This video is just for math geeks trying to explain everything mathematically. It can be done, but thinking about loops and hooks is easier than clockwise turns and algebra. I skipped through the esoteric math segments, but the video doesn't slow enough to see what's going on. I was close to figuring it out before playing through, I just needed some string. How I explain it is that you start with one long loop of string on the picture frame, and you pull a loop on each side and wrap over that side nail and hook the other side nail. The loop around the each nail holds the picture, but pulling either nail unravels the other loop because each hook is wrapped over the other nail. He also didn't say why he needed a heavier picture, because his math doesn't account for friction. And there's probably an equation that shows that a million nails won't work in the real world. But then it doesn't make sense to actually use this method to hang pictures if you want them to stay.

Hey everyone, A lot of people felt that the thumbnail was not reflective of the content of this video so I decided to change it. I am truly sorry to anyone that I may have annoyed. The change may take a few days to spread to all places on RU-vid where this video appears. While I certainly want people to watch my videos I would never intentionally trick anyone into doing it. I want people to have a good time with my channel and my content and I hope you believe me when I say that I had no intention of being misleading. If you just want to see me pull the nail in the thumbnail you can skip to 14:30.

Your video is amazing and those who think this video is worth a dislike, just because they didnt get to see a non-relevant thing, while the "whole" matter and its beauty is explained quietly brilliant and as simple anyone can understand it, shouldn't receive any form of justifaction. Apart of that it seems good that you work with feedback, even when the feedback is just intolerable. Thanks for everything! 21.000th subscriber btw :)

@rustyscrapper
@rustyscrapper 6 лет назад
This appears to work in concept but I need to get better string. The twine is binding up on the nails and ruining the effect. It also seems that you aren't supposed to ever make a full loop around any nail, if the formula tells you to pass under a nail you need to just skip past it without looping it around or else it doesn't work. So basically the math doesn't care where the nails are in physical space it only cares where the string passed by the nail in what direction even if the string never touched the nail.
@GoldPlatedGoof
@GoldPlatedGoof 6 лет назад
I want to give you mad props for actually trying it. This is something I would have mentioned if I had kept on going but you are basically correct. It is possible to do this regardless of how the nails are positioned on the wall (so you can make tons of crazy patterns). However! You do need to be extremely careful. If you really want to guarantee that the looping pattern will be correct, you should pick a point on the plane and call it "home" (ideally where the picture will eventually hang) then draw paths from each of the nails to home so that none of of the paths intersect either each other, or any of the other nails. Now, whenever you want to loop around a nail, ALWAYS start from home, move along the path and then make a full loop around the nail, and then RETURN home along the path, then do this again with each consecutive nail. You can always tighten things up as you go along, but this strategy will guarantee that regardless of whatever crazy positioning you choose, the configuration will be correct. This strategy comes directly from the algebraic topology involved in proving that the Caley Graph is correct. Thanks for watching!

Nice analogy with the Rubik's Cube. Actually, in cubing we also call move sequences which follow the form ABA'B' a commutator (the ' indicates the inversion). They're typically denoted with [A, B], just as in mathematics afaik. Keep on doing those great videos, really love that stuff!

You are the biggest geek I've ever seen express their thoughts, opinions, and passion in a video here on youtube. I've never enjoyed watching a video more than I did this one. I've never related more to someone's interest in something either. In fact, I paused the video to take my Rubik's cube and go experiment with something. It took me and one other person about an hour to only figure out a little bit about it, and we are still confused and want to investigate/experiment even more. Just wanted to say this is REALLY cool and was an instant subscription from me. Thank you.

All constructionproducts used in the USA must meet California standards and be labeled as such. Just as all construction codes for new construction must meet California code + Miami/ Florida codes combined. Meaning all homes and business must be able to withstand huricain force winds and 5+ earthquakes nationwide. Turns into a load of shit somewhere like WV or Arizona where neither condition apply.

The reason that some of the Cayley graphs have loops is because doing some amount of a certain step is equivalent to doing its inverse. For example, twisting a side of a rubik's cube 3 times is the same as twisting it one in the opposite direction. Thus, 3 a's equals an a inverse in that scenario. In the hexagon flip, a is the same as a inverse.

I finally found a channel to satisfy my need for complex math on my grade 8 brain! Thank you so much.

I always have that feeling: math is pure black magic.

That moment when you pick up your 5x5 puzzle cube seconds before he uses a Rubik's cube as an example.

You forget about the friction caused by the yarn resting. With one million nails there is too much overall friction unless each nail is extremely far apart from the rest (the one that you pull).

I used a symmetry argument. Loops around one of the nails worked (removing the other nail made the picture fall), so I made the loops on the other nail the same.

Man, I love your videos. It’s so great to see a new channel pop up where the person is not only really excited about the subject matter but also cares about making the video interesting to watch. Two more things: I noticed that some people complained about the amount of memes in your previous vids. Ignore those memeless simpletons. Also, your hair is god damn luxurious.

In many ways, I find an ungodly huge amount of possibilities more interesting than a huge amount of possibilities.

This is my first time seeing your channel and I am so hooked because of it. You have the most unique way of explaining the theory, I gotta say mind blown! I'm going to build the largest I have enough nails and string for. Thank you for the great lesson.

a,b,a-1,b-1 is also know as "sexy move" in the cubing comunity

Only R U R' U', other commutators are not the sexy move, e.g. Nicklas

I just remembered that those are also called commutators in cubing... everything is connected! It all makes sense

I like the similar "puzzle" with regards to locking a bike. So you have one of those wire locks and let's just imagine it's really long. You can do all kinds of crazy stuff with it, but in reality you're not actually locking the bike to anything at, you can actually just take the bike away while the lock is still locked. And maybe you can extend the problem to locking the bike to multiple objects and such.

Maybe to get the painting to stay hung on only one nail, you would have to cross the string over or under itself to make a sort of knot

3:59 shows a more logical explanation for any number of nails. Wrap the string any way you like, remove one nail, get the cat to pull on the picture... the picture falls.
