Colonel Arthur Nugent Waldemar Powell was born in 1896 and fought in the first world war. After the war, he was posted as a colonial officer in India in 1919. He traveled the length and breadth of the country, from the foothills of the Himalayas in the North to the jungles of central India, all the way to the forests of South India in the Nilgiris or the Blue Mountains.
This particular story, titled 'A Very Dangerous Rifle' is taken from the book 'The Call Of The Tiger' and concerns the adventures he had with his two native shikari (hunter) friends. These took place in the forests of central India, very close to the area around modern-day Kanha and Pench Tiger Reserves which have since become famous for their Tiger conservation and for serving as the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book.
