unrest and chaos.

It's always strange that some folks seem to feel a need to try and enforce their current world moral viewpoint on fictional works and settings there was even some wanting to get the Lord of The Rings and Dungeons and Dragons banned on the grounds that giving different races of people traits that makes them better at something then another, e.g Elves being much more graceful and agile then Dwarves was racist. What is the world coming too.Granted DnD as always used the term race incorrectly as there are different species with races making up different branches - Hill and Mountain are races of the Dwarven species.

Then we started classifying humans as races because it made it easier for headlines. Smaller headlines meant larger print. This is why this linguistic problem even exists.

Sometimes, the bad outweighs the good. It could work in real life. It could not work in 40K. Daemons are real, hyperspace is infectious and evil. Tolerate even a little Chaos and you create an evil far worse than not saving a few million people.

the problem with good and evil in games, is that they paint it in a black and white color. Bad is killing and good is helping others, when in reality good is do what is necessary for the best of everyone and not everyone will be grateful, and evil is do something that in the short run will help the people but in the long one will only help you. 40k just do it in a cosmic sense.

A big part of the Modern Worldview is remaining blind to the idea that the nicest option may have a negative outcome. Most of their ideas become unsupportable the moment you start considering the costs instead of feelings and moral grandstanding.

Because those who preach about how good they are, are not. If you are helping people for any reason other than to help, be it reward, recognition, to brag later, you are doing business. It is a transaction. Not kindness. Is a reward lovely? Sure, and you can receive one graciously if offered, but to expect one is simply a business transaction Time > Reward. We see this shit with the advent of video being so easy, where people "Rescue" animals, and film it, so they can show just how good they are, for views, attention, etc. And more and more, people are calling them out for actually putting the animal in harms way / hurting it to be rescued in the first place. Like a couple who wedged a Sea turtle between some rocks and had it stuck there in pain for over an hour, while they filmed the "Process of rescuing" said turtle.

The imperium thriving is the benefit. These people are just corrupted so that they need twice the benefit not to be evil.

I feel like it's' because we see so many works where bad people do bad things and are punished, and thus the midwits fail to realize this is some sort of karma showing bad things illicit bad actions upon them, or good people stand in opposition of bad things. Instead, they somehow arrive at the thought that bad things give you bad things, thus good things give you good thing. And so they have a minor brain malfunction when they do what they believe is a good thing and get the bad thing. This of course assumes the tourist doesn't subscribe to the postmodernism school of thought, where the only good thing that matters is what they think is the good thing, or whatever you'd call it when they automatically assume any "underdog" faction is the good thing that is fighting off the ultimate evil bad thing.

I did what I feel was right by giving it mercy, but that sure doesn't make me feel any better. I don't want to imagine what a virtue signaler would do if presented with such a dilemma.

His dog had mauled them horrifically [And the mother died], and he came seeking comfort because he was too weak willed to do what you did. To end their suffering. So he pitifully asked and pleaded if it was okay, that he just left them [to die of their wounds, or starve]. All for personal validation of his own feelings of inadequacy. They'll hate you for the dogmatic answer, but to give them mercy and comfort them, means they will be too weak in the future to do the right thing as well. I can, and have, done the same as you had to do. It feels terrible. I had just raised 4 orphaned raccoons for over a year, and released them. When I hit one driving home one night. Back end paralyzed. I did what I had to, and was miserable for weeks. I cried for hours that night. I've shot/hunted probably hundreds of the things, when they get into the farms and butcher chickens. Never an issue. but to have to mercy kill one that had just been minding it's business. That broke my heart. But to leave it to suffer a fate worse than a quick death, to starve, or worse try to live for weeks while paralyzed, never to recover. Well thats the price of "Being good".

Yup . I even miss mutant chronicles too with its "dark sci-fi meets pulp" -aesthetics that was some sort of counter to WH40K which sadly died and was an awesome alternative too. WH40k was still awesome in the 90s with its Rock'n'Roll and Grungy charme behind it . It was the 2000AD Comics to the marvel and DC back then .

That was a bit before my time so I'm not nostalgic for it exactly but I can recognize that regardless of my feelings towards the current aesthetic something was definitely lost in transition, and that's a real shame even if I do kinda prefer the current look.

Someone here on yt was talking about war40k art from its beginning to today, sectioned them into 3 styles - grimdark(the one you mention), grimdustrial(between that and today's) and grimderp(6th/7th ed? onwards). I kinda prefer the grimdustrial period, for it is detailed and harkens to old style at same time. I won't even start on guns(quote from 1d4chan "brits suck at designing guns(azrael's new bolter as an example)).

Tbh, they're also one of two "good" factions. Although obviously "good" in this context merely means the civilians are able to possibly, maybe, potentially live an entire lifetime without dying a horrible death. It's a bad chance for it, but there's still a chance. The others? You won't survive to 5 years old.
