314s were still common on the Cathcart Circle and Neilston lines until just over a year ago. Great video.

I liked the old fashioned (to me) looking 314s on the Cathcart Circle.

Lovely video again that captures the daily working in Scotland ... but oh dear! Someone left the headlights on at the rear of the unit at 2:20 😳

Oh yes, this brings back memories. In the early 80s I was a postgraduate student at Strathclyde university, and I stayed in a student residence in Bearsden. I took the train to Glasgow Queen Street (low level) every day. Most services were worked by 303 units, but some were worked by 314s which were still quite new. The 303s were originally painted in electric blue, and some people still referred to them as the " Blue trains". The orange livery started to appear in 1983 ( I wonder what Catholics thought of it). Hyndland station which we saw here is actually a re-sited station. The original station was a terminus on a short spur from the line from Partick. The station was demolished, but the tracks were still down when I was there, and used as a stabling point for the emus. I expect they are gone now.

Thanks for memories, always nice to know what used to be in these places. I do remember there used to be a depot at Hyndland (both physical and Train Crew) although i never saw it myself but it was in the ABC's of the day.....

The livery was referred to as “Strathclyde red” to avoid any sectarian troubles.

I'm glad the 303s lasted well to get a brace in 1996 between Motherwell and Glasgow Central. MC Metals were mighty busy in 1989!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
They were choping lots of locos back then too. Some 303s were converted to OPO and refurb'd while others were not done and kept their sliding windows until scrapped.

I guess that 90 must have been almost brand new when this was filmed. Sad to think they have now all but disappeared on passenger trains - though I guess they will be around on freight and charters for a while yet. 90001 and 002 have recently been repainted into Intercity which makes for a delightful blast from the past!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
Yes, they would have been new at this time. I seem to recall some of those delivered in freight livery working on the Lic Street-Norwich's now & again back around 1990 time.....
@soundseeker63
@soundseeker63 3 года назад
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus They did freight liners to/from Ipswich yard from around 1990 but I don't think they did passenger service to Norwich until 2002, except for possible emergency rescue purposes.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
@@soundseeker63 That could well be the case, i do seem to recall the 86s suffering reliability problems around that time and grabbing a 90 off Ipswich could well have been the answer! I do recall seeing them and have seen pics as well.....

Class 311 electric units look almost like the Class 303 sets except they were built by Craven's.

Interesting mix of motive power. I'd forgotten all about the 314s, apparently there are still 2 left.
@andythebud
@andythebud 3 года назад
I used to get the 314s only just over a year ago on the Cathcart Circle/ Neilston line trains. The two that are left are retired but one is apparently being converted to trial hydrogen power and the other has been set aside for possible preservation.

Thye must have been very fast off the mark on pull-away. I drove 315s at one time and they were quick although we had an extra coach, quicker than 313s which had PCM traction equipment while the the 315s were thyristor controlled.....

What's the main difference of the class 303 and 311 and how many sets of both I miss these old trains
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Год назад
The 311s were a later build of EMUs, needed as the electric system expanded. They were constructed by a different builder but were mechanically compatible. For some reason none of the 311s were converted to OPO but then again, neither were all the 303s so treated.....

It looks to be quite sunny that day, the video camera's back then weren't as good in dealing with sun & shadow as today's cameras are....I used to prefer a cloudy day over a sunny one as it meant no shadows and better filming!
