I got the chance to help deliver this boat from San Diego to San Francisco last week and spent 4 days and nights on her. Unfortunately we either had no wind or big wind and seas right on the nose, so I didn't get a chance to really see how she sailed. There were flashes, and it was obvious she is fast. As far as accommodation, there are really only 5 berths on the boat. The forepeak has a small v berth with a smaller fold down pipe berth above. This spot was too bouncy in the rough conditions we saw to sleep in under way. Only one of the settee's is long enough to sleep on. The aft cabin's double is very wide, but quite short. At 5 9" my feet were pressed against the aft cabin side. The cockpit works and we were very glad to have a full eisenglass type enclosure, which is not shown in the video tour. It was quite cold and while there wasn't much spray when it was blowing, we would have been well soaked after a couple of hours without it. The 27HP Yanmar is barely adequate for a boat with this much windage. At one point we were head to wind in close to 30 knots and she simply would not move with a double reefed main. We had to put in the 3rd reef and bear off to get moving again. The engine is also very loud, requiring ear plugs in both the main and aft cabins while under power. The boat is generally in need of lots of attention. There were lots of little and more major items that need sorting out. I would definitely not consider this boat to be a cruiser, but more a racer, which is what it spent it's first lifetime doing on Lake Michigan. I will confirm that it is VERY solidly built and we saw no flexing or heard any weird noises. And with a 28' beam you are definitely going to be on the end of the dock.

@@iMatti00 Actually the latest gerneration of monohull sportboats can achieve similar performance to this racer/cruiser tri, but it's not really a fair comparison. This boat was designed 25 years ago, has a decent accomodation, and is relatively easily sailed. The boat reviewed above will be raced single handed - impossible to do in a modern sport boat that requires an athletic crew. Compared to a racer/cruiser monohull, like a J-121, there are several reasons, but weight is a good start. This tri at 44' plus bowsprit of 9' is around 10,000lbs. The J at 40', is almost 13,000. There's no lead keel on the tri, usually just a dagger or centerboard. The tri can carry a lot of sail area due to it's inherent form stability. Standard main and jib is around 1200sf. It will heel to about 10* and no further. If you keep pressing, the leeward ama will start to dig in and slow the boat down. If you REALLY over due it, it IS possible to bury the ama, and possibly flip the boat, but you'd have to have really screwed something up. The tri can plane fairly easily in a lot of different conditions, whereas the mono can really only plane down wind or on a broad reach. And sailing fast is a lot easier with little to no heel. I have a 20' trimaran and I can plane in about 15 knots of breeze on my own and with crappy old sails. You don't need 8 X 200lb athletic guys on the rail to keep the boat under control. (J boats says you can race the 121 with just 5 people, but I would bet that is a nightmare if it's blowing.) There is surprisingly little hull actually IN the water. The main hull flares quickly above the water line, decreasing wetted surface area.

So if I’m understanding correctly, because I don’t really know anything about sailing except for what I see on RU-vid, do you think trimarans are gonna be faster because there’s less weight and no keel since you have the Alma‘s to prevent rollover? I know you mentioned having bigger sails but I would guess that could be the case on both a trimarans and a monohull equally.

@iMatti00 yes, more or less. FOILING boats take it to the next level with almost no wetted surface area. No hulls in the water at all. Multi hulls are kind of between that extreme and monohulls. You should look up "ultimes" which are 100' ocean going trimarans capable of 40+ knots. Caliente isn't anywhere near that kind of boat, but also a lot more affordable and has a galley, a head and several places to sleep.

Wow awesome boat. I love trimarans. Currently sailing on a John Shuttleworth 45 trimaran. Only sailed mono for many years but once I started sailing on the trimarans I would never go back to mono or cats. The speed and comfort of sail makes up for lack of space any day

Hey Jordan, thanks so much for getting the footage and posting this one! Jordan, "I personally am a fan of pretty much every Chris White design." No kidding! It's a shame that his boats have been put into production, every time I read or watch (on those rare occasions) somebody sailing one of his boats, they are always astounded. And often the folks have years of racing and cruising experience. It's great to get the "in person" experience of just walking through the boat. Good luck with the work on the F-27 - cheers!

Good to see Kurt again and I hope everything's going well for him, Lauren and the baby. Another awesome find Justin. Personally to me this is a young man or couples boat. Someone with more energy than my tired old butt, who enjoys spending the majority of time outside at play. I don't think I could use it as a live aboard with my wife and special needs son, just not laid out right for us. I'd imagine she just skips across the water though and would be a blast to sail. Great looking boat, Kurt did a great job of showcasing this wonderful Trimaran. For several years me and my wife owned and lived aboard a 2005 Privilege 615 catamaran. It was a wonderful boat, we used Key West as our home base but sailed the 615 to the Bahamas quite often, but sadly we sold the 615 last year and bought a condo in Key Largo, Florida. Julie was wanting more of a home base and I gave into her, we didn't quit sailing we just downsized, our new boat is a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran. Not a blue water boat by any means, but the perfect boat to cruise the Florida coast lines and the Florida Keys and maybe an adventure to the Bahamas. The Corsairs are known for their insane speeds they generate, very easy to sail, and low yearly maint. cost and this one doesn't disappoint....

I really like trimarans, and I like the overall design of this one, but she's in pretty rough shape and she's been wrecked and recovered, so asking $200K is WAY too much IMHO. She's going to need a ton of very expensive work, and you'd have to ultrasound every inch of those ama support struts to make sure there are no stress fractures from when she was wrecked just to make sure she's safe. Great job on the walk through and review, though. Honestly, a really cool design.

Nah. This boat is built like a tank. If she was damaged you'd see it. Fiberglass doesn't hide stress cracks very well.

Nice boat! Love Chris White designs. I’m sure it would be quite fast. And that escape hatch. When I was a kid, I wouldn’t be dropping food scraps through it, I would be dropping me through it!! Haha. Also, another very knowledgeable owner to have that nice La Vac head. Best head there is. That’s what that big Henderson diaphragm bilge pump is for above it. It also makes another emergency bilge pump. And they move a good bit of water, (and other stuff). You could throw paper towels through it and they would just pass right through. Had one and never had to touch it for 8 yrs!! Sold with the boat still working fine.

For information, Chris White does not use Polynesian/Austronesian terms for the parts of multihulls. For example, he calls the floats floats. Be sure to check out his book "The Cruising Multihull," and Jim Brown's book "The Case for the Cruising Trimaran." Both extremely informative about multihulls, and highly authoritative.

Would have been nice to see and hear about the motor model brand power etc. Was there a shower and sump system . Also info on the sails and there condition and maybe some info on what sort of comfortable cruising speed this tri would have. And lastly what type of construction is it glass over ply sandwich construction or solid Fibre glass .pretty basic questions really.

No shower sump, at least installed. Sails were decently used racing sails. Some areas of foam core and some solid. Construction was very solid, no flexing. As mentioned we didn't get to see consistent wind, but I would guess 8 - 12 knots upwind, and 15+ on the beam with no problem.

As the owner of a much smaller tri I can say that this boat would do me just fine, for coastal cruising or quick jaunts up to the Pacific islands. Whether 100k or 200k is only a fraction of what it would cost to build new.

All multihulls now days have escape hatches in order to be insured. My experience is they are as much of a liability than a safety feature as they get pounded by waves as you go fast in rough conditions, then the seals fail quickly and fill your bilge , but it's a multi so just bail the water out and keep sailing!

@@Sugarsail1 European CE regulations required escape hatches on multihulls for several years, but no longer do. Unless it's actively sinking, the best place to be is on the boat, even if it's inverted.

The mast rotates. Be too hard/unreliable to navigate if the radar reference frame could be changing by +/- 30 degrees.

Please forgive a beginners question....(I'm a day sailer, just now starting to dream of becoming more)... When you refer to a navigation area, what all can you observe and control there? What can you monitor there, and can you actually steer or guide the boat from there? Thanks!!

Most nav stations aren't going to provide any steering control from there, it's more of a place to bust out a chart. There are vessels with pilothouses though which is an interior helm.

Chris White boats cruise at 12 to 15 knots, have done 30 and have cruised the Southern Ocean at more than 20 knots. They are fast, comfortable and safe.

Walk on's almost anywhere including the tramps as long as you keep everything water tight. Theres also the top of the cockpit Bimini.

If you look a the Scandinavian Dragonflys you can see and here their approach to panel type and positions. Unless you intended to specify rigid solar panels?

Trimarans are fast and beautiful but they are expensive in every way and they are limited on actual usable space below decks. They are fine weekenders but they are not usually comfortable cruising vessels. Thanks for the review!

There are some larger cruising Trimarans that do have big cat type space..theres a Polish couple who have a slightly older design of Neal that has huge space and still retains pace. Nautistyles recently toured a new sub 50 ft Neel and it was fairly good. There was a Dutch guy who bought an older Al hulled Transat racer as a live aboard and that was quite a fab. beast.

The high price tag is a derivative of the cost of manufacturing. Figure a Main hull +2 amas + 4 akas equals to almost three mono-hulls when the dust settles. Besides the loads a trimaran is subjected to in anything over 10 knots of speed is something not to be trifled with, that is if one values one's life beyond the horizon. I skippered the Avalanche - 54 ft Hammerhead by Chris White-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfIj-W5by6M.html - from La Paz to Bahia Culebra in Costa Rica. I spent the better part of 6 months cruising the Mexican Pacific side on the way to CR, and let me tell you, that boat left nothing to be desired when it comes to cruising and living aboard. Besides, it is not every day you can sail upwind at SOG's well north of 80% true wind speed. Fully canvassed we crossed from Cabo to Mazatlan in 20 hours. Could have been 16 of the winds had picked up a bit. Not bad for a 30+year old design. Having sailed mono and cats for the better part of 40 years, after sailing that beast, I am sold. My next boat is going to be a trimaran. Any trimaran ( except maybe the Neel. Now, that is fugly contraption).

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 There are different styles of trimarans. The Neels tend towards condomaran, and had some major build problems. Rapidos are recent Morrelli & Melvin designs that seem to push a little too far towards performance over practicality. Chris White designs are fast, comfortable and safe. Chris White's book "The Cruising Multihull" and Jim Brown's book "The Case for the Cruising Trimaran" both explain different design decisions and are highly recommended, highly authoritative books about multihulls. They're out of print but available as used books.

Multihulls usually capsize by being overpowered. This boat was raced a lot. For cruising, most people set the power levels more conservatively and almost never capsize.

@@Johnsouthshore ok , a few years ago on the Chicago to Mac race in the straight of Mackinac with 70 knot wind flipped over , the crew was blown off but the skipper and first mat where t harnessed in and stuck below water , and passed away. Boats name Wing nuts I was a 1/4 mile ahead of them watching and sadly knowing there was nothing I could do. That was my last Mac race.

Spreaders are on both sides of the mast. If you look hard enough they are raked back quite a bit because of no back stay.

@@geraldhowse8597 Thanks Gerald. I typed before I thought hard enough. Because of the rack & the camera angle, you can't see the other spreader. Makes total sense, however, that they would be there. My little day sailer did not have spreaders so I've never really worked with them.

Ama is a Polynesian term for float. (Google "multihull terminology".) Chris White, the designer of this boat, calls them floats.

trimarans of this type would be great for fun quick sailing but horrible for live-aboard unless you can afford a Neel......

You wouldn't have the Spinnaker up in an 80kt squall cruising. The same storm within sight of Caliente (this boat) on a f25 c we were doing 12kts bare poles. A c&c 62 had it's mast twisted like a pretzel in the same race.

A trimaran like this will get you farther and faster (2X or a little more) so you don't need as much supplies as with a monohull. It is a super weekender, or for coastal folks a super monther. You can live on this for an extended vacation. Tanya Aibay (OK I don't remember the spelling) circumnavigated the Earth in a 26 footer. So, for the really adventurous, a circumnavigation could certainly be achieved. There are the advantages of speed, deck space for a small dingy and solar panels, storage in the amas', shallow draft and a decent amount of space for one or maybe two very intimate cruisers. This could work very well for a couple who are real sailors. It would be camping, but I would do it!

Oh. I just saw the V berth. That is stupid. Unless you're human trafficking, take those bunks out and install shelves to store sails, lines, fenders or lighter weight provisions. The amas' need baffles that reinforce their hulls and prevent provisions or other useful items from sliding around. I cannot imagine anyone stupid enough to want to sleep in one of those coffins. It needs a solid but light weight rigid dodger and Bimini (screw the canvas crap) for sun and weather protection, solar panels and a fish cleaning station on an aft railing. I am liking this boat more and more as an adventure!

This ain't a cruising vessel. This is a true racing boat WITHOUT any things people need to "cruising" around. No room, No solar No to much for comfortable cruising. The asking price is beyond reasonable.

The 28HP engine was under a box to try and contain noise. It didn't work. It probably needed at least another 20HP, but I am guessing it was all in the name of saving weight.

I love the idea of a tri, for performance boat, but it is a 44 foot plus bow sprit and will take a double wide birth, so you will be paying a LOT for a birth, yet you get the space below of a 33 to 35 foot boat. I am sure it suits someone's needs but is grossly overpriced. It does look like a fun boat, but given the costs to keep it in a marina, and the condition there are going to be limited buyers. Personally I can't see anyone paying more than a 1/3 of the asking price. I can't fathom the birthing costs of 2X53 feet as almost all marinas are going to charge double for that beam yet having such a small amount of space below. Yes it would be a blast for a season, and unless your into competing with boats that won't be competitive I don't see much market.

My guess would be that the owners/dealers don't want them to talk about the price. It could influence the potential buyers in a way they don't like or want.

Prices change, you can edit the description, but not the stated price in the video. I imagine this one will drop several times before she sells in 5 years for $30,000 you would have to re dub the video every time there was a price change.

As a person who has only sailed twice and is therefore very inexperienced, a casual viewer thinks there are too many lines on a boat. What the hell are all of those ropes for? They're hanging all over the place.

To understand the purposes of the lines, learn about ketch and sloop rig, etc, and learn the various possible sail plans for the implemented rigging plan of the vessel. The lines allow raising and control of the various sails from the helm/cockpit area. In chsllenging seas and at night it is tremendously safer to operate the vessel from within the cockpit. Sites such as How To Sail a Junk Rigged Sailboat, and Learning The Lines, Sailing Soulanis, The Sailing Family, The Rigging Guy,

All reefing lines come to the cockpit. Plus the mast rotates, so there's a line each side for that. Then there's jib furler as well as sheets and halyards for the jib, main and screecher. Once you've played with it for a couple of hours, it all makes sense.
