This is a great video of Wheeling West Virginia . Col.Ebenezer Zane was my 5th Great Grandfather on my Father's Mother's side My Father was born in Martins ferry Ohio in 1910 His name was Griffith Zane Watkins . Rebecca Woods was his Mother . Zane Grey wrote his first book called "Betty Zane ' and was written about his Grandmother , who was the sister of Col. Ebenezer Zane . There was a large Statue of Betty Zane who was a heroine for Fort Henry as she literally ran gun powder to and from the fort . She had a pet bears d loved animals . The Woods played an important part there at the Fort as well .. The courthouse was burned down but not before we read a Will written by Col.Ebenezer Zane starting , if the courthouse was torn down that , the land would revert back to the natural heir's . We copied that will while we were there . We meaning my Father's sister , myself and my Mother . Dr Bandy and his family lived in Wheeling and they were well known in the area . This was a cousiñ of my Father . Col. Ebenezer Zane founded Wheeling in 1769 .
We left Wheeling many years ago. I remember what it used to be and it is now a shadow of its former self. When I was a kid growing up it was a vibrant place with what looked like prosperity every where. Now grass is growing where GC Murphy was located, wheeling steel is a memory, so much has left. I remember the days when there was so much pedestrian traffic down town that it was difficult to see the sidewalks.
This isa great video! Question, where did you get most of the photos in the trolley portion of this video? I recognized many that were displayed in my grandfather's garage right behind Jamison's at 41st and Wood! When he passed I was unable to attend any services or the estate auction and always wondered where they may have ended up or of there were more out there!
