Come along with me as we talk a walk along in a Historic section of Altoona, Pennsylvania. I actually stumbled upon this by accident and didn't realize the history that surrounds this particular road. So in this video we will take a wet and cold walk to show the buildings and other items and at the end there will be a little photo montage with some night shots. Enjoy

I was born & raised here in Altoona. I moved away for several years but returned back home. Thought it was a great place to raise my children. I am 70 yrs old now. All the parks & parking lots you came across were store buildings back in the day. Parking was limited along the streets or parking lots outside the "downtown" area, as it was called before. All your shopping was done in this area. There were no malls or shopping centers back then. Most families had only 1 car & the husband would take it to work each day. Shopping was done by the wife during the day while children were in school. Wives would ride the bus to & from the downtown area. They would shop till they couldn't carry anymore. It was a very busy & hectic area back then. The Mishler theater is a tour itself. Big name vaudeville acts were performed there. It has been beautifully restored to its original glory. Thanks for reminding me about the history of my home town. Sad thing though, you only did 11th Ave. Mischler Theater & other historical buildings were on 12th Ave. One block over.

I was born and raised in Altoona. I remember 11th Avenue when my mother and I would spend the day shopping. My father worked for Sears and his store was on 11th Avenue before it moved to the mall in the mid 1960s.

The Post office building at the beginning of the video on 11th Avenue was the original Logan House and has historical significance. Gables is to this day the most quaint and beautiful department store I have ever seen. McCory's was a five and dime store. Thanks for this post!

Great tour, it's amazing how one can come across such amazing things walking about in different places. Not too long ago, most of the store fronts on Main Street Rochester NY had the same mosaic tile floor entries and similar features found there. Sadly all but two are left due to rehabilitation and modernization. As stated, Altoona is on my list of places to visit. 👍✌️

Well, you definitely chose an interesting time of the year to tour Downtown, yet it's always a nice time, it's so cozy, I'm glad to see a larger channel give a small tour of the area and actually look into the history and architecture. If you couldn't tell we love our small businesses and murals lol, hopefully you've enjoyed it! Oh also, the facade with the sidewalk closed for construction has been that way for a few months now, I'm not sure what it will be but I'm quite excited to see when it's done, we've had a ton of restoration done in the area recently, if only some other parts of the city could see the same treatment. And I absolutely love the night pictures, downtown is always picturesque!

I just came across this. I still currently live in Altoona and this is a beautiful tour of downtown. I don't believe the clock tower beside the rail car near the end of you video still does this, but when it was newer, every hour there would be steam that poured out around the face of the clock. It was almost like the smoke you would see coming from the old steam trains. Also at night it would glower blue. It was amazing to look at. Over the years you didn't see it steam as much and I actually can't tell you the last time I have seen it.

Near the beginning, you walked past a small storefront called The Clay Cup. It's a coffee/tea/ceramic crafting shop that was opened a few years ago by a young couple who bought the abandoned building and set about restoring it. A few doors down you saw another beautiful storefront with the tiled entryway and Christmas displays. That too was abandoned up until a few years ago. Someone did a beautiful restoration job using original plans, etc. The Gables building that was referenced was actually the bigger building just past that one, it was a multi level department store , and I remember going there as a child with my grandparents and later in my early 20s. Don't know if you ever filmed the street just above (12th Avenue) where the cathedral and Mishler theater sits? Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. Have a great day!

HIi JP! Thanks for highlighting my hometown! Just some FYI... the empty spot in the downtown is where McCrory's stood. It was torn down several years ago. The lights in nets are actually a remembrance of a war memorial that once stood. They were very contoversial when first put up many years ago. The lights strung across the street are new this year. JJ Hadley is the pizza place on the corner with the murals. The street is blocked off in the summer for outdoor dining. Best pizza around. The church you referenced about being constructed is in the process of being torn down. :( The Cathedral is amazing inside... incredible architecture if you get a chance to come back - worth checking out. The red lights on railroad city brewing are an homage to the old PRR passenger coaches. Stop inside the Post Office too. Some amazing architecture inside. If you get a chance, check out the interior of the Mishler Theater - absolutely amazing! Thanks for the documentation!

I moved to Altoona, Pa. around 1961 it was booming and I do mean booming. Where you started was 5 blocks away where Altoona businesses really began. It went down about another 3 blocks from where you stopped. Then it swung up around to the right and businesses were wall to wall in that area. There were so many churches, bars and gas stations in this town it was unbeliveable. It was a hell-of- a -town. Now it's just a hell town. Wouldn't wish anyone to move here. I'm looking to get out of here before I die or get killed here.

@@_Johnspike_ one piece of advice I give to people is to film what interests you. Dont try to follow what others do or to jump on something popular. Every channel is different and some types of content do better than others depending on what the channel is known for putting out. If you start randomly putting out completely different content than what your channel is known for, it will throw off the algorithm. As long as you make videos about things you enjoy, than it will show on camera. Its always good to do it in a unique way, but dont over think it. Usually less is more. Hope that helps.

@@JPVideos81 yea i always try to do stuff that generally peak my interest and stuff that i have fun with.It will definitely show on camera if you are being forced to doing stuff that you just don’t find interesting ik im sure I throw the algorithm off with me and my daughter doing food videos lol but we enjoy them too i say say that to say i am trying to build it more on general exploring/historical/haunted/ and hiking with the mix of me and my daughter doing our food/vlogs.Thanks a bunch man you helped me out with your comment keep up the work and have a merry Christmas 🎄

The mural in Heritage Plaza is a post card of 11th Ave on July 4th 1876 (the centennial) hens all the flags. It is being held up in the interior of the Altoona post office to the left of the hand. The Gables department store in the mural is the oldest part of the solid brick building diagonal from the plaza across 11th Ave. The brick in that building is just a curtain wall with the original facade still underneath. Some hope to restore it to the original facade but the condition of the original isn't known well enough to make an accurate cost estimate and no one wants to underwrite a project that could easily balloon out of control.

Thanks for show casing our town. Unfortunately back in the 70s many beautiful buildings with an abundance of architectural detailing were razed in an effort to " modernize the city"..
