New Bern Mall, formerly known as Twin Rivers Mall, has fallen on hard times, and has been turned bland & uninteresting by Hull Property Group.

New Bern has the biggest Harris Teeter supermarket in the world. It's huge

Fountain was in the middle. Aladdin's Castle arcade was all the way left beside Belk's and in front of Record Bar ❤ the right side used to feature Walden Books and K&B Toys. In the rear used to be a full K-Mart. To go to this mall, the Twin Rivers Mall as a kid was certainly a treat. I still get excited thinking about it.. many thanks!

I've lived in Carteret County NC 23 years now , been to New Bern MANY times, & have never been to this mall. Now go to the Independence Mall in Wilmington....now that's a mall!

The mall used to be called the Twin Rivers Mall with an odd entrance sign that was destroyed by Hurricane Florence. The mall itself also experienced some flooding in its parking lot during Florence. I don't believe any flooding occurred of the building because that carpet is still there and doesn't appear flood damaged. An interesting tidbit: This mall hosts the last remaining Annabelle's restaurant. It was a regional casual chain restaurant that went bankrupt about 20 years ago. I remember it being Twin Rivers Mall. I do not know who the original owner was, but Hull/Storey expressed interest in the mall beginning in August 2005 and purchased the mall in January 2008. The mall at one point had a GameStop, a toy store, and a hobby store, all moved out probably a decade ago at this point. The police substation opened in 2008 and was mostly paid for by Hull. The fake walls and carpeting went in sometime in 2010 or 2011. Before the mall was renovated in carpet it had a much darker feel because it had those 80s dark brown tiles. The diamond motif on the skylight was used throughout the mall as its logo. Anyway, there were a ton of empty storefronts and the mall was poorly maintained. There were areas where water was pouring out of the ceiling into containers on the floor and the area was sectioned off. The mall really seemed to bleed tenants after losing Kmart. The Twin Rivers Mall Kmart closed when Kmart went bankrupt the first time. That section of time - from the early 2002 to 2010/2011 when Hull renovated the mall into what it is today - I stopped going there. It was dark, depressing, dirty, and there really was no reason to go. While the current design is bland it's much better than what it had been. Much of this comment copied from the last time I researched this mall.

Young people today don't realize what a big deal shopping malls were in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Before cell phones and the internet, our social lives really revolved around "the mall".

Man your a baby. That malt shop meet up or general store gathering. But that was if we had money if not we'd meet at the long house

Exactly, we went to the mall to socialize we didn't have phones we had beepers.... it's so sad to me

Absolutely. But here's the sticking point. The internet (online shopping) solves the problem of people getting crammed or run over by other people in long lines trying to get into the stores for shopping for what they want or what their kids want for Christmas.

I honestly miss this type of shopping. It used to make it so much easier than running around to multiple stores. As a teenager it gave us a social place to meet friends also bc cell phones were not something every kid had at 10 years old. I grew up here and the mall was always small but yes it had a huge fountain under the glass roof when you first came in past all the food spots. That mall had many stores for a long time and it's sad now. It was redone in the early 00s. There was an arcade near JCP back in the day and it was there many years and was a hotspot for kid's in that area, a blockbuster music, kb toys, JCP had the catolog counter too and that was a big thing back then, many others. K-mart was in middle past center with jewelry stores that was the first big store to go out. The childhood memories that have now been outsourced by amazon and other online shopping make it harder and harder for these "hallway malls" and for kids to actually have normal teenage socialization and experience the same type of peer relationships we were able to. Being dropped off at the mall and movie theater to hangout with your friends for hours was the highlight of middle and early hs years. Shopping with your parents for school clothes and prom dresses, great memories that these hallway malls will always hold for many.

Growing up in the 90s, it was the place to go for my brother and I. We used to go to Aladdin’s Castle (the Arcade) to play hits like NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat I and II, Street Fighter II, Killer Instinct, Revolution X, T2 - The Arcade Game, etc. We would also frequent KB Toys, Foot Locker, Foot Action, Waldenbooks and some sports card store. There was once a fountain in front of the mall and a Chick-Fil-A near an entrance. This mall is a shell of its former glory.

Gosh, won't lie this mall still holds a special place. Still miss the micheals they had as the art supplies were interesting! It sucks how much it now looks like its borderline abandoned. Glad to see there are videos of walk throughs through some of these malls! Think what also is the downfall of some of these malls are the lack of good stores. Like the Jacksonville mall always seems to be crowded and has a good amount of great stores!

I will never be a fan of carpet malls. I live in Europe and the idea of carpet as pavement in a mall is so strange.

@SilverXTikal

I think the main part of it is to lower the echo effect in a large space. If the carpet is like it is in a movie theatre and school then I see no problem. Easy to clean instead of the typical house carpet. Plus if the carpet gets messed up past repair they can just peel that tile of carpet and replace it with a new one. Though as I’ve done it myself. Hope the guy who glued that carpet tile down didn’t go crazy with that glue. And the people replacing it scrape off the old before laying down the new so that it’s flat and not bumpy

Opened in 1979 with main anchors JC Penney, Belk, and K Mart with additional stores like Roses and on the plaza side anchored a Winn Dixie grocery store. Located at the intersection of Highways U.S. 17 and U.S. 70 in New Bern.

Did you pass through the area and not come to Murfreesboro? I think our Stones River Mall is interesting in that the inside is dying while JCPenney and Dillard's continue to do well. All of the small shops have moved to the Belk anchored outdoor The Avenue. The small shops there do well there but the Belk is pathetic.

“Hull apologist” 😂 Got me! I align my positive view on Hull specifically to the needs of the communities they are located in… Orangeburg and Sumter specifically. The level of displeasured energy this one is pulling out of you is making it a good one! 😂 Do trolls seriously say you don’t do research on your vids? I definitely feel you not only do a lot of research but also present it in a very interesting manner. The trolls are not worth giving them an ounce of thought. Looking forward to the malls from your trip to areas we rarely see on any channels.

The outside of this mall is beautiful. I like it. It's too bad that they have to keep the inside looking the same, instead of for example, incorporating the entrance brick architecture on the inside of the mall as well. It would make an ounce of a difference. Maybe they should start with that. Just a random thought.

It refers to the owner, Hull. They have a reputation for buying struggling malls and renovating them into this bland template. Speaking specifically for the New Bern Mall, even the Hull renovation is an upgrade from what it was before. Dark, dank, and depressing.

My goodness, Hull malls suck. They are just so ugly. Also, I won't lie the skylights don't bother me and the Belk entrance architecture is just ok, but that's it. Thanks for mentioning that a fountain used to be there. I'm so happy a fountain is no longer there. A mall this ugly doesn't deserve a fountain in the first place.
