When I started working at a Center in 1989, we had the same communication switches with the red lights, as shown in this film, lol.

Whenever I watch these kinds of old films, I wish I could turn back time to those days.

This was great. I started in 1971 when we were just beginning to come out of the dark ages. I used a lot of the equipment shown on this video. It brings back good memories. Thanks!

I last saw this movie in April, 1968, in the first week of Flight Data School at ZJX (Jacksonville ARTCC). Little did I know then that, ten years after this film was produced, I would wind up working in the two principal facilities featured in this film (ORD and ZAU--Chicago ARTCC). Things hadn't changed much from '63 to '68--I'm a veteran of shrimp boats, PPI radar (at ORD), scan converted radar, and those CAA transmitter select switches on the overheads (all the way into the late '80s).

My dad told me all about the "hoppy" scopes and shrimp boats he used to use at ZAU and Kansas City ARTCC. When he worked in STL, he used to let me job shadow him occasionally on Midwatches, because I was looking at ATC as a possible career. They actually had a hoppy scope in the STL TRACON, but hardly ever used it. One of the main things he taught me, which I never will forget was decoding the hourly weather observations, which came over the Teleautograph. I have an app on my phone which has them.

13:18 we had that same console into the 90's, better radar screen but we had the same black pushbuttons under the guy's right hand that was our interphone system.

I wish you could still fly from Chicago-Meigs Field to KORD, land on a ramp and walk to a gate with no security. Back in the days when people still "dressed" to fly. Nice Eastern Air Lines ELECTRA in the old livery in the background.

@nicpetnic I would say yeah. Tons of monitors throughout the building. At the sector there are 4, 1 for the radar screen, 1 for the flight data (assistant side of the sector) and the last 2 for the touchscreen communication systems.

Even back then flights from ORD to LAX took off on Runway 32 at Tango 10 -- some things never change.

Wow! We were shown this during our ATC Indoctrination at CYVR. Love the DC-8, love the dress slacks, white shirts and ties. Man, we looked PROFESSIONAL! A hoot to see PPI (Plan Position Indicator), Shrimp Boats and PAR (Precision Approach radar). Now all I need is the Density Altitude film "With this baby we can go anywhere!"

Interesting that at this relatively late date they are using 2-digit (presumably 5-bit) « reply codes » for secondary radar, and not 8-bit, 4-digit 4096 transponder codes.

It's amazing how little the National Airspace System has changed since then. Most of the info covered is actually still valid. People wonder why our airports are plagued with delays. The airspace system definitely hasn't grown along with aircraft numbers and passenger numbers.

My dad was an air traffic controller, who began his career in 1962 in Chicago ARTCC and worked in 4 other facilities, retiring out of St. Louis Tower/TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) in 1988. When he began his career, all controllers had to wear white shirts, black ties, and black pants. Fortunately, it's not that way, anymore. I almost went into ATC, but decided there were better ways to make a living.

That's what happens when you de-regulate the industry. Air fares drop to the point, that airlines cut each other's throats to survive, all the while, nickel and diming their employees. Things were a lot different before 1978.

The golden age of aviation, How is it that it came from that to regional pilots having to work 16 hour days, make $21k as a FO just to get that 1000 hours of PIC jet time to be eligible to be considered as a serious candidate for a major airline.
