A Tourist's guide to Honiara, Solomon Islands

Part 2 of my South Pacific trip.
From Port Moresby, I fly into the Solomon Island's hectic, pot-holed capital Honiara. I walk about seeing the main sights, then catch a taxi into the hills to see the American and Japanese War Memorials.
Honiara isn't pretty, but its safe enough.

Although Solomon islands is undeveloped but you hardly see people sleeping in the streets compare to developed countries. Solomon islanders have no plenty cash but we still survive by eating free fresh fish, fruits, vegetables out from the garden and ocean. Solomon islands is really bless with tuna fish that you can not see in any parts of the world which developed countries depend on us to feed their growing populations. Solomon islands is rated as best air quality in the world without any air pollution with chemicals which we can used rain water as our drinking water is free compared to some place in the world rain water is acidic not safe for consumption. Solomon islands is always rich in natural resources that developed countries depended on us to survive in bigger cities and improved the livelihood of its population. Despite this poor in infrastructure , we always thank God for Blessing us with Natural resources that we can free access it for survival without cash money.

SO TRUE!! i have left my island Home on the year 2000, 19 years now and have seen so many changes through this video. only thing that struck me and made me sadden a bit is the fact that the memorials are so much cleaner then our towns and predominant buildings in the capital. but i'm forever hopeful that all these will change one day!. I LOVE SOLOMON ISLANDS!!

Even though you labelled Solomon Islands as a hectic, pot hole but as a indigenous Solomon Islander i really appreciate what my country blessed me. We lived happy, togetherness, and the safest place on planet where no terror wouldn't be interested to attacked it. Solomon Islands set a history where World war 2 battle of Honour was taken placed since 1942 and Tourist love to visit Solomon Island because of the Oral history published through the world. As an Aussie who spent 3 years in Honiara, I would trade Honiara for Canberra any day. I loved the place. This git just saw the exterior. He did not meet the people, get to know the place, know where to go. He did not even go snorkeling ;) Of course he missed the real islands. And the beauty and joy of the place. He might have been better taking a boat to Auki or Tulagi than a taxi to the Henderson Memorial.

@@laughingbad Not far enough away. The Malaysians and the Japanese absolutely pillaged them through the late 80s and early 90s for timbers found nowhere else in the world, poached fisheries, gold and other resources. Now the Chinese are wheeling and dealing. They have been poaching fisheries illegally for years also. Sharks are often seen floating, finless in the Western Solomons. I have not eaten pineapple and enjoyed it since 1984 when we left Honiara . The Pineapple boat from Malaita could be smelled on the morning breeze before it was seen, I reckon. lol. Such good fruit. Sitting in mango trees, eating fresh mangoes and dropping into the river for a wash after :) Good times.

Run down, dirty, pot holes - what do you expect? The country has been through years of civil wars and clearly still has not recovered!! Do you even know about those? Honiara would have been in the centre of most of the fighting because it is the capital. It has been many many years since I was living in Honiara and so much has changed. The only place I actually recognised in the entire video, was the Holycross Catholic Cathedral (8:13). And if you were doing this tour on a Sunday then of course everything would be closed. No 24 hour shopping for these people!! The Spaniards name was Mendana. (8:20) He named the Solomons after King Solomon (in the old testament) because he thought the islands might be a source of gold. Of course the weather is hot. Pretty much 30 degrees celcius every day all year around. That is what I spent 3 years living with. I doubt that temperature has changed. Most of those memorials are new to me. But if the American memorial was built in October 1980, I left the country in January 1980!! If you had been able to get to one of the other islands, and met the local people, I grant you, you have had a much nicer time. The islanders are very friendly. Those living in Honiara have probably become as Europeanised as we westerners are, especially if they are still recovering from a civil war and living in a city with pot holed roads and bad sanitation. I will tell you this - Honiara was a MUCH nicer city back in the 1970s through 1980s. I have photos of the main road being tar sealed with NO pot holes, and the rivers being much cleaner than what you filmed. I think the civil war destroyed a lot of the infrastructure that has not yet been repaired. You could perhaps be a little less sceptical and maybe learn some of the history before you start making judgements.
@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494
@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494 4 года назад
These are really good, fair comments. Goodness, I haven't been back myself since the early 80's! and yes it was much different. I did still understand where the video was coming from, though - limited time, equally limited range of experiences - I don't think he meant any harm. But making reference to the more recent history of civil strife would have given much needed perspective...

Thank you bigman for the video showing the capital town of Honiara in Solomon Islands where attended college, worked before moving to the United Kingdom in 1990. Born and went to school in Reef Islands, Temotu Province, outer eastern part of the country. I must say that the capital was more beautiful before Independence in 1978. Every 10 years of the past 4 decades more and more natural beauty like parks and flowering trees and shrubs are destroyed and replaced with bid commercial buildings which is mainly own by foreign businessmen like the Chinese, etc. I don’t know why the Honiara City Council does not have a policy to make business owners in the city centre to be responsible to beautify the surrounding of their shops, department stores, office and restaurants. Potholes and dirty, stench and the roads are the worst in capital Honiara. Sorry for pairing such a bad picture but I love country of birth so much and I want visitors to be able to have great experience and memories instead of seeing a capital city that looks like a logging settlement. Happy Isles people are naturally happy people, proud of their surroundings but that is lost with you get to the capital city that should represent them. It is the failure of the national government and Honiara city council administrators I’m sad to say. They got the wrong end of what development should mean. Theirs is to build more foreign business owners and have locals to be their slaves. Praying that in next 40 years there’ll be more Island entrepreneurs and business owners. I now live in England, United Kingdom but my heart and dreams are forever in Happy Isles of the Solomons. God bless the Solomon Islands from Shore to Shore.

Maybe next time you should try going to the villages and the beaches, they are all so beautiful❤ Honiara still looks similar to the way it did when I used to live there and it may not be developed, and all sorts you had mentioned but the people, the culture makes them so beautiful. We judge countries by economic standards but why can't we also look at them by their people and culture because these make the experiences. Money and industrial standards are just materialistic .

I was lucky to get the chance to work in Honiara on two occasions. I loved it. I will get back there one day. The people are great, probably the most friendly I have ever met. And even though they live a subsistence lifestyle and have massive unemployment, they’re mostly happy. Yes there are smells and rubbish in the street, but bear in mind that because the people live that way, they won’t be paying rates. By the looks of your hotel things are improving for tourists, I stayed in the King Solomon. I hope the Chinese don’t change the place too much. Hello to anyone that remembers me 😊👍

The thing that makes the Solomons richest are its people. Whether from the Western Provinces, Isabelle, Malaita, Guadalcanal, all are wonderful people, happy to just be. Not chasing impossible dreams like we do in the west, always trying for more. They seem content with what they have and if they get a little more, are grateful for it, do not just take it as their expected dues. I loved the Islands, but more than that, I loved the Islanders. By not interacting with the locals, you saw the veneer and missed the beauty it conceals thinly beneath.

I like watching down-to-earth, real travel experiences like yours. They're so much easier to connect to. Looking forward to watching your Vanuatu one. edit: oh dear, I see quite a few people weren't too impressed. It's a shame you only had the short time available and were in the least charming spot (though the views from the hills were lovely and left me quite "homesick"...) Hopefully you can return one day and branch out into the islands (I confess I only recall Honiara from a stay in relatively early childhood, and have never been to the other islands myself). Sadly all family are gone from the islands now - except a handful of cousins in Noumea my mother unfortunately lost touch with. Cheers - Maude

Honiara is not representative of the Solomon Islands by any stretch of the imagination. The country has experienced years of civil unrest which has impacted development in the capital. With all due respect a 48 hour trip won’t allow you to understand the complexities and nuances that dictate everyday life. I encourage anyone travelling to the Solomon Islands to actually meet the people and travel to the outer provinces! It is a beautiful place with beautiful people 🇸🇧

The commentator if possible should be forgiven for his narration, for he is reporting based on his living standards, and his experience- from industrialized world of paved roads and well manicured alleyways, even in small towns and rural areas where roads are in great shape. Being a country that does not thrive off of tourism we do not see foreigners that much. Most foreigners aren't attracted to the real island lifestyle that we offer thus explains why very few visit our Islands. It's natural for people to be hostile towards what they aren't familiar with. What are costs like over there? Considering how much traffic there is, I wonder why no one doesn't just ride bikes or something. A bit ridiculous

All you say is good but are you Christians? Because today, if you reject Prophet Kacou Philippe, then it's Satan that you call Jesus-Christ and whom you worship without knowing it. Noah, Moses, Elijah, Jesus-Christ, Paul and each prophet had his book and was the Way, the Truth and the Life in his time. And, today, for you, Prophet Kacou Philippe is the Light of the world and the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can be saved unless by him. Today you are Christians, not because you walk according to the Bible, but because you walk according to Prophet Kacou Philippe.

I think you must own a tourist business some where in the world or work for any tourist business billionaire some where in this planet..Thus, your main intention is to stop tourists from coming in to the Pacific to enjoy the beauty of the Islands in the Pacific..Remember, tourists around world, if you want to see the natural beauties of your Islands 2000 years ago,,come to the Pacific Ocean and visit the Islands in the Pacific....

4:35 I can read Japanese. I see lots of female names, so I guess they are not soldiers. Either military nurses, or wife or daughter of the settlers. I guess they all commited suicide just before the American military overtook the island.

resorts on other islands, mate. Honiara's essentially a business centre and central launching pad - and, from what I see, it has sadly deteriorated since I was last there (but got bigger and much busier!). The terrible exchange rate is heart-breaking...

I know foreigners portray solomon Island according to western perspectives or compare to their standard of living...to them, Honiara is dirty, too many pot holes, un organize CBD and corrupt government which is true in some ways. Fun fact: we don't have any real homeless people. If we don't make it in town or able to survive in town, we have another home in the province to survive. While compare to first world country or to other civilization world, they only have one home and that is the city.....if u don't have any Job, u become homeless definitely. For us, nope if we don't have any Job, still we able to survive in the village life...simple and peaceful, no noise pollution, stress worries from the corrupt world and government. In addition, no major Wars, no racism issue like in the white man's world. However, in the Solomon Islands only some people of our own always bring the negative image of the country and this action act as a barrier that hinder developments...some animalistic attitudes compromised the cooperation of the leaders of some provinces to cooperate in the decision making. (Outcome) Some people no longer proud to be a solomon Islanders, but only proud of their own provinces....
