A Visit to South Hills Mall AND University Place (Feat. Southern Season) 

Just FYI, "Kerr" Drug is pronounced as "car". I was actually hoping just the other day that you would visit the old University Mall in Chapel Hill. The next time you're in the Raleigh area you should swing by North Hills on Six Forks Rd. It used to be the location of North Hills Mall, which I believe was the first indoor shopping mall in Raleigh. It became a dead mall in the '80s-'90s thanks to competition from the nearby Crabtree Valley Mall and the owners demolished it (except for the JC Penny part which they either didn't own or couldn't afford to buy out the lease). They turned it into a very posh shopping center. It's a good example of what a dead mall can be turned into.

Did you happen to find pictures or a blueprint of what the pre-2002 renovation? I vaguely remember it and anybody I talk to about it thinks I’m losing my mind (they don’t remember anything except the current state). University Place has been dying a long, agonizing death. With Southpoint Mall down the road with public transit, the college students would rather go there. Cary Towne Center, sadly, did not impact it as Southpoint effectively wiped out CTC at the same time. 😔. Shame with Southern Seasons, they had a good selection.

I grew up in South Hills mall . My mom had two stores there...Country Sonshine and Classy Lady Boutique the Roses left for 30 years and came back about 10 yrs ago

My Mom would go pay for her new Car tag every year and i would wait for her while watchiing the train set they had there it was fun

Classic Burlington Coat Factory sign there from before they just became known as just Burlington (with that heart shaped "B"). I think by the time I was able to visit my first one (in 2012) I think that one had the changed naming or maybe it was still that but instead of a standard typeface "B" as the first letter in "Burlington" it was that stylized one.

University Mall died when Dick Crum left town.

As a kid back in 1975 we used to go here. I remember Roses. We used to go dancing at disco depot. It was a teen club for 11 to 18 year olds. And we used to go see kids movies of the timer for $.50. Our parents just let us wander here all the time. Thank you for making this I really appreciate it.

And I thought the only Roses still open was in Smithfield.

There’s a University Mall near me too, ironically it’s name was also changed to University Place but it’s doing much better than this one is.

in all my years in cary I never knew about the south hills or university malls... I guess I don't get out enough, I'll have to check them both out while I can. I'm so glad I know about these now

That first mall is a slice of heaven. The second mall is not bad, it looks like they tried to modernize it but fell short.

I forgot we went to this mall on our trip until I was going thru my pictures. It was so small and so dead when we were there just 2 weeks ago, on Monday. The only place that was open and had customers was Chik-fil-a, although it was take out only. B&BW was open but no one was there, which was shocking. We did stop in and gave them some business though. I think we spent about 30 minutes there, including our time in B&BW. Some of the places appeared to just be closed because of covid but it was hard to tell, having never been there before. We really liked the decor. It's a shame this place has outlived it's time as a mall, but the community center option could work there depending on what decides to relocate. Thanks again for your videos. We really like having a "preview" to know what to look for.

South Hills has always been that weirdo timewarp mall on the inside. Moved out of the area back in 2017 but from what I remember all of the stuff there is pretty legit. Grand Asia Market is such a gem, it has a really great produce section. Its also got the DMV that everybody in the Cary/Apex/South Raleigh area renews their tags at.
