vesta talks with her favorite person, host vj donnie simpson. Here she's at her best. this interview is before her weight loss. Vesta is a fun person and a great singer her new album is (distant lover)2007
I hate that they would block her success because of her size. She was so, so talented and gosh dog it, she was a damn beautiful, vivacious and funny woman! Beauty comes in many packages and this was a GORGEOUS woman!
I have to admit, I'm a 35 year old man and I remember when I was a kid, I had a crush on Vesta Williams. She just exudes beauty inside and out, and it don't hurt that she can SANG! Man, I miss watching Video Soul with Donnie Simpson back in those days. That was when we still had real music.
Love this interview. Vesta is just a joy to watch. She was such a hilarious, extremely talented and interesting woman. Love her! I'm so sad she passed. She was too underrated.
I think Jackee' drew her character "Sandra" from Vesta....look at the mannerisms and the antics. I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, they were best friends... RIP Vesta!
Vesta was always sexy.... even when she was heavier. Some people are just like that.... some people just have it. I mean she was funny, smart, and multitalented. She is the kind of person that you fall for hard. But some men probably would not be able to handle her independant and free spirit. She speaks the truth 20 years before the true reality about entertainers. This is what she is... A true entertainer. The best part is she relishes in it. Talk about someone today's singers can learn from.
Got damn, her and Jackee act tha same [lol]... was just watching Sister, Sister and she played 'Monica' Jackee's sorority sister... how wild is that? lol...
I was so bummed when I read tonight that Vesta has died. I remember buying her 1996 "Vesta" album and loving it. Sure, she had the Chaka Khan phrasing and timbre but she also sounded like herself. (she sang backup for Chaka - and others - before going solo). To read that she died alone in at the Homestead hotel in El Segundo (close to LAX) with several bottles of prescription pills present, hit me hard. Another Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, etc.
Vest and Jackee...separated at birth.....I didn't realize how horrible Donnie was as an interviewer. He could intro songs but sitting there and talking to singers---uuuggghhh!! Vesta is dropping dimes on this interview--Woooo!
@Giderduikkelige It's hurt my heart as if I knew her personally boo. SMH I simply loved VESTA! Hearing some of these songs that I hadn't heard in years just brought back soooo many memories. Her harmonies gave me chills!!! I was just talking about VESTA with my mom a few weeks ago. I was saying how she sang back ground for CHAKA( you had to be the bomb to sing back up for CHAKA) and how she did those Sandra impressions. A funny, sexy, and I'll go as far as saying annointed lady. DANG!!!
I don't know how Vesta did that with her mouth at 2:16? And that Jackee impressions she did? That made me laugh! I love her music! May her Rest In Eternal Peace.
@ jenja718, Vesta at one time was a back ground vocalist for Chaka, as like Me' Lisa Morgan, Audrey Wheeler, N'Dambi, Vicoria St. James, Lisa Fischer, etc who've went to solo careers (some sustaining and some one hit wonders). However Lisa is a great background/accompaniest singer. Highly sought after in the industry (long time Luther Vandross, Rolling Stones background singer. She's fierce). Funk This cd tour she had Toni Scruggs. Watch out, she fierce!!!! Tiffany, still on board and to watch!
How old is Vesta? Back when I was 14 watching this interview as it aired in 88 I thought she was 40-ish. But what do kids know about actually judging the ages of grown people, right? Now that I'm 20 years older, she looks really young, like in her mid-late 20s. btw, that is a great interview!! performers don't have that much personality anymore.
Actually you would have been correct in your assessment because even though Vesta was much younger than she looks here it was because of the style of makeup clothing and environment of the 80's. Everybody looked older than they actually were to cater to the baby boomer crowd. Us Generation Xers had not yet inundated the pop culture (see Hip Hop's influence nowadays). If you notice Whitney Houston's first videos she looked more mature than her 21 years.
To me in this interview she seems like a cross between chaka khan and jackee' from 227 at times 2;13 to 2;17 she acts goofy as hell might I add funny to with her up spirited self.
@zodiak650 yeah I dont recognize BET any more I think the complaint back then was to have more variety like shows on social issues instead a lot of videos but still you knew BET was definately about us.no disrespect to BET but seem like now they trying to be a black carbon copy of a lot white shows you see on tv these days.nothin black and original
