This is the 42nd episode of my French learning series, Follow My French. In this episode I share with you a trick/tip/hack/method I use when I can't remember something that I'm trying to learn or keep mixing up.
The trick involves creating associations, link, connections, pictures, diagrams, memories involving what you are trying to remember. I give examples that have genuinely worked for me when trying to learn French, some examples of how you could apply this to your own struggles, and end by offering some 'memory solutions' to the problems of my subscribers.
This method could be used for anything, not just language learning. For example remembering dates for a history test, birthdays, street names and shopping lists!

What i do to remember gauche and droite is sorta like how in english to remember left and right when were younger we make an 'L' with our hands and the one that makes an 'L' is the left, but with this you can put your pointer and your thumb to make a 'd' (sorta like an OK sign) and Droite starts with d so yeah :)

Thanks a lot Aurella!😊 the moment I pronounced DROITE I Immediately thought it sounded like RIGHT so I didn't have a problem with that, however I do mix up peux and veux without even realising sometimes😂.

Nice techniques. I also get confused with droite and gauche until one day, when I came across the word 'droits' which means rights. so I associate both of them together :-)

omg i use the exact same method when trying to remember the different between peux and veux!! as for cheveux and chevaux, i remember it by thinking "vaux" is like vauxhall, the car manufacturers, and horses can be used as a mode of transportation... it's weird but it has always helped me remember!

That's cool Adam! Yeah if I team that up with my idea too I should never get them mixed up!

I do this all the time and it really does work! Thank you for these specific tips though, will definitely use them! If you have any more I’d love to hear them (for French).

I'm learning french and its frustrating me that i can remember the most random things i heard once years ago but if you read 3 french words to me and ask me to repeat them 20 seconds later i cant remember them. I'm trying to get the pathways to these sentences imprinted in my brain but cant find the right techniques to do it yet

I am 13 years old and I am currently learning French.I am Romanian and french is at the base of this language so I am so lucky because many words in french are wrote the same in romanian language and some of them mean the same thing wich it helped me so much but some other things were like chinese to me,not gonna lie 😅.But most of the time I can translate any french word in romanian so easy, because I immediatly think of the word in romanian and it's kinda like a click for me so this helped me so much. But,again some things don't really make sense, for example some verb conjugations are hard to remember,or the ends you ad to a first group verb,I still trying to learn these, but I seriosly can't connect them with anything,so another advice that might help is:try to make many exercises with that particular thing you are trying to learn.Like conjugations, for example so you can learn how it ends for every person and so on. I had trouble with the french word "carte" wich it means map,but in romanian means book. And I mean is the same spelling and all.I had to make some sort of stories in my head to think that "carte" means map and that "livre" means book. But over all, this video helped me so much and this is what I've done in the past to learn english. Super vidéo!

Yes Mnemonics work, I knew about this 20 years ago from a book call 'The Memory Book' when I was a teen, it's incredible that in ancient times communication and learning was far more ancient with the use of pictographs, poems and sensory memory, the people these days that come close to these are usually those with specific mental disabilities like Synesthesia, Autobiographical memory, or Savants, I am sure you already know about all this but I really wish more people knew especially those who are old and want to learn a new language but believe they can't because their hearing or brain cells are deteriorated with age vs a teen or someone in their early 20s

Voir is to SEE, and AVoir is to HAve. . .and to be savvy, is to savoir (to know) - that's how I remember those

The way i learned "gauche" and "droite" was by nemorizing at least 1. For example, "droite" starts with "dr", "d" sounds like "the" and "r" = "right". So "DRoite" is "the right". Then i know gauche is automatically "left" :) great video

I always mixed up Nous and vous! So just like your suggestion I thought hmm..So plural you/formal you is "Ni" in swedish and we is "Vi" in swedish. Vous= Ni. Nous= Vi. So the first letter is switched. So when I see Nous I know it can't be Ni since is also starts with N, therefor it's Vi. And vice versa

For gauche and droite I made a c shake with my left hand and an inverted c which looks sort of like a capital d. C D

Aiden Martin great idea! I suppose the C shape kind of looks like an incomplete G. I like this one!!!
