I bought one last week and like it. I got the one that can be charged via USB. A few hick ups on programming it, but eventually figured it out.

I bought one last week and really like it. I’ve had a uv-5r for about 5 years. What sold me on it was the display, so much nicer and easier to read than the uv-5r. And the larger keypad buttons are very nice.

Especially like like in Hawaii with fires. A UV5R. A garmin inreach mini and cell phone and short wave radio with am and fm . I love yeasu ft5dr that has it all

A plain uv-5r is a good start. An overall good radio for prepping is the BTech DMR-UV5X2 Pro. You can have digital, analog, GPS, and APRS.

i picked one up today. Looking for Chirp to get this added. It took me some time to figure out to program the radio, I had to find a blank slot first. Which makes sense to keep myself from accidentally dumping over something I didn't want to lose. I spent a few more to get the one with the USB charger on the back.

I just ordered a set of UV-21 Pro V2. Hope they are nice. They do have USB C charging ports on the battery.

As soon as I decided to study for my ham radio license, my workload increased drastically and I just can't do both. So it's looking like I may have to be satisfied with just monitoring the calls of others. Looks like this unit would do that admirably.

about my only complaint is it doesnt automaticly program most likely offsets in 2 meters. In 1997 when i first got my license this radio would have cost hundreds of dollars.

I just got my 17r and you talk about learning how to do X. but where do you learn how to do all this stuff? I have looked all over for a simple guide for this radio but cant find much useful info. Even on RU-vid its sparse. Any advice for where to learn the basics would be great.

I can’t seem to figure out how to “dual monitor”. What I mean is, if channel A is scanning and channel B is transmitting it will not come through. It’s essentially not receiving in one channel while scanning the other.

I have a UV-6R, and decided to give this UV-17R "upgrade" a try. I strictly use these radios to monitor railroad transmissions outdoors...they both have excellent range...far better than traditional scanners. However, I have two issues with the UV-17R (that don't exist with the UV-6R)...while the new / larger UV-17R screen looks very good indoors, it is useless outdoors (the fact that it goes "dark" after 20 seconds of illumination is -- by itself -- a nuisance). Secondly, the 17-R's audio "pales" by comparison to that of the UV-6R. Why?? Because the 17-R's speaker is behind / beneath the keypad!! What?? How strange is that?? I'll keep this new radio as a backup to the older, more conventional UV-6R.

just get a uv5r or a s9 and program it to FRS and MURS. or get a PO box and use it for GMRS also. ($35 license no test) for GMRS

Yes with this one you do, however its not illegal to listen before getting one, I suggest most people do that anyway if they want to become a ham, good to listen and learn before jumping in

I have one of these, love it. A real step up from the original Baofeng radios. One thing you never mentioned is the USB C Charging socket. Definitely the way to go now, for preppers who can charge this on a Solar panel, cellphone charger, Power Bank or Power station. It's a current trend which can divorce you from irritating mains chargers! ***just noticed, yours has no USB charging, why?
