READ DESCRIPTION!
Here is a little tribute video for my favorite train, the class 303. Also known as the Glasgow Blue Train. I used as many pictures and some videos I could find. So if any of you recognize any of your videos you made or pictures you took then I hope you don't mind.
About a month or 2 ago I emailed Bo'ness railway and SRPS (Scottish Railway Preservation Society) asking about what their plans were for the last 303 as nothing seemed to be happening. This was the reply I got:
"Dear Finlay,
At SRPS we fully realise the historic importance of the Glasgow Blue train. We intend to display it to the public in a new carriage shelter which is nearing completion at Bo`ness.
Sadly, for the foreseeable future we have no plans for restoration due to lack of resources and the huge cost of stripping the asbestos from the vehicles. We have not yet decided on the colour in which to paint it which will be a cosmetic restoration in due course.
Glasgow Transport museum have no interest in the train and indeed refused the offer of similar vehicles to the ones at Bo`ness.
We work closely with NRM and it may be that at some time in the future the train may be loaned to York. At the present time they have no wish to take and display it due to, among other things, lack of space.
Thank you for your interest and rest assured that we will do nothing to jeopardise the future of the train.
John Evans, Chairman, SRPS"
303 032 is now safe in a new shed at Bo'ness awaiting cosmetic repairs and more.
This year (2012) 303 032 finally made a rare active return at this year's Bo'Ness Diesel Gala.
Music performed Billy Connolly
Hope you enjoy.

Always loved watching this video as a wee boy as the 303s have always been my favourite trains (favourite livery was Orange/Black with Strathclyde Transport branding), always used to cry as its sad only one got preserved. Gorgeous music, lovely footage and an overall lovely tribute to a spectacular feat of Scottish engineering! (Paisley to be specific) Being from the Dumbarton area myself I can say I love the trains that replaced them (Class 334 'Juniper') but I doubt they'll ever amount to what the Blue Trains were. Thank you for making a childhood classic to me

I was a guard at Helensburgh Central '79 to '85.My schooley at Polmadie was Tom McGorran. We had a veteran of Monte Casino, one of Market Garden and another of Rhodesian Railways. One of us expired after too many Irn Bru cocktails and another got his mother in law pregnant. That is the edited version. What a crew. They were days the like of which will not be seen again.

Hi I was twenty seven years railway starting as a junior railman at westerton, there was a story of a guard on a run up to airdrie took a bad stomach and needed the toilet he couldn't wait until the next stop so opened up an inspection hatch on the floor of the guards van and had a right dose of the scoots that supposed to have hit the axle and sprayed back up into the van, just wondered if you heard that, was it true or just a railway myth.

I'm on here at 6.13. I'm the guy in the red and blue jacket with the black shoulder bag. Couldn't make Bellgrove but I managed to get possibly the only photograph of it arriving in Queen Street Low Level. I still have the whisky miniature they gave out on the train. It will never be opened as long as I live!

My favourite train the Blue Train. Burn in Partick but moved to Knightswood just before they began to install the electrification system . I watched it at Westerton Station as it progressed then failed before they got it working properly . Thanks for the memories. I know the effort it takes Cheers Charlie

What a great vid and a great choice of music too. I've got so many fond memories of these old boys from my childhood and student days on the Hamilton Circle - the view of the driver from the front seats, the gold and black velour seat upholstry, the ceiling light fittings with the tungsten bulbs and the deedle-ee-deedle-ee deedle-deedle-deedle-ee of the compressors sitting in a station. Lovely stuff! Thanks for the post

Excellent video with fabulous musical accompaniment from W. Connolly, Esq. As a child and a teenager growing up in the Helensburgh area, I travelled on the AM3s, as they were originally known, frequently. A favourite Saturday trip in the late sixties/early seventies was to catch the 08.29 express from Helensburgh Central, non-stop from Craigendoran to Charing Cross via Yoker, and alight at High Street. We would then take the no.27 bus to Polmadie and bunk the depot, before returning to High Street, catching another 'blue train' to Springburn and walk to Eastfield for another shed bash. Then, after a fish/or haggis supper, we would spend the afternoon photting and spotting at Central and/or Queen Street before catching the 18 35 Oban train home to Helensburgh Upper - usually behind a 27, but occasionally a 24 or 25. Happy days!

ok its sad when old trains that have worked so hard come to the end, but as the saying goes 'time waits for no one'. Here in Liverpool we had the class 502' and 503's that worked so hard and had to be replaced by newer trains the 507's/508's. But very soon those then new trains the 507's and the 508's will be replace by modern units after a long hard working life. The end comes to us all in the end, time indeed waits for no one.

@BiggerThanJesus09 Ah I see, thought that would be the reason! Well Im a child of the 90s so I only know them in their last refurbished state. I think me and my brother were allowed to go in the cab of one from Largs to West Kilbride. It was awesome. Love the 303. And Yeah the last 303 was saved by the SRPS as is sitting in a shed at Bo'ness for restoration. hope they do a good job. Wish more 303s could have been saved from scarp and be restored to their original blue glory

As said the best seat was to the right of the driver at the front. They had a distinct smell inside not unpleasant just 'old' with a bit of a electrical pong. Helensburgh to Queen Street for a day shopping then home. They were always warm and you had no bother dosing off (particularly as you weren't at risk of missing your stop) Memories of a simpler time......

@NeptuneGodPlanet Thanks dude. Oh yeah I read about that. Not something you wanna wake up to. 303s sure had their fair share of incidents and accidents. But they were good hardy beasts, Thats why I like them, they are the working class of the train world.

I like the 303s, though I never rode in one not being local. But whats remarkable is the fondness Glaswegians have for these frankly rather ordinary units, while elsewhere there is little or no interest in electric traction especially multiple units. In fact of all the MK1 BR AC EMUs, only one Great Eastern class 306 and 309, and the Glasgow 303 and part of a 311 have been preserved, which after 44 years service I think is sad. What was it about the 303s though that endeared them to the locals?

Wish a second 303 was preserved too so it could be restored back into its original livery and old interior. Oh well too late. Anyone fancy starting up a new trust and build a new 303 from scratch?

@MrJezza31 Good luck with finding a place to store it and making all the replacement parts and removing the asbestos. Would you restore it to its original caledonian blue and grey or keep it orange and black?
