Georgie Porgie is a child's nursery Rhyme in case you don't know. A lot of the old nursery rhymes have been forgotten these days. Georgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, When the boys came out to play Georgie Porgie ran away
When the heir to the throne wanted a woman, she didn’t get to say no. He destroyed them, ruined careers and left them with kids he never recognized. He had at least six illegitimate children. He pretended they didn’t exist and moved on to the next mistress when he got bored. Toto has a way of making you dance to and about a disgusting individual.
Always down for some Toto!! Fun fact - Cheryl "Got To Be Real" Lynn does the female vocals on this song! Some of Toto's other bangers include "99", "Pamela", "Animal" (the HORNS!!), "Stranger in Town", and "Stop Loving You". Gotta love David Paich's keyboards here!! Also, I think you would love the Alan Parsons Project. "Eye in the Sky" would be a great place to start.
I agree completely been trying to get them to check out Allen Parsons Project for a while now. Even enticed it a bit by explaining that Allen Parsons was a sound engineer for several Pink Floyd projects
Yes, "Eye in the Sky" would be a great song to react to, but make sure you do a version that starts with the instrumental "Sirius". They should always be done together!
@@talon8537 Oh lord that would be awesome.Eye in the sky and Time.I believe the live versions were the best performances when Alan and J.P did the vocals
Cheryl Lynn sings backup on this. “Georgie Porgie” is a very popular traditional English nursery rhyme, dating back to the 19th century. The song was first published with different lyrics, in James Orchard Halliwell’s collection in 1840. The author George Bernard Shaw (born 1856) refers to the lyrics of Georgie Porgie from his childhood, so this version must be at least that old. Although there are no evidences about this, the lyrics of “Georgie Porgie” are a reference to the 1st Duke of Buckingham, the courtier George Villiers (1592-1628). Th
i THOUGHT i recognized that backup voice somewhere!! Makes sense, they were both on Columbia's roster at the time..She was probably working on her own stuff in a nearby recording room (I've been there, they had 4 back then) and someone from Toto says, "Hey , Cheryl's here.. for the chorus --maybe she could.?"
Cheryl was in an ajacent studio recording some vocals for her own project. Since Steve "Luke" Lukather said in an interview that he refused to sing the Georgy Porgy" lyric, so, they asked her to do it. And she made that part her own.
The same genius who co-wrote this song also wrote “To be Real”, “Lowdown “ and “Africa”.. David Paich.. that’s probably how they got Ms Lynn to do background vocals
This song was Toto's follow-up to their Top 40 debut hit, Hold The Line. The song was a bigger hit on the Billboard Soul chart than the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It peaked at the #18 spot on the Billboard Soul chart. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it peaked at the #48 spot during the early summer of 1979. The female backup vocals belong to the one and only r&b singer, Cheryl Lynn. The song is a banger indeed!!!
Georgy Porgy is an old nursery rhyme. The female vocalist singing Georgy Porgy is Cheryl Lynn who you reacted to with the song "Got to be real". I believe Toto was the backing band on that track.
Toto were some of the greatest session artists.Meaning members played on some of the greatest tracks by other artists including Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson.Jeff Porcaro is and was known as the hardest working drummer in the music industry.Toto members grew up together and once they found total success no one could stop them and continue to this day despite the tragic passings of several members. These guys are THE super group along with The Eagles and are my favorite musicians period.
The whole rhyme is “Georgie Porgie, Pudding and pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, when the girls came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away”. Some of the earliest references to it are from the 1800’s with lots of regional twists the words used.
Another fun fact - I watched an interview with one of the members from Toto. He (David Paich) said the idea for the chorus in that song came from a conversation he had with is friend who recently had a child. He asked "What cha been reading these days?" His friend hands him a nursery rhyme book. "Georgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, When the boys came out to play Georgie Porgie ran away" The rest was history!
These guys were session players who met working on other people's records. Cheryl Lynn on back up vocals. The phrase about "Georgy Porgy" was a playground taunt. A children's rhyme to tease boys who tried to talk to girls.
I love this song. I bet a lot of people requested this. I know I was one of them when you did other Toto songs. Thanks! Another good one is I"ll Supply the Love with Bobby Kimball on vocals.( his vocals are on Hold the Line)
I'm so glad you all put me up on this version I didn't know this band made the song first. My first time hearing this song was through Eric Benet and Faith Evans. Love their version but I'm very glad to know about this version now good job y'all
Amber, don't sweat it. Whenever my wife is around people with strong accents or watches tv shows or movies with strong accents, she unconsciously adopts the accent. It has been really fun to pick on her about it for years.
Keyboard player, David Paich wrote the song with his father Marty helping compose some of the music (as he often did). Those background vocals are performed by Cheryl Lynn who was a Broadway performer and a common background singer for the time. She was a touring singer with several bands also. Including for Diana Ross where she would handle the parts sung by the Supremes when she did those songs from Diana's early years. In her memoirs she says she tried out for the first season "American Idol" where the preliminary judges (tho ones you don't see) told her she was too old. Since then the show has changed their age limits.
OMG! YOU FINALLY REACTED TO MY FAVORITE TOTO SONG! I know I'm screaming but it's just that it has been my jam since the 70's and you guys surprised me with this. And yes, GEORGY PORGY was more on the r&b/soul side but man, what a great song! Kudos to THEE Cheryl Lynn with the classic hook vocals. Much love guys!
Georgy porgy is a nursery rhyme and like most of them there's a historical story. This one is about the British prince George, son of George the third and his womanising ways. He kissed the girls and made them cry, when the boys came out to play, Georgie Porgy ran away
One of my favorite Toto songs. It's great seeing young people enjoying wonderful music when the music was made before they were born. Enjoy your videos.
On April 22, 2022, you posted a reaction to Cheryl Lynn singing "Got To Be Real" while on Soul Train. She is FANTASTIC and took this song over the top!
And their drummer Jeff Picaro was an awesome drummer he passed in 1992 at the age of 38 he was a session drummer for like a hundred different bands was crazy
Funny you mention the R&B vibe. This was covered by Eric Benet ft Faith Evans. It was also sampled for MC Lytes Poor Georgie. (When you can also spot a young Lauren Hill in the video.)
You mentioned that you thought there must be a back story to Georgy Porgy. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but "Georgy Porgy" was an old nursery rhyme, dating back centuries but still well known in the late seventies when this song was recorded.
This is literally my first time ever hearing this song! I wish I'd known it as a kid. We used to sing-song the nursery rhyme to our cousin George growing up because it annoyed him so much. Lol Georgie Porgie, pudding and pie Kissed the girls and made them cry. When the boys came out to play Georgie Porgie ran away. His sister was Susan, and we used to sing Wake Up Little Susie (by The Everly Brothers) to her to bug her too. They hated it that there were no songs to sing back to my older brother or me because our names aren't in any songs. Lol. Good times. :)
Several members of Toto (the guitar player, drummer, piano player) were Boz Scaggs backup band prior to Toto. You may have reacted to him This is where the R&B vibe comes from. In fact, Steve Lukethar (on vocals here) sounds so much like Boz on this cut. The female vocal is Cheryl Lynn who had a disco hit in the late 70s (Got to be Real) you'd recognize it if you heard it. Probably was in a few movies or commmercials. You wanna know the talent level here? Steve Lukethar was THE guitar player on so many records in the 80s If you hear any killer guitar solos on an 80s hit most likely it was Steve Think, Running with the Night (Lionel Richie) Beat it (Michael Jackson, all guitars and co-writing credit except for the Eddie Van Halen solo) In fact, he was very instrumental in the making of the entire Thriller album So many more The rest of the members have just as impressive a resume. Jeff Porcaro (rhe drummer, RIP, is a legend) lots of work with Steely Dan to name a few David Paich (the piano player and leader) was a known songwriter, producer and musical director for several famous artists. George Benson, Rod Stewart etc.. He also worked on the Thriller album Toto. Goofy name, but killer musicians & songwriters! Dig deep. They have lots of good ones Try: 99 Goodbye Girl I'll be over you Hydra Enjoy your reactions!! Take care of the little ones ;-)
Cheryl Lynn sang back up on this TOTO song. David Paich, the TOTO keyboardist and lead singer for the song Africa, was also one of the 3 composers for Cheryl Lynn's hit "Got to be real".
Ah yeah, Georgy Porgey. Brings back memories of easier times like a cool summer breeze! How about another side of Toto, with Paula Adul dancing, Till the End. Also Straight for the heart, Pamela, Home of the Brave. These guys are fire.
The members of Toto were famous session players on many pop and R & B hits in the 70's thru 80's including on Michael Jackson's THRILLER and Boz Scaggs' LOWDOWN!
I never knew this was Toto's song -smooth. I would say I love Toto, but only know 3 songs. Jeff Porcaro is one of my favorite drummers - so solid. He played with everybody; too many artists to list here.
Actually, musicians usually pile respect on them: Eddie Van Halen considered them, insofar as pure musicianship and talent, the greatest band of all time.
First vinyl record I ever bought as a kid. Today I love this album, but when I was a kid, I bought it on the basis of Hold The Line and was expecting a rock album. I was pretty disappointed with the multi-genre sound of the album with all different styles...A couple of years later, when I grew up a little and really learned to love music, I fell in love with this album. And Toto. Great band, amazing musicians.
Toto has a big group of fans in Latam because of their mixing of different styles cause we love it. Like Los Jaivas from Chile. Toto came to Chile several times with total success because they are masters. I loved my Toto's Greatest Hits cassette!! I hope you can react to 99. Best regards from Chile!! 🙂
Love this. So groovy!! They really do it all. So talented. I have a huge appreciation for musicians since it’s lacking these days in my opinion. I’m 43 and can we have this music back please?? I never really appreciated Rosanna when it was on the radio then in the 80’s but it’s my favorite. The instrumentals are freaking fire!! 👌🏼
Toto was so bad ass that even their lead guitarist (a beast in his own right) could have been lead singer in any other band. That's him (Steve Lukather) singing lead on this one right here.
This is on my Playlist. Absolutely love this song. This was their 1978 debut album and it's absolute fire. That's Cheryl Lynn singing the Georgy Porgy part of the song!
To be clear, he’s not the player…she is. “I’m not the only one that holds you….” from the bridge of the song explains that SHE’S the one who has been sleeping around and he now regrets that he told her that she’s the “only one.”
Before Toto was Toto they were all session players which basically means they are all phenomenal at everything! Toto is in my top 5 of bands easy! I regret not seeing them when they came to Albuquerque with Journey! Try reacting to 99 by Toto! If you listen to it without knowing what it's about you'll be scratching your heads! Great song! Thank you for your reaction!
I'm surprised Jay didn't recognize this from MC Lyte's cover "Poor Georgie." She expounds on Georgie's lifestyle and turns it into a PSA, as was implemented in a lot of Hip Hop at the time.
When I was a kid in the 80s, I really got into Jazz and R&B, because of bands like Toto, who had these Jazz influences, I played drums in the high school jazz band. Thats how huge their influence was on me.
@@theodoreritola7641 I was born in the early 70s, my older brother and sister would listen to Toto, and I grew up on them… we listened to them when I was in middle school and high school.
This song brings back memories of couples skating in the early 80's. This song was actually played on the R&B stations in my city. Cheryl Lynn brings that soul on backup vocals. You should react to her duet with Luther Vandross "If This World Were Mine" it was prominent in the movie The Wood!
I grew up in the Caribbean listening to Toto, & other Genres of music scene back in the 70's -80's was mostly crossovers, innocent & clean vibes. I get transported back in time to my youthful & carefree days. Here some other music suggestions you might want to check out that are also similar category. You'll Never Know - Hi-Gloss", "Keiko Matsui - Mover", Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smiley - Gato Barbieri (composed by Santana) enjoy.
Fun fact Toto is the only band that sings a song with my name as the title lol "Pamela " The only other one that has my name is Mambo #5 and he only says it once
Professor of Rock's channel just did a video on this and they said they were stuck on the chorus because none of the band could really sing it and make it sound good...and think Cheryl Lynn was in studio said she would show them how to sing it...she did it and they loved it.
Guys, that's the amazing *Cheryl Lynn* singing the hook "Georgy Porgy, pudding pie... ". You reacted to her song" To Be Real" (aka "Got to Be Real") This song was all over the R&B radio stations in my area. Check out their songs... "Till the End" (Paula Abdul dances in the video) "Waiting for Your Love" (watch the actual video if possible. It gives more of a live on stage, in the club vibe.) "Pamela"
Btw, I see a lot of people suggesting Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real". What were not going to do is forget that she put it down on "Encore" too! She was more than a 1 hitter.
Of course this is Cheryl Lynn singing backup. Cheryl was a contestant on the old Chuck Barris produced "The Gong Show". She actually had two big R&B hits, "Got To Be Real" and "Encore". Give "Encore: a listen.
Toto’s best song, IMO! The female vocals are by the great Cheryl Lynn, who had a hit song in the ‘70s called “Got To Be Real”, which was produced and co-written by two of the members of Toto. Fun fact: Steve Porcaro of Toto also co-wrote Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”. Those boys got around back in the day! 😂😂
