100% agree about the paint finish. In fact, it's a topic I brought up at our model club meeting 2 days ago, and pointed out examples at a local IPMS show yesterday, and proved my point today at a 1:1 scale classic car show. The finish should be smooth of course, free of orange peel, but the hyper-gloss finish that wins golds at model car shows doesn't exist in real life on production cars pre-1980. And even if you are replicating a car with an amazing custom paint job, in 1/24 scale it shouldn't shine as much due to scale effect. You may find that at IPMS shows there is more of a focus on historical accuracy and build quality rather than quantity of modifications and shininess of paint.

That's what Howard told me too. He said that IPMS may focus more on accuracy rather than shine. Thanks

Looks like an interesting treatment you're giving this one. I particularly like the "travel trunk" on the back; reminds me of one my parents had for many years.

I agree Matt. Judging should be more on accuracy than shine. I usually run talcum powder onto my tires to lessen the shine and give them a more rubber look. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week.

Hi Matt, great progress. You know if you wanted you could probably use the trunk and luggage rack from the AMT 1928 Lincoln touring. I know you have one or two in your stash, but if you need one I have an extra. Just let me know.

After you clean the tires try using the tamiya rubber black. It's worked for me for such applications. Good luck.

Try Testors dullcoat on the tires. It works on newer tires, like from the 80's, it gives a real nice finish.

It isn't the wood inner structure that caused roofs on '30's cars to need the center hole covered in vinyl, Matthew. Metal stamping tooling (and related assembly methods) to manufacture all-steel bodies had not advanced to the point where the body could be all-steel yet. Even Cadillacs in the '30's required that hole filler in the center of their roof. I want to get a Model A kit (or two) so bad, and I'll use a green color for the body just like you're doing on this one.

I agree with your comments- unfortunately judges look for a super Shiney finish and since I finish with Pledge- I'll never live up to their standards ( I don't see the cars from the 50's and 60's with super shiny paint jobs anyhow so I feel comfortable with Pledge-at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it )

I always pronounced Citroen as "sit-ren", but a check on Wiki confirms it is properly "sit-trow-en", though with the typical "mouth-full-of-marbles" French accent. Okay, I stand corrected. 😊

One category seldom seen in judging, Realistic appearance. Younger modelers putting seven coats of clear on 70's competition cars have no idea how far from actual appearance they have gone. Repairs to funny car bodies were done on the fly to make the next match race. Can Am cars were constantly adding aero trim in a weekend. Any spray can available was used to touch up the new bits.

I believe mills are used to measure the thickness of a coat of paint. I have the same problem with dullcote and semi gloss. But if you buy it in jars, you can blend the differant paints. I see the interior door panels look like you used black panel liner on them. Did you know tamiya makes brown and gray panel liners? Looks good so far! Love the trunk! I love the old amt 32 fords. I'm trying to build a 32 Ford sport roadster with dual side spare tires. I would love to have a trunk to put on the back. You can't get the dual side mount spare fenders anymore. It would be great if somebody would print them!

I've never took the 40 hour, but had to take DOT49 and IATA DG training...no longer doing that stuff. The Model A is looking good.

You need to spray the tires with an acrylic matte finish with your airbrush. The rattle can formulas enamels and lacquers are incompatible with the tire material.Vallejo should work.

Have you watched Mark Batson’s review of the most recent contest he went to? While the topic of paint finish wasn’t specifically addressed, I wonder how much it factors into the rules used in that contest? I completely agree though that the majority of the models I see are unrealistically glossy. Yours is looking fantastic! Peace and love.

'Mil' is a unit of measurement...1000th of an inch. Your '30 Ford is coming along great!!! I'm soooo glad you have voiced my biggest concern about this hobby!! I was gonna make this same comment on another YT channel video but decided against it. The era and style of vehicles I try to represent had poor paint jobs back in their day compared to today's vehicles. Even the customs weren't as 'polished' as most folks think. In general...the judging at model shows appears to put an extraordinarily high value on 'mirror shine' which in my opinion does not truly represent the majority of 1:1 vehicles...unless you're replicating a SEMA winner.

Matthew, those Reid transmissions look more like a GM 4L60E, the kind of giveaway is the shift solenoids on the right side just above the pan. Since there are four of them I would think three forward gears with a reverse the confusing thing is the case that resembles a Powerglide, but it shares the same appearing Super Case that supposedly is "unbreakable" but I've never seen anything that a serious racer couldn't break if they worked hard enough. And an F.I.Y.A. for Ruthie, the roll, cages on those Porsche's were made of welded aluminum (I know sounds stupid doesn't it?) tubing so a good Alclad Aluminum Plate or Aircraft Aluminum would look correct. Good job on both builds, but Ruthie better get back on that Corvette before you snag it.

I like that green paint. Looks great for that car. It is a shame that judging are so focused on paint. Should be the overall quality of the build. As for the matte clear on the tires, I have found that lightly scuffing the surface and then coating with DuraClear Matte works very well. The DuraClear is a urethane and sticks well.

Seriously, on the majority of show builds that I've seen, the paint jobs are so over-the-top shiny that they make the models look very toy-like, rather than replicas of real 1:1 cars. It's an issue I've always wrestled with, and I've purposely toned-down the shine to a more realistic level on all my builds.
