You often need to join two or more straps together; for example if you need extra length for a snatch, want to reduce the included angle with tree trunk protectors, or your anchor point is a long way away. Here I show you four ways to join two straps, but there's one best way...then I prove it works!

Suffered the old bound straps together once. Was then shown and old bushy hack which was to take to the straps with a rubber mallet. Set them on something forgiving (matt, timbre block etc) and go to town, rotating the knot as you belt it with the mallet. Low and behold, two straps came apart. While you showcase easier ways, just don't throw out the old ones before trying this!

I'll make a video on that in due course :-)

When you are having to do 6-7 snatches with 2 fully loaded landcruisers to get unstuck you’ll be wishing you put an extra soft shackle in when trying to undo the strops. Tip though smash the knot against a rock to loosen it.

Always makes me chuckle watching people trying to separate 2 straps or even ropes tied in a similar self-tightening manner.

Great advice as always. Best bet is to be prepared and have enough soft shackles for any situation.

Always the teacher, but to be a teacher you must be a student first. Thankyou for sharing what youve learnt Rob. Bonus points for that magazine idea, ill definitely be putting two in my recovery kit.

Amongst other things I work as a crane operator/rigger, have done for years. Choking a strap or sling like shown in the first use definitely isn't ideal, not sure what the exact effect can be, no doubt its worse than the proper choke, but even in all these cases where Rob is choking it properly you still have a reduction to your WLL of about 20%. a direct join to a hard shackle is 1:1 but obviously unless you have weight on the straps you have a serious hazard if it breaks. This is good advice from Rob.

Thanks Ejay, agreed - if it's a low-stress pull and you just need an extra metre, I'd say that's ok. Like anything, know what's happening and work accordingly. It is possible to do a re-rig which is unsafe just to avoid something perceived to be unsafe.

I used to take newspaper to help light a fire. Now days I read my news on a Samsung tablet so I no longer have newspapers (or magazines). :)

Small bundle of tent rope, a towel or some dirty clothes should workjust as well.

Common problem these days, another method is to use three short pieces of dowelling that can be twisted to release them. There is the issue of flying pieces of wood in a failure, but I carry them just in case. Much better than one stick or one piece of wood.

Would this method (eye through eye…not sure if there’s another name) be the best option if ropes with soft eyes (e.g., winch line to winch extension) not straps? Would this method be stronger than soft shackles? It seems like you would avoid D:d / bend radius issues with this approach even if it’s a little less convenient. Thoughts?

Soft shackles are a no brainer. Magazine method is very old fashion. Always keep an extra soft shackle and you don't have to go through this whole ordeal.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 года назад
It's old fashioned but it works as you may not have a soft shackle, and if you do then you may not have enough to go around. So it still has its place.

I've used a aluminum cinch bone but the rolled magazine would be safer in the event of a failure.

My winch came with wire cable. The directions that came with the synthetic cable I bought to replace it with say that i must remove the spring loaded winding guide that is used with the wire cable. Is this true? Thanks, John Green
