Well Mike you certainly did justice to that piece of wood, managing to show off that grain to its best effect, and what some lovely grain it is as well. That was also a very inspired choice of finishes to use. I loved the fact that you put three feet on the base rather than just conformed to a standard rim. I do love the turner and Hooch, nice little play on words Thanks for mentioning my channel i appreciate that, Take care Steve
Always a pleasure Steve, your work is beautiful and deserves to be in the spotlight. Thanks again for sending this piece through, I just love it. Talk soon, Mike
Just a beautiful piece of walnut for sure. I love watching Steve. My grandkids have dogs, cats, anger goose, and elephants. I think I have heard him say your name in the past. I hope I see you on the next one. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Albert, I have been friends with Steve for a while now, we have each other out from time to time. I love his style of turning and he is such a nice guy. All the best, Mike
Thanks Dave, there have been a couple of negative comments but I'm just fine with that. As long as people are honest but still respectful it's all good.
Nice piece. I have been turning English walnut for about a year now thanks to a friend with a large supply. I do love the wood. Nice to see the first use of it by a fellow turner. Thank you for sharing..
A gorgeous bowl. Very well done. Some very nice grain and contrast between sapwood and heartwood. Glad the cracks did not create any issues. I expect you may want to keep this one. I have a friend who used Boiled Linseed Oil on a project. He did not know about the exothermic oxidation. He put the rags in a plastic garbage can next to the house. A fire started. Some damage to the house but caught in time and a very hard lesson learned. Dave.
Hi Dave, yes, this one is staying with me or at the vest least a close family member where I can keep an eye on it. Luckily I've never had a problem with spontaneous combustion but then again I am fairly careful in how I dispose of rags. Glad your friend only had a little bit of damage, could have been an awful lot worse! All the best Mike
.Mike, your English Walnut chunk turned into a lovely tray. Your method for creating the three feet is great. See, I told you i learn something new each video. Like the Danish Oil finish as well. I'll keep watching. Wayne from Wisconsin. USA
Looking forward to seeing your new work shop. I love walnut. Really appreciate your turns . They are so creative and marvelous to watch. I'm in Toronto.
@@MikeHolton 😁😁😁 I think they will be fighting each other over it. Your challenge, to stop this, is to make three more - one for each of them and I know they will be greatly cherished.
Hello mate. I love walnut the grain is wonderful, my daughter got me a lump of walnut from Taunton in Somerset a couple of years ago and A beautiful set came from it.
A key takeaway from this is the pre-planing by inspecting the grain of the piece. You mentioned about sawdust & CA glue for the cracks, I like to use instant coffee with glue to leave a bark inclusion appearance.
Gorgeous piece. I have a beautiful piece of kiaat shaped very similar to yours that I was thinking of doing the same. Happy you did it first so I can learn.
I have never heard of Kiaat so just had a look, the grain is very similar to Yew, looks amazing. Take a look at this video as well I did 3 months ago, it's a variation on the theme and may help more ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-D10War014.html Please let me know how you get on, All the best, Mike
Walnut is a beautiful wood & this piece is right up with the best examples. That being said Mike, you have done a brilliant, sensitive job on turning this piece & showing the beautiful grain to brilliant effect. I love that you did not conform to tradition & put a standard ring base for this platter to stand on but crafted three great feet for the piece to stand on. Hey, have you ever watched Phil Anderson from 'Shady Acres Woodshop' & his novel way of removing the 'nub' when taking off a tenon. Worth a look if you have not, he also commentates in a very similar way to yourself. Fabulous piece mate, cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks Don, yes I have watched Phil remove his nubs and I did try to copy once with hilarious results and a mild heart attack 😀, I'll try again one day.
Thinking back to last week’s ‘exciting’ fly through the air experience, using cole jaws…would it have been anymore secure using the wood chuck and neoprene?
@@fionanaylor6104 Yes! I don't think there is any doubt about it. I did however get a few tips from people like using masking tape to hold it in the jaws or glue it on there with hot glue. 😀
Lovely finish ,beautiful grain , ive just got some french walnut and its pure white with just a small brown pith so its cut up to dry , with some bits in the airing cupboard 😂
Finally I know the story behind this little toy dog 😊, this episode of your work is amazing. Very much liked how this walnut flat wood ends up a beautiful plate. Great impressive work as always. Thank for sharing your creations with us 🙏🏼
You are more than welcome, I consider it a complete honour to be able to do this and have such amazing people like yourself follow my work and appreciate it for what it is. All the best, Mike
Happy Tuesday to you Mike. Walnut, especially the English variety is one of my absolute favorites to turn. The piece you have is just a remarkable piece. Your certainly have done it justice. Brilliant as usual sir.
Nice to have friends who give you nice blanks, looked well at the end. Do you only have a 2" set of jaws? That was a tiny tenon on such a large blank in my humble opinion.
You never cease to amaze with your skills Mike. The Feet just make that for me. Beautiful piece of wood. So creative. Also learning so much from you. Was a bit nervous watching when the Jam chuck came out... Fantastic work as ever.
Another stunning piece! While I was watching you finish off, I was thinking how I could use a couple such as that to display some of my wool products at the occasional craft fair I go to... More amazing turned wood to add to my ever growing wish list lol. 😂
