@@martymar1964 She had /has the worst stage fright I have seen in over 50 years of gig going. At a Mazzy Star gig in Birmingham (UK) around 1995 , she walked off stage after around 4 songs. She said "you are too demanding " very sad. Also others I have seen having issues with stage freight are Lana Del Rey (used to puff non stop on cigarettes ), Hannah Reid (London Grammar ) is physically sick before live gigs .Even Florence Welch suffers , which may surprise many . But Hope is the only one I have ever seen exit the stage very quickly after the start of the gig.

back in the 90s when i was 14-15, i visited my cousin in Long Beach (she was in college), and she took me to meet her boyfriend at the time. we ended up at this random house in LA. turned out her boyfriend's dad was the drummer in mazzy star. i was in total shock and could barely speak. i loved this song so much and the fact that i got to meet the drummer was too much for my young mind to handle. but i still remember that moment to this day!

This style and more (as I wrote in a rely above): There were a lot of great women musician-songwriters who came up then. Listened a lot to Liz Phair (some cathartic stuff there LOL), saw Sarah McL. live when Paula Cole opened (got her CD after that show and listened to it a ton), pj harvey... tons of Polly Jean's stuff, and saw Luscious Jackson live (they will never get old). There were solo works & multiple bands with some overlap of the likes of the Deal sisters, Tanya Donnely, Kristin Hersch A little earlier, music goddess of the time Kim Gordon was kicking around great stuff with Sonic Youth (and eventually was requested by The Breeders to direct their "Last Splash" video with Spike Jonze). There was so much great music from women in the '90s. It's like someone left the gate open and they found their time to emerge.

Mazzy Star! '90s alternative , shoegaze/psychedelic/dream-pop music. Fuzzy guitars, feedback and ethereal/dreamy /moody vocals. Also a desert rock kind of feel as well. Slide guitar (often heard in country music and blues) I don't know why they had broke up so soon during the '90s. It was odd. They were good. See their other videos like "Into Dust", "Flowers in December", "Halal", etc. They were from California, Hope Sandoval is Mexican American , pretty, with nice dreamy voice. If yall like this. Check out bands like Slowdive, Jesus and Mary Chains, My Bloody Valentine, Cowboy Junkies, Lush, Ride, Silversun Pickups, Lana Del Rey, etc Also Norah Jones is similar! (2000s) lol. Guys. You hit me hard with this one. This song, and Hope Sandoval's incredible voice, mesmerized me from the first time I heard it, and it still does three decades later. They were never HUGE as far as a live group goes, due to Hope's innate shyness (she insisted there never be a spotlight on her while on stage, EVER). Sadly, we lost guitarist and songwriter David Roback in 2020. This is one of the most enduing songs you'll find, period. If you do another Mazzy Star song, check out "Into Dust". massive attack. especially teardrop. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is otherworldly. Cocteau Twins would also be a good rabbit hole to fall down.

Her voice with these lyrics is everything. That guitar just cries its sadness while she tells her story with stoic gen x melancholy... This song still gives me goosebumps.

"Fade Into You" is what it sounds like to be sitting in your living room, stoned, watching the snow come down. Don't remember where I read that, but it's one of the most apt descriptions of this I've ever heard.

The amount of time I spent as a teen listening to this album while writing sad poetry is kind of ridiculous. But Hope Sandoval’s voice is sublime. “Five String Serenade” is another good one. Amber, you are right about your assessment of 90s music. And to me, as a teen, it was like the antithesis of 80s focus on glam and show. Grunge was definitely the opposite of 80s hair bands, and the 90s women-whatever genre-were all about empowerment, feeling their deep feelings, doing their own thing, etc. 90s alternative and grunge music spoke to us awkward and big-feeling teens and made us feel…seen? I guess? Idk, but it was a connec ion I don’t think I’ve quite had with music since. Tori Amos is also a MUST when it comes to 90s female artists. She was (and still is) just so cool. But there are sooo many awesome 90s female artists and you guys are just starting to scratch the surface! 😊

So well said. It is a reflection of the shift in culture. Children of the exuberant materialistic 80's coming into their own in the 90's. Even though it was grunge, I think, there was an optimism about how the world in the 90's would be different. Maybe we were just saturated by the 80's and needed to feel something real and more stripped down. I know the 70's and 80's had ground breaking women but the 90's women, upon reflection, were different and progressive. Generation X.

This song, Hope & the band is like a moody desert stark eerie kind of alt-country...it has a David Lynchian feel, even Lana Del Rey later on...love it...

Btw Mazzy Star was a one hit wonder. That's their best song by far.

Glad you finally got around to them. Yes, please explore more of their music - Blue Flower, Bells Ring and Flowers In December are all excellent. Just keep in mind that they're not a band that had "bangers", they're very much a moody and chill band with pretty awesome lo-fi guitars by David Roback, RIP.

I’m glad that you’re touching into 90’s. There is one 90’s band that you jade yet to touch on:Dave Matthews Band. I suggest you start with their first hit “What Would You Say”. Also I’ve noticed that you have neglected to do more R&B. It’s a genre that has taken a back seat to Rock for you. The Rap and Hip Hop that your generation listens to borrows heavily from the R&B of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.
