I made a last minute decision to make the eight hour drive to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in Minnesota to capture an image I had envisioned to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the annual lighting of the beacon.

I really like both photos, but my favorite is your first photo with the light shining out to warn the mariners of the shore line. What a great segment! Yes he does look like a light house keeper!! Thank you!

Kevin, I’ve journeyed to Split Rock Lighthouse several times, and to see the “lighting” is on my bucket list. By far I like the first photo the best. There are a number of notable stories about the light keepers over the years. Fascinating. Also loved your commentary.

I grew up near the North River in Massachusetts and I followed boat and ship traffic in and around Cape Cod. In November 1975 I was recovering from a broken back from an off road motorcycle accident which caused me to require a wheelchair for locomotion since. While in SCI rehab in November of 1975 I followed the in vain search for the Edmond Fitzgerald's Crew. It had a lasting impact on me and those in the sea faring community. Devastating accident but at that time we did not have the access to monitor weather changes as we do now. Thank you for this video about a moment in time that many of my generation will remember for the rest of our days. Personally, 1975 was the one year I would like to forget in my 69 years. I guess we all have one year we'd all like to forget.

Wonderful as always Kevin! The Woodrush was the first boat on the scene from the Coast Guard. Was transfered to Alaska and was revered there by the locals. She was then sold to the Republic of Gana. She assisted with the Valdez disaster. Also saved passengers and crew from the Holland America Princendam fire. She is often overlooked, but historic in the Great Lake and Alaska

The shots were amazing, but the first one was my favorite. I have to say knowing why the lighthouse was lit, the first photo brought tears to my eyes. Yes, Ed looked every bit the lighthouse keeper. So glad you finally made the trip, it will be something you'll remember every November 10th.

Wow, spectacular video Kevin. They are all beautiful shots but I guess the first shot is the one I like the best. The last time I was at Split Rock was 2005 when I drove around Lake Superior.

Very nice, someday I’ll try this…the full moon rising behind the lighthouse in December is very cool as well, that also brings out many photographers.

Bravo! Both are exceptional! The first one is iconic and the other is a tribute to those who didn't forget those aboard and the tragic story. I have been to in-class photography and online classes, and I have learned more by watching your videos than in the other classes. You keep your explanations and applications simple and not overly complicated. With your pleasant demeanor you are a true teacher and storyteller. Thank you once again for a wonderful video!

A masterpiece of a video and a wonderful tribute. I preferred the first image without the people and had the beam of light. I really like hearing about how you set up your compositions. A lot of thought and care goes into your decisions. That lens heater is and will be a game changer! Absolutely wonderful. Thank you for bringing us along with you.

I have a question sir, do you ever use a smartphone such as an iPhone for your photograph ?
@KODOPhoto
@KODOPhoto 5 месяцев назад
I use a smartphone sometimes to frame up a shot before I drag my camera gear out of the bag, but only on one occasion have I ever made a print from a smartphone. The quality when you blow up the image just isn't that great. If I were only posting on social media - like Instagram - then maybe. I have a nephew in Corpus Christi TX who uses his iPhone exclusively on an Instagram site he created called "The Walls of Corpus Christi "and they are fantastic.
