I really appreciate this video, and your take/way of doing a setup. I have developed some skills in this area, but intonation is one that I struggle with. Everyone else that I have watched or listened to have seemed to refer to more of like two small left and right “ladders,” (my words): with the right starting up about 3/4 of the way up the left. When you said that you look more for a continuous arc, that resonated with me, so I picked up a new guitar that I have just gotten, and it is amazing how much better it sounds after looking at the intonation setup that way. Thanks very much! That helped a lot, along with a couple more of your tips, such as checking on relief. On another subject, that red Tele looks good, and I don’t have a Telecaster; darn, I thought I had bought my last guitar for a while.😆

FANTASTIC! Thank you SO much for this video. It's great to hear that these HB guitars will allow for a lower setup. I'm now going to purchase a Tele style and a LP style (when it's back in stock). Also thank you for going in depth on how to setup a guitar. Awesome video! And the tip on using older broken in strings while doing the setup is super valuable. Thanks again.

Thanks for the help. I bought an HB t20 and lowered the action which was too high. I'm scared of truss rods so I left that alone. My intonation was spot on after lowering the action. I was lucky I suppose. Right got to get back to open G and being Keith for a couple of hours.

Great video Mike. A tip I picked up from John Suhr is to intonate using the 3rd and 15th fret. Takes the nut slot height out of the equation and improves overall intonation, especially on the 3 saddle bridges

Nicely explained!! I expect that we all do things a little differently and I'm not sure if there is a 'perfect' way to do it, but I do mine similar to you except that when I do my Action adjustments, I start with the nut. The use of a capo (12th fret) can take the saddle height out of the equation (for the most part) and once the nut is set up correctly (to my taste) then I do the saddle heights. I guess it's all 'swings and roundabouts' though :) These HB's are great guitars, a year on from receiving my TE-40 TBK Deluxe Series and I still have trouble putting it down and going to bed at night!!

Nut should always be done last as you'll need to raise the bridge action if the nut has been lowered significantly.

Living in the Uk here. When I first got the guitar 2 days ago it was flawless. A few days later I have noticed alot of buzz. Frets are fine, I'v changed the strings, set up the intonation and adjusted the truss rod but I'm still getting buzz. Could it have been something I have done wrong? Action is about 2mm on the low E and still buzz. I can't loosen the truss rod anymore because im getting a bit of resistance from it. Maybe I have set it up wrong? Would leaving it until the next day after a truss rod adjustment work? It only seem's to be when I play it any harder than a light touch with finger picking, if I use a pick it seems to buzz, most around a and d strings. Any tip? Because im in love with this guitar and I don't want to send it back
@Chinaguitarsceptic
@Chinaguitarsceptic 3 года назад
It sounds like the guitar might be settling into its new environment. Changes in temperature and humidity can have an effect. If you are adjusting the rod keep them small and give them time to settle. A small adjustment can have a big effect. Check you have the saddle heights correct for the radius of the fretboard. If its mainly happening on two strings, this is the most likely cause. That or a high fret. Do you have a fret rocker? If not you can use a credit card. First check if the buzz goes all the way up the neck. That's likely the bridge adjustment. If not and it stops after a certain fret then it could be a high fret. If you get stuck let me know and I will do a video on it.

You can go wrong with intonation, especially on cheap guitars with possibly lesser metal, stripping the adjustment screw when trying to lengthen the scale. Loosening the string before adjusting its length will avoid this. Cumbersome but safer.

Great review just one thing, when you said about the bottom E needing the saddle taking back to make it exactly halfway as in lengh, surely that's wrong. When completing the intonation and all the saddles are staggered there all different lengths. So have they got to be harmonicly halfway? Is that right? Cheers Martyn

6:47 - Another tip... Unlike the shot here,, the saddles should always be flat, otherwise strumming or heavy playing will 'tip' the saddle, which can cause rattling and other issues longer term. Yes, it won't match the neck relief so well, but that's another sacrifice with this type of poor bridge design.
@Chinaguitarsceptic

It is a poor design but we have to work with what we have. I might change out the bridge in my upgrades if people want to see that kind of thing.

Sorry but this is incomplete. You’ve missed out NUT ACTION. Most poorly setup guitars need this lowered. It doesn’t matter how well all other components are adjusted. A high nut action makes a guitar awful to play at the low end of the neck. First fret action measurement and nut groove filing should be integral to any basic setup instruction.
@Chinaguitarsceptic

Very good point. Included in the quality of the nut but should be a separate specific point. I will amend.
