Fantastic video Kevin. Had the pleasure of visiting Duluth 4 years ago. That tower was well worth the visit. I'll be up there again next month visiting a friend who runs a channel there showing ship arrivals/departures.
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for the instructional format of this new one. Love the new architectural genre you are exploring. A favorite of mine and looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing your trip to the Duluth canal.
Really enjoyed this video, love the diversity of what you shot in this video and your locations, also cannot wait to see the next ones from the North Shore. Safe travels
Great post, as usual, Kevin. As an aside - after watching your channel over the last year or so I decided to bite the bullet, and took delivery of a new Canon R50. Your description of the lenses & settings you are using for your shots is and will continue to be very helpful as I get started….on up to the Welland canal for my inaugural shoot!
I am not a photographer and know absolutely nothing about composition, shutter speed or ISO! However watching you work is like watching Bob Ross paint. I can’t describe it, it’s just awesome watching you work/play. Keep up the amazing work.
Another very interesting video, sometimes you make the best of what you're given and run with it, the pictures are stunning,, thank you for sharing and travel safe
Another beautiful video Kevin, nice pictures too. As long as you are up that way go to the top of Carlton Peak. The Temperance River Gorge is also very picturesque.
We loved visiting Enger Tower and park last year, and it was right when the Viking Octantis sailed into Duluth for it's first cruise. We have some impressive pictures of her taken from the rock ledges at the Enger park area by the pavilion. (*needed a 70-300 lens to really see her from up there*) The next morning it was so foggy in the Harbor we had to drive across the Lift Bridge and go almost all the way to Minnesota Point to see the Viking Octantis sitting at anchor near the Convention center as the fog swirled around her. We didn't get to see her arrive or depart but we did get to watch and get video of the Great Republic sailing out past the Lift Bridge and exchanging salutes with the Bridge.
After shooting over 700 videos at the shipping canal, I had to chuckle when you noted just how fast the ships come in... and that sense of panic when you realize you're not getting the shot you planned for. Been there, done that! It still catches me off guard, especially for certain vessels that really come in hot. There simply isn't much time to adjust settings or composition on the fly. Having said that, the Paul R. Tregurtha is also one of the "darkest" ships to shoot at night, making her a real challenge. There isn't much to see, unless you crank up the ISO. Even then, the best shot is usually when the ship passes through the lights that illuminate the bridge... and that window of opportunity lasts about 3-4 seconds. Hope you visit the Twin Ports again in the future. It's always fun to see a familiar place through someone else's camera.
Kevin that shot of the aerial bridge from the side looking down the street is fantastic! Never seen that view before, and of course, the way you capture it puts it on another level. Great stuff!!
Here in Southeast Michigan, we have had sunrises so hazy with the Canada wildfire smoke you can't even see the sun. Until it finally burns through it around noon...Sunsets have been so dim too. A sickly pale orange Sun where you get no colors except the Sun itself, and you can literally smell the burnt ash....
Kevin, the boat that was at anchor is not the Cort. The Stewart J Cort has a red hull and the wheelhouse is at the forend of the boat. I am betting that it was one of American Steamships boats. The American Spirit or American Century frequent Superior often. From one boat nerd to another. I have several photos of the Cort. She is my favorite of the footers. I love your work and if you get to northern lower Michigan give me a shout. Would love to share some fine whiskey with you. Dan
Another attention grabbing video Kevin! I like the addition of the mechanics behind your images, very informative! Question: have you ever used a colored matt on your photos; or is it always white or black? Thanks again for sharing, cant wait for the next one! 🥰🥰🥰
I was awake and watched 'Big Paul' sail in on the Duluth Canal live cam that morning and it was as spectacular as always. Im sorry to see you missed getting your shots. I dont know understand the technical aspects your talking about but I do know the results are beautiful! ✌️🇨🇦
Even when u think you didn't do so well, you still have some beauties to show us at the end! Fyi, that's not the Cort at anchor in the lighthouse pic, it looks like an Algoma or Am Steamship rear superstructure-only boat. Stewie has 2 superstructures. Hope to see some cool 2 harbors shots in an upcoming video....maybe a thunder bay stop(?) ...hardly anyone shoots the ships there.
livingabovethe12th, you have a keen eye! My marine app said the Cort, but on closer inspection you are correct! I always strive to be accurate but sometimes I miss. There are enough boatnerds out there who work to keep me honest LOL! I appreciate you stepping in. Cheers!
So I live in Duluth, have done a few videos from the canal, but I really feel like that’s overdone, so what I’d like to do is show some different perspectives, maybe drive around town. The issue is I only have a phone, can’t afford fancy equipment. Do you know of any way to attach a camera to a car (dashcam style) just to try something different? Would love to show the stuff outside the touristy areas everybody sees
