This video is a walk through of the new Rapido 40 trimaran that’s just been designed by Rapido and Morrelli & Melvin. The video was taken in Phuket in September 2022 just after the vessel had been delivered from Vietnam.
You can find more details about the Rapido 40 and Rapido trimarans at this link : rapidotrimarans.com/rapido-40

BTW, Jason, thanks for the great review of the bow setup on this boat. I have a Condor 30 footer. The anchor setup is miserable on it. I had to cut my anchor line last year in an anchorage down in Mexico because of wind and wave, being single-handed, and sicker than a dog. So, this bow set up is very interesting to my mind. Thanks for that mate.

I like the layout of this boat much more than the 60, much more practical and useable. It is likely an excellent performance boat, which is a highly desirable quality in a cruiser. Speed reduces your exposure to adverse weather. It reduces your need for provisions between ports and it has GOT to be fun! There a couple of things I do not understand/agree with. Why is there no netting between the bow hull and the two amas? That is a darn fine place to fall overboard. Catamaran's do it and they don't even have a central hull. The forward cabin is only ventilated if there is no rain and you are not sailing. Otherwise, all those pretty ports and hatches must be closed. Put a dorade on the bow. I'm in good shape and condition so I can probably get out of that "escape" hatch, but I am pretty confident the vast majority of people on this planet could not. That is a very small engine access in the cabin sole. I am certain I would not want to troubleshoot that engine in a rambunctious sea, or even maintain it in port or at anchor. If the engine blows and needs replacement, how do you get it out and the new one in? Rapidos are still rather rare. I have not been on one or spoken to owners. But based on the videos, I would say that when everything works, they would be an absolute hoot to sail for short time periods, like three or four day weekends. But for cruising, I would need to know a WHOLE lot more than the fluff pieces available on the internet. They could be outstanding boats, but I would want to know much more than I have found thus far.

Weight sensitive... Lifestyle change from the old days where a boat was asked to carry a garage full of bits and pieces. Transition from self sufficience to well supplied marinas around the world. I think this boat crushes the circumnavigation mission. Rapid port-to-port. Folds up and fits in a monohull marina slip. Then go ashore and spend your money in the local country. Not so much the living in remote achorages for weeks and weeks. I like people, cities and culture so this would be an ideal answer for me. Would I travel long distances without stopping? Hmmm... Would i do a major cape with this boat? Hmmm... I would want to hear about the first few people trying cape horn in this thing. How strong is she?

Love the looks and guess the performance is good? Not withstanding, it’s not for me as I’m seeking a boat for extended cruising. The exposed helm doesn’t work for me (regardless of autopilot) and having the anchor locker located so far forward is not good (etc etc).

This is one of my absolute favorite boats. I would like to see it with a tilting wheel style helm kind of like the SiriusWerft 40DS instead of a tiller setup. Kinda wish Rapido would have moved the settee aft and placed the nav station facing forward in front of the settee.
@angela1984a
@angela1984a Год назад
I guessing the "the nav station facing forward in front of the settee" can be arranged if you so desire and if you're willing to pay X amount of cash extra...
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Год назад
There would be pros and cons of both positions. Since the helm is at the back, having the nav station towards the back makes it nearer the helm. On the other hand, a lot of people use the autopilot to helm and would benefit from a forward view when doing so. So both have advantages and disadvantages. The design is sort of between a performance/racing boat and a cruising boat.
@nicholasgrogan3797
@nicholasgrogan3797 Год назад
Both would definitely have their place. I just personally hate tillers hahaha. The reason I would want to nav station that way is I think you could have a bigger more useful nav station that would also be great for pulling watch. All completely personal preference but I think it would be more of a cruiser style up vs a race style. I’m more of a cruiser.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Год назад
@@nicholasgrogan3797 Tillers generally have much better feel, and most cruising is usually done under autopilot, so sort of best of both worlds? Agree a forward facing inside helm station would fit that cruising style better.
@alansmith2203
@alansmith2203 Год назад
Hi Nicholas, yah, I get your point of view. Do you own a tri? I have a 30 foot Condor. Trailerable, PITA to put together and tear down, but plenty of boat. When you go to a wheel vs a tiller you are going to a bigger boat, dah? You are going to a more intensive enginnering solution (which has it's own attending issues of maintenance and cost). You also realize quickly the costs of a tiller pilot vs a more complex engineering problem of a wheel pilot. You loose a lot of space with a wheel versus a tiller. You loose the feel of how heavy the tiller feels when you are not balanced with the sails...not as easy to pick up on that with the wheel. Personally, maybe it is financial, but i like a tiller set up much better than a wheel. I have no financial interest in my statement....but Pelagic is the best bang for the buck on this friggin planet for autopilots.

@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Год назад
@@BilldalSWE Dragonfly has better interior design, but the Rapido is probably a much better value per performance. I like them both, but would probably get a Rapido.
@BilldalSWE
@BilldalSWE Год назад
@@LoanwordEggcorn Yeah, the Rapido is both faster and cheaper (built in Vietnam vs Denmark...) so obviously better value per performance. But when it comes to performance per comfort the Dragonfly wins. Especially the upcomming Dragonfly 40 Carbon Performance which will be 1000kg lighter than the regular version (thus close in displacement to the Rapido) and have a larger sail area. For me I'd take the extra comfort over a couple of extra knots.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Год назад
@@BilldalSWE All valid points. The Dragonflys definitely seem more comfortable and nearly as fast. The Rapidos are a bit more spartan perhaps due to their racing background via Morelli & Melvin designers (or just the design brief). Really they have slightly different design philosophies, and of course it's good to have a choice. I don't know if it's a valid impression, but it feels like Rapidos may be better suited to large ocean crossings, as that's sort of where they came from. The larger Rapidos are definitely intended to cross oceans quickly. Dragonflys can cross oceans, but seem more commonly seen in coastal waters. (And perhaps relevantly, the Rapidos started from the larger boats, while the Dragonflys/Quornings started from smaller boats.) I have not compared bridgedeck clearances, or whatever the equivalent is called on a trimaran, but Dragonflys seem lower and closer to the water than Rapidos, which would limit the sea states they can comfortably operate in, for example.
