War is terrifying! After watching these episodes, we can truly say that Thors was a man ahead of his time

as for episode 6... it's absolutely correct to observe that Thorfinn is being used. I think that's the exact right mindset to have about this situation. like, I think that moment where Askeladd stabs the guy on top of Thorfinn is a great visual metaphor for their relationship at this stage. at this point Askeladd has given Thorfinn several opportunities to live, when he could've let him die, and several pieces of advice that have served him functionally, when he's put them into practice. but also, I would not consider what Askeladd does to be "care" necessarily... and the advice he's given Thorfinn has led him to that brutal moment of his first human kill, where he's basically unsupervised in the midst of a violent mob, and encouraged to see it as a proving ground. this is how he's being pushed into taking that next step toward the brutality that these men call normal. I think what we're seeing is Askeladd upholding his deal with Thors, in the letter of the law, but maybe not the spirit. Thors said that if he gave his life, Askeladd should spare every other person in his crew. and sure enough, Askeladd isn't letting Thorfinn die. but even as Askeladd technically "saves" Thorfinn, by murdering a man on top of him, the sword digs into Thorfinn's body as well. the kid may be alive, but there's very little regard for how else this might be hurting him. and that goes double for Askeladd's little ultimatum. "accomplish something great on the battlefield" is an open ended prompt. Thorfinn doesn't know if he's doing well enough, unless he checks with Askeladd. and all Askeladd has to do is keep telling him that he's failing. so Thorfinn goes through this escalation of greater and greater violence, all while chasing a carrot on a stick that doesn't even actually exist. Askeladd can just coast along, for however long he wants, by implying that nothing Thorfinn does is ever good enough. and this all began when Thorfinn was like, six or seven years old... it's not like he could recognize how unfair this was from the start. by the time we see him appear before this English woman and her daughter... just look at Thorfinn's condition. his injuries, his malnourishment, his poor hygiene, his ostracization from normal people and the way they live... the way being treated better doesn't tempt him anymore. Thorfinn is learning to look at a better life, when it is placed right under his nose, and reject it. because it's too soft, too comfortable... too easy. Thorfinn can't have that. it's not for him. not until he finishes his mission... until he succeeds, he has only ever failed, and he doesn't get to expect anything better. here is a young child, being asked to choose between constant toil, where even the reward is probably an ass kicking... and a warm household, full of kind and respectful people, who don't make fun of him, who feed him, and clothe him, and bathe him, and treat his wounds. by simple tally of resources gained, this life would be a step up for him, if he chose it. but Thorfinn has been trained, like a dog, to see the treat in front of him, and not even try to eat it. because he hasn't performed enough tricks yet. he hasn't earned it, and thus, he doesn't deserve it. and the fact that this woman and her daughter are reminders of Helga and Ylva is just the cherry on top of the whole scenario. if Thorfinn can't even accept the kindness of strangers over a life of constant violence, then he definitely hasn't earned the right to go back home. but even once he does "earn" that right... can he go back home like this? how would his mother look at him, if he did? I think the most heartbreaking little detail is that, after this woman took the time to wash and brush his hair out, that's the part of him that ends up stained with blood, basically immediately. Thorfinn is a child, and he's absorbing influences that leave him without the ability to value these things... but as he reproduces the effects of how he's living, he is still hurting people. and that final shot of the broken comb lying on the ground, paired with that sigh, and the deadening of his eyes... Thorfinn might be beyond anyone's ability to care for now.

I think what's interesting in episode 5 is the way Thorfinn is starting to develop psychological problems already. and a lot of it comes from his tendency to expect an adult level of proficiency from himself, even though he is a child. he wanted to go with Thors, to war, not understanding how insane that is for a six year old to pursue. nobody expects this of Thorfinn, but Thorfinn doesn't know not to expect it of himself. in this episode, we see Thorfinn's repeated failures, because of his weakness, and we even see the men around him call that out directly. and they aren't trying to shame him. to them, it's just a fact. children are weak compared to adults. but Thorfinn is just coming off of a situation where he was taken hostage, and watched his father die because Thorfinn's life was being threatened. he'll accuse Askeladd over and over, but he's yelling so loudly because there's something in the back of his mind, telling Thorfinn that this is his own fault. there's a huge amount of guilt that Thorfinn is trying to soothe by avenging Thors. and every time he fails, it compounds. more guilt, more shame, more failure, more people who don't believe he can do anything, more expectations to measure up to, and more frustration directed at the people who mock him, and treat him like a pitiful lost animal, and expect him to die... so much, that they won't even bother trying to kill him to make sure. Askeladd makes it clear to Thorfinn that trying at all in their "duel" would be a waste of effort. everything in Thorfinn's environment has taught him that weakness, cowardice, backing down... it's all disgraceful. he's ashamed of his inability to stop his father's death, and his continued inability to do anything about it after the fact. we know that it's ridiculous to have those expectations... but Thorfinn has displayed, time and again, that part of his immaturity is an inability to realize when adult standards don't apply to him. and Askeladd and his crew are not helping this trait. if anything, they're making it a thousand times worse. also, Ylva's reaction to the news that Thors has died and Thorfinn is missing always hits me hard. she's so stoic, out of complete necessity. she has to be, since now it's just her and her mom. but this is also a trait that she and Thors have in common to some degree. Helga even gave Ylva a similar look to the one she gave Thors when he was stubbornly refusing to name their daughter in the first place... she handles Ylva's stubbornness in the exact same way. and Thors left Ylva with the task of being the provider, and the strength of their household. Helga's health isn't the greatest, and with Thorfinn gone too... Ylva cannot afford to break down completely. Thors probably felt similar pressure, as the head of their village... and Ylva probably misses him on a deeper level because the two of them are connected via this similarity in their personalities. Thors clearly cared for her very deeply, having given Ylva his mother's name, and left the battlefield in order to be her father... to raise her, and be there for her. Thorfinn came later, and doubled Thors' conviction, but Ylva was the initial kid that kept him home. and Thors was able to send Ari home too. it's still up to Ylva whether or not she'd choose Ari, but Thors knew Ari was interested in her, and he made sure that Ari came back... and that Ari knew at least whatever Thors could tell him about war, and why Thors decided to give it up and stay where Ylva was. because she was important. and if Ari is any good for her at all, he'd best learn that. this was probably the last thing Thors was able to do for Ylva as her father.
