I can only imagine the incredible emotion Eileen feels while making this video - I come back to this one again and again. Absolutely 'haunting'.... and this no way diminishes the educational value - I'm sure it's no accident that she fills the dialogue with things like names of vegetables, family member names and a host of other rich vocabulary words and useful phrases. This one's a gem....and so is Eileen...

I can't thank you enough for everything you do, it really means a lot. About four years ago I stumbled across this video while trying to research how to study Chinese. I remember not being able to understand any of it so I clicked on your channel and found your HSK 1 series...after watching the first video I bought HSK 1-6 on Taobao. Sometime later, after watching many more videos of yours, I became a "supporter" on your website and have since downloaded just about every pdf you have on your site! I find your method of teaching much more interesting than the HSK series but I kept up with HSK studies over the past several years too. Anyway, it's really cool to see this video again. I haven't thought about it over the past four years but today I was able to understand the progress I've made with my own Chinese. I couldn't watch the video today due to being at work so I minimized the youtube screen and just listened to it. Not only did I listen to it but I understood every word of it. I don't think that would have been possible if I would not have found your channel four years ago. Once again, thank you for all you do...it means so much to so many of us.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! *Access the playback speed controls as follows:* *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the *lower right of the video's screen* and click on the *settings* icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the *upper right of the video's screen.* You will see *3 dots.* Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

If it was true more than ten years ago, but now this kind of village is disappearing. The reason for its disappearance is very clear. Young people have left the countryside to go to cities and towns. The urban rate in China is 64%. The rural population is only 36 percent. And the rural population is getting smaller and smaller. The reason for leaving is very simple. Young people are unwilling to be farmers. They work very hard and earn very little money. Relatively speaking, China's food and vegetables are very cheap. Moreover, because of the large population and the relatively small cultivated area per capita, ordinary people don't get much land. It's tiring to make money by farming, and it's less. Unlike in the United States, where farmers can grow on a large scale, farmers have a lot of money. It's easier to make money and learn more than going to town. And all aspects of urban facilities are more perfect This kind of village will only be inhabited by old people. Maybe this generation of young people can come back when they are old

The dialects are always amazing to hear. Sometimes the languages sound just close enough that I lean in and try to listen, then realize I don't understand a single word. We have mostly Canto and Mandarin speakers where I live, so to hear something new is always cool. My HSK's improved enough that I understand 80-90% of your words. :'D I'm so happy. I'm almost done with HSK3 and started HSK4. 7 months to get here, way more than I ever learned in the years I took school as a kid.

I used to live in a village quite similar to this. Last time I visited was when I was 13 and even then much had changed. A lot of the older housing were abandoned and they built a bunch of more modern looking houses as well as new roadways and stores within the village. I miss it and would love to go back again. I imagine it has changed quite drastically again.

This is very good! Most Mandarin videos are very slow with few words and phrases. I get a mixture of Cantonese and Mandarin but I chose to only learn Mandarin. Hopefully, my next trip to Guangdong I will be able to understand and communicate much better. Your village looks like it is transforming but at a slower pace. I like visiting the rural areas when we eat in a restaurant. My wife lived in a rural farm area when she was little and her life improved when her family moved to a city. Things can change quickly in China.

My wife is Chinese and I have been to China so many times, I remember the first time we went and stayed at a small village, when it was breakfast instead of going to the cupboard to get a box of corn flakes, we went up the mountain to pick grass, well that is what it seemed like to me came back it was washed and we ate it, no coffee or toast, but it was filling with the steam bread they had, certainly cheaper then my bacon and egg Mac muffin breakfast, and most probably a thousand times healthier.

There are many dialects in different parts of China. They don't understand each other. But in general, the Han region can read Chinese characters, because since Qin Shi Huang unified China more than 2,000 years ago, the unified Chinese characters. But speaking varies from region to region. Mandarin used to be a northern dialect. Usually, the dynasties that unified China chose a dialect as their official language. Previous dynasties with capitals in the south also chose southern dialects as their official language. But the characters are all Chinese. The unified writing of the First Emperor of Qin. But there is no uniform pronunciation. But to facilitate communication, any Chinese dynasty would promote the official language. But it's not mandatory

This relative poverty reminds me of the life of my grandparents in a French village. Since, the situation and the infrastructures improved. I hope it goes the same way in China, and I think it's an objective of the government. Working people should be able to live greatly through all the wealth they produce.
