A Walk in Wheeling West Virginia 

how lucky i was to have visited Wheeling in 1974, ended up staying and to have raised my family there till 1997. i am so so grateful.

I hate to say it but, you were right next to the courthouse lol. It was next to those two churches where you asked for directions. Great video!

Ogelbay Park is one of the best public parks in the United States and worthy of its own video.

Kaufmann sold women's clothing , dresses , wedding gowns . The first building on the left was Stone and Thomas .That store had 2 floors with an escalator and a tea room . My grandma would take me there for lunch when I was little .

I really like your natural enthusiasm and joy in discovery! 😄I'm especially glad to get this "in person" foot tour, because the only time I went through Wheeling was about 6 years ago when I made a mad dash across town on the x-way, with sleet and wind hitting the windshield in mid-winter. lol. I worked in that theatre since 1976. Kaufman's was a clothing store. Primarily women's but they sold suits and men's clothing also. I can tell you a lot but I would type for hours just on what happened in my lifetime. Right around the end of the gangster days. The mob was alive and well in Wheeling back in the day it was called little New York before my times.

Kaufmans was a department store. They had many large stores in the Pittsburgh area.

I was born and raised there. You haven't a clue of what was there or what happened to it. You need to have a long time resident walk with you. BTW, those are hills. Wheeling doesn't have mountains. Hahaha

It's unfortunate that you missed Independence Hall. It's a beautiful building and was West Virginia's original capitol building. Edit: Btw, the courthouse isn't very impressive. Lol

WOW things have changed, I went there in the 1970's to see the WWVA Jamboree at the Capitol Music Hall. Lots of businesses have been torn down. I stayed at the Downtowner Motor Lodge back then, it was one block from the Capitol Music Hall. Those were the good days

I don't mind walking down that main street hill. It's the walk back that's a bit of work out. I normally go across a block and walk back up Market because it's not nearly as steep of a grade it seems. Courthouse is on Chapline street, not Market, one more block east.

Kaufmans was a fine clothing store up until the 1990s.

My home city Next time u come to wheeling check out are center market area and the Colemans fish market and the casino in are beautiful city also oglebay resort? And wheeling park there’s lot that people don’t know bout wheeling till u experience it for your self u will be shocked are downtown use to be called lil New york back in the day it use to be so crowded downtown that u couldn’t even walk the streets before they took out all are stores from downtown moved them to mall area that’s what hurt are downtown but hopefully they will all come back again in the future wheeling use to be booming city my grandma said

Damn, I saw the Capitol Theater and I thought for sure you would have included the historic 10th Street suspension bridge right up the street. I once stayed in the hotel right next to it and couldn't get over how amazing that bridge was! Sad story, that town. You can tell it was once a very affluent and booming town/ city. Now it's literally a ghost town

Independence hall is the most historical building in Wheeling as far as Capitol cities and such. Wheeling used to be the Capitol and it was twice. Charleston is now. A lot of historic events happened in that hall pertaining to government and even the civil war.

The local government must have been trying to run that city in ground because they did a great job of it in every way you can think. Every decision made was the wrong one.

You were going the right way to the Courthouse this random person lied to you! If you would of hung a right you would have seen it.

I have to say, you are very optimistic, but the first thing that stands out is the cement lines in the middle of the street. Horrible! Never seen anything like that before. Talk about budget. You say it's "Beautiful" and I guess you gotta be there. Was that a gunshot @ 5:10? Hope not...Just looks so poor to me.

That town sucks now look at it in the 70s and 80s compared to now I guess like anywhere else crap
