With a over 30 million more men than women, how does China have "leftover women"? Women that many Chinese feel are too picky or don't meet certain standards and thus are "leftover"? And, are these women really rejects or have they deliberately chosen to remain single? Eileen goes to the streets to find out how ordinary people really feel about this unique Chinese phenomenon.
NOTE: These interviews were done in early December 2019, before the Coronavirus widely spread around China.

people(viewers) like street interviews but don't like to be interviewed doesn't matter that much the topics,you just want to hear average people opinions and not a politician or a journalist opinion who tends to be biased often something was a little off,2 girls were one said "let me talk" it was daylight when they were interviewed and at the end of video it was evening you can keep a person 5 minutes maximum 10 minutes to say his/her opinions but to keep them more than 30 minutes seems hostage situation

1. They are not leftover just unmarried. 2. It's probably that they haven't found their mr. right yet or that they just like being single. 3. They mostly feel like they want their daughters to have someone to rely on and by their side instead of handling everything alone. 4. A little bit of both but it's their own lives to decide. 5. They feel OK about it, because not everything in life has to involve being with a man. 6. Live as long as they are happy. 7. Yes and No it depends on the person themselves. 8. No it depends on if they want to get married. 9. Depends on if you want to get married you can always try later on in life, but if you really want to have kids than try before it's to late in life.

Eileen & her team are the best, her videos are a combo of really hip, hot topics with sightseeing and a personal touch and the trilingual subtitles guarantee learning results. She's the ONLY teacher I know who can assure 100% listening comprehension, even up to native level, over time BECAUSE English is kept at a minimum. Out of the 4 pillars of language learning, listening comprehension is always the hardest to really master. I'd like to liken it to the ability of playing an instrument by ear, which so few possess because it was never taught them properly. Thanks so much, Eileen.

This is a gold mine of good information about people speaking and words used, thanks. I think it has excellent value in that evokes emotion or comparison to one's own life and is easier to remember. At least the that's my theory. I'll remember some terms much more easily when I think of them in a rich context. The speakers are very communicative and the answers thorough. I like the word set as it relates to goals, emotions, expectations, feelings. Many abstract but very important ideas.

You can't compare to something that's been around for years affecting people around the world, coronavirus has been around for 2 months and doing damage for one month. Second, it's a new virus , we don't know how dangerous it is if it gets around the world like the flu. Dont underestimate something that's new and unknown.
@FlightDeckMagazin

@むく Totally wrong. The south china morning post wrote, 13 Million people get flu in USA and 10 000 people died. And Corona Virus only died 2.2 percent. This is such a bullshit and propaganda of the Chinese CCP. 1. If 2.2 percent of 13 Million people would be 273 000 people in the USA are dead. 2. The death rate in the USA was 0,0769 percent from flu. 3. The rate in China now experts calculate with more than 3 percent. 4. The doctor in Wuhan was 34 years old when he died. How can you think, old people die only? Try to use brain before spreading nonsense!

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! Access the playback speed controls as follows: *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Great topic and amazing video as always! For those who want to learn more I highly recommend "Leftover Women: the Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China" by Leta Hong Fischer, a book that interviews "leftover women" and highlights, among other things, the role the Chinese government plays in spreading these ideas as well, for fear of social instability caused by too many unmarried men. A fascinating read!

I’m not a native Chinese guy, I’m a Chinese-Canadian living in China. Am 24 so younger than pretty much everyone in this video (I assume). I agree the preference for boys over girls has been catastrophic on a wider demographic level, but from my experience merely befriending these “leftover women”, I don’t have much if anything positive to say about them because sooner or later they all turn out to have BIG personality flaws and other problems.

Great content! It is a good way for me to try and follow the conversation. But when I don't understand at all, I can still understand because of the translation! Maybe a small tip. Sometimes you ask a closed question. For example: 'What should be her ultimate goal in life?' at 29:54. You follow up with having babies/marry or persuit happiness. This way people are framed to choose 1 of the 2 options. While when you ask open ended questions. Often way more interesting and random answers come. Nevertheless I find Chinese people generally very open when you interview them. They go very indepth in their effort to answer your questions. In the West many people might not have this patience. Or even haven't thought about it that deeply. 太谢谢你了,你对我们真好!

@ 2AM and I thoroughly enjoyed those interviews. Such a wide ranging points of view. A few years back I ran into a phenomena called MGTOW, Men Going Their Own Way, here in North America. Many of the point's about the Left Over Women were brought up in the discussion of why men were not marrying. I'm too old now to really be MGTOW, as my "market value" has descended to rock bottom, but at the time, things were different. Yet I was still on the shelf. In some ways these women have placed themselves beyond reach of "normal" guys. When people said that the left over women had high standards, they didn't explain it very well. First off, yes they are materially and financially well off. But there also is the Social Status aspect. A woman who has achieved higher education, financial and career status, also has achieved a higher social status. A woman who has achieved high social status, won't marry below that status, even it the guy owns a small contracting business and makes good money. The pool of guy's in the west who will meet the women's standards has diminished over the past 20 years. Fewer men are taking higher education, while the Universities are full of women looking for the perfect career and hopefully their "MRS" degree. Then they go into the working world and it's the same. Mr Right, has to be at or above their level. But there again the pool of men is a dwindling resource. Interesting conversations. Subscribed, not for the language courses, just to learn more about China. Cheers

Your videos remain outstanding. Your format of teaching through dialogues about interesting and relevant topics has no match. My small issue is with the English translation which is critical for some learners (I am one). Sometimes I find small mistakes. For example shen you tihui I feel means she has a deep understanding. You translate tihui to mean resonates which I don’t think is the most precise word here.

'Left-over women' is a manufactured term used to disempower women who have not yet married, either out of choice or simply because they have not found a suitable or ideal partner. It is also a term that the rest of society can easily adopt to discriminate against those who have not conformed to 'social norms' by exerting societal pressure and perhaps a certain amount of unfair judgement on women have not yet married or who have divorced. It is a term that is conducive to the aims and interests of the existing patriarchy in China and both men and women on the mainland should reject it completely. - Great video by the way. Thanks Mandarin Corner. You are quite simply the best Chinese language learning source on the internet. There is no competition.

social norms are an important part of culture and society. they exist for a reason. many western countries are seeing a degradation of social values because people are straying from the social norms. we shouldn't be "empowering" single people and single parents. its not good for anybody. we should be holding on to the family bonds that strengthen society.

@@rokko_hates_japan I agree that social values are important, but single people don't necessarily ruin anything. For those who don't create their own family, there just needs to be a focus on growing together as a community. If you don't have blood relatives, then you should be socializing and helping your neighbors. Neighborly bonds and friendship bonds can be just as thick as familial bonds.

@@pasleighlaylay6502 Neighborly and friendship bonds are virtually never as thick as healthy family bonds, and single parents absolutely do ruin society -- children of single parents are more likely to commit crimes, more likely to depend on government support, more likely to divorce, die younger, and have all other kinds of negative outcomes.
@pasleighlaylay6502
@pasleighlaylay6502 3 года назад
@@AUniqueHandleName444 That's because you're fortunate enough to have never come from a broken family and later been blessed by the embrace of friends and neighbors. If non-familial bonds couldn't be thick, adoption could never result in happy endings. Many single parents come from bad living situations already, so single or not, their kids were in for a hard time.

These older women are absolutely beautiful, the guys over there need to get a check up from the neck up. I date Chinese women exclusively in my city in the USA and can say that the women have good values and qualities most American women do not have. Higher level of maturity and not all that drama that American women have
