I never leave reviews. Watched first 2:30 minutes of this video and called BS.... Got a block of wood and a my rubber hammer, 2 minutes later a knot that was in my rope for years is out. Holy moly by brother from down under, Heck yeah... BRAVO and Thank you...
One way to keep these knots from happening is NEVER use an overhand knot for anything. Always use a figure-8 knot instead. Figure-8 knots are much easier to untie.
Not sure what I was looking up but came across this video . Got a knot in some braided line on my boat . Been there at least 5 years , never been able to even move it . Bugger me !!!!! Subscribe , done
I had a tree saver and recovery strap linked by some idiot (it’s not important I’m the idiot). This got them separated. You’ve earned a subscribe from me, sir.
Aussie man for the win. I'm a Florida resident barreling down for Milton. I'm native, we don't leave normally. They're not as bad as people make it out to be this one. Possibly not as bad as they say. It's gonna be, but just in case I'm wrapping some stuff down with straps, and what not. My veteran dad used my straps to tow a vehicle. Useless straps. Now the hurricane is upon us in neeeeeeeed them lol. This saved me a trampoline and few others yard items that can't be moved.
Had two knots in a rachet strap. I have been cussing about them to myself for years. I though they would never come out. They are gone, thanks to this video. Thank You.
Works great! A 4x4 friend didn't undo the loop when strapping the rig up, didn't think I'd ever get it out.. especially since it's synthetic! Soaked it with water and a couple whacks on smooth concrete and good as new, thanks for this
My sincere thanks for sharing this! I thought I'd never get the knot out of a strap used to tow my 1955 Bedford S-Type lorry (loaded with a Cropmaster tractor) out of some soft ground with a David Brown 1594 tractor. Lots of weight, lots of pulling, significant knot. But less than five minutes of work with a rubber mallet had it free. Excellent advice, thank you! John (West Yorkshire, UK).
You saved me a ton of work Dan the man!!! Excellent information! I had 4 bad knots and had no idea what to do to get them undone. I looked it up and you were the first one I found and it worked even better than you showed!! 😊
Omg, thank you for this video! You just saved me from having to buy new hammock straps. I used a regular hammer and after a few seconds of gentle tapping, the seemingly impossible knot was out!
I had a tow strap that I had a knot in. The knot has been in there for at least 15 years and used for towing countless times with the knot in it. With this technique that knot came out in about two minutes! This works...Thanks
WOW, I have a canoe, raft , kayak and boat rental business here in Alaska and I have thrown away many many straps in the last 33 years in this business. For some reason renters like to put a knot in your rachet straps. If I would have known... What a great job for the NEW guy every year.. thank you so very much Come see me in Alaska
Thanks a bunch Matt! Had an overhand follow-through knot on a rock climbing sling which had been tied since the mid 90's and I thought it was never moving. A few choice taps with a cabinet-maker's mallet and it loosened right up
My brother, I needed to use a strap that had a filthy knot in it. Mind you, it was double strap, double knot and had been underload. Now I was on the road and a strap had snapped so that's why I had to use this knotted up one with no choice. I googled how to undo it and found your RU-vid video. You bloody legend it worked, had it undone within 30 seconds of hitting it with a malette 👍 The load safe. I'm safe and so are the public. Thanks again
Pulled a 300lb tree branch on my property with some poly rope and got some serious knots in it, said I bet there’s a a better way to get them out besides a screwdriver and damage to the rope, sure enough e few minutes with a rubber mallet on a peice of scrap limber and boom, untied! Thanks brother, what a tip!
Thanks Matt, You can always tell if someone is a motor mechanic or not when something is tight and that’s when the first thing they go for is the trusty old hammer. I also refer to it as a “persuaders “, or a “knockrometer”. People always look at me as if to say “what the hell are you going to do with that??” I just smile and say “watch and learn.” Great tip thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jon
Matt!! Once again you prove the adage that "a hammer is the most valuable tool I'm the toolbox". Had a 7 yr old not in a medium duty strap. Actually used the ratchet body to pound it atop a plastic dumpster. Five Minutes of whacking and rolling and out it came!!! Bravo!!!!
Great video! I had nylon slings that had a clevis and a ring cinched on tight. You can see the knots work loose from the rubber mallet and block of wood. Thanks for posting!
Thanks so much for this video! I🎉 did not believe it would work but we hit the knots with a big stick a few times and now we got our hammock down instead of cutting the rope.
You sir are freaking AWESOME!!!! I've Tried a lot of things and have a lot of life experiences but have not heard of nor would I have thought of this trick in a million years!! Just got a tight knot out of my favorite ratchet strap that was tighter than a bulls butt in fly season and it only took 2 minutes! Thanks again for the video. Liked and subscribed!
Where the known weakness in a knot hits, is 1 1/3 diameters from where the flex stiffens: the edge creates a shear plane which reflects there. Although the break can be sudden, catastrophic, it starts with a shear which has started earlier, and can be present in the rope. Inspect it carefully after unknotting, particularly when torsioning it, and consider treating it as aged rope/strop thereafter, unsuitable for life-critical loads.
Mad Matt, thanks a lot! I had stabbed my thumb with an awl, put oil on the knot, all to no avail! In desperation, I googled "removing a knot" and got your video. This knot was a 1"wide nylon strap that had been wrenched down tight. I couldn't budge it. Watched your video, went and got my rubber mallet and in 15 seconds, I got that knot loose! Thanks again!!! Happy New Year!!!
I had a knot in a strap and couldn't get it out. Something told me search youtube and this was the first video that popped up. Hit it with a rubber mallet and it came loose in a couple of minutes! Thank you!
OMG THANKS SO MUCH! I had a massive knot after doing 3 sand recoveries today, I thought I had to buy a new snatch strap but thanks to you I saved at least $70 for a new snatch strap
Thanks for this excellent video. I was hand-knotting a pearl necklace and accidentally dropped a knot in the wrong spot and it was pulled tight. I didn't want to damage the silk cord by picking at it so when I found your video and watched it I got my solution. Many thanks because it worked perfectly. The silk wasn't damaged at all.
Thanks a ton! Or a metric ton lol I had a guy with a decent hitch and two recovery points broken down at an intersection, so I figured he knew what he was doing and gave him my never used tow strap to set up while I swapped my trailer hitch ball for a proper recovery hook. Instead of just placing the two hooks on the PERFECT recovery points in 1.5 seconds, he tied my brand new tow strap into 5 knots and wrapped it around is frking axle!!?? I got most out today but the couldn't get the last one!! You earned a subscription with this knowledge, thanks again!!
I've had a seriously impossible knot in a pair of pajama pants for YEARS now and it didn't occur to me until today to look up a video on how to undo impossible knots. So glad I found this because I immediately took the pants outside and started hammering away. Glad to say the knot came undone. The fabric of the tie ended up ripping due to years of being stuck like that and washed and dried and whatnot, but I just tied the ends back on (a bit messy looking but whatever, they're pajamas!) and I'm able to tighten my pants again! Thank you for this video!!! -Eastern Sierra Nevada, California
Thanks! Saw this yesterday, tried it today. Rarely does a fix you see on RU-vid work as perfectly as this one. Really only took a couple minutes to get a super tight knot out of a strap!
Brilliant, just tried this on a strap that had been knotted to go over a tow hitch and used to try and drag a heavy cast iron pot out of the frozen ground, it worked a treat!
Brilliant ....you just saved me a whole lot of grief getting a knot out of a recovery rope that we ooppps on today....couple minutes of working it and good to go again THANKS!!!!
Had a strap that was knotted tight then frozen. This absolutely did the trick! Thanks very much for sharing this useful bit of info. Much appreciated. Cheers from Canada.
Amazing! I’ve had a strap with a knot in it for years (never did know how it happened) it has been used as a log choke, anchor point for snatch blocks and for winching out stumps with a 3.5 ton tirfor winch, I thought that knot was there forever (or until the strap broke) but a few whacks with a heavy rubber mallet on a stump and it began to undo, a few more whacks and I had a knot free strap!! Wow, thank you 👍🏻
This worked a treat, unbelievably easy. Took 4 knots out of 2 straps in about 20mins after pulling a half-fallen Gumtree with a ute, was well and truly knotted. Thanks mate
Thank you! About 5 years ago I was ice fishing with a large group of people, and a pretty bad snowstorm took place. I became the one of the lakes vehicle rescue guys. The snatch strap ended up with a knot as tight as a ball of steel. The knot is now gone and it took 5 min.!!
@@MadMatt4WD I appreciate that advice, it's in pretty good condition though, and was new when I put the knot in it. I guess I'm saying"light duty" isn't in my vocabulary.😁
I did not have much faith into that strategy with the mallet as my tow strap had a super tight knot, but it came out after 10 hits. Thank you for this!
I was skeptical and was ready to throw out two brand new 30 ft straps that were stuck together, and after trying this method I had them unknotted in less than 10 seconds. I appreciate you and your share. Thanks.
This is great! I have rope that I strapped on to a tube to pull behind a boat. All the multiple hours of towing mixed with the water turned it into stone practically and I couldn't get the rope off. Tried hammering it after this video, had it off in 10 seconds. Who knew?!
Thank you so much. I tried your method on a very tight 6mm diameter nylon rope stop knot from a generator recoil pull mechanism and it worked beautifully with no visible damage to the rope after about 80 hits with a rubber mallet on a block of wood.
Works great. Thanks. Had 3 knots in a herc strap and was going to chuck it. Got all 3 out in short order with your method. Used a pointed screwdriver to some advantage too.
Excellent video. I had a situation once pulling bushes using a tow strap. It knotted so tight around the trunk, I cut the wood and left it later to work it out. I ended up pulverizing the wood to get the knot loose.
This worked for me I used a tow rope today to tow my dads truck to my mechanic who btw works miracles and the tow rope was looking like it belonged 😮to my rear tow hitch etc ---but this tapping with rubber mallet worked wonders!!! Thank you and love your candor and style Much appreciated Romans 15:13
This worked so freaking well, man! I work at Costco and often have to push carts. I use a CAT ratchet strap to tie the carts together while I do, and my coworkers kept making fun of me for letting my "rope" get 10+ knots in it and not dealing with it. Well I finally did. I used a regular claw hammer and a kettlebell as the anvil and hammered out each one, then used an iron to straighten out the gnarled strap afterwards -- now it's as good as new. Best thing about doing it is the unga bunga feeling of beating the crap out the knots with a hammer. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing these ideas. I teach knot tying to sailors at the Hoofer Sailing Club in Madison, Wisconsin. I will be sharing a link to your video with my students.
