I have been thinking about making the switch from Sony to Fuji for photo. Instead of impulse buying, I rented the xt5 and put it up against my beloved Sony a7iv. Here are my thoughts on the xt5 and how it compares to my Sony a7iv.
i've owned many fuji (xt2, xh1, x100f, xt3, xt4, xh2s) cameras and many sony's too (a7s2, a7s3, a73, a7r4) and i fully agree with you. there is a noticable difference between the two in terms of the raw files and how far they can be pushed. Also, like you said, with the AF system. i'm left scratching my head with how some reviewers make videos and act all impressed and rave about how great the fuji AF is and how its just one small step behind sony. Even fuji's latest cameras are to me obviously behind on sony when it comes to AF. and i'm comparing it to my a7r4, a camera that is several years old already. all that being said, i always reach for my fuji cameras. my a7r4 has been collecting dust and i'm probably selling it soon. i just prefer shooting with fuji, frustrating as its Af can be.
I just saw your Twitter post and came here to watch this video before seeing your new video and I absolutely loved this video so thank you for making it and it honestly honestly cleared up a lot of thoughts for me as well
There was host something off about the xt5. I order the Sony a7cii. Now that I have the xt50 I’m starting to feel how you were about the 40MP. It takes away from the Fuji magic.
@@kuroexmachina 5:04 he does talk about shutter speed and the original comment was correct you can use the front dial for other shutter like 1/50 if you cannot get the correct shutter from the top dial
You're right; The Fuji raw (X-Trans sensor) files are not properly processed by Adobe products. The autofocus is also a subject of much concern. It has not kept up with the competition. The flagship X-H2s (not the X-H2) has a stacked sensor and offers much better speed, buffer, and autofocus. If you haven't, consider trying that one. The color science matters if you shoot straight to JPeg, like many Fujifilm users. Otherwise, you can edit photos from any camera to (try to) get what you want. I chose Fujifilm because I liked having a physical ISO dial, along with the aperture ring, and shutter dial. At the time, I felt the user experience was important because it meant I would go out and photograph more often. I get around the smaller sensor size and X-Trans processing issues by using DXO Photolab on the RAW and then exporting it to Topaz AI to sharpen and enlarge. Then, I export a TIFF to Photoshop because unlike most of the Fujifilm community, I love photo editing! I think about switching to Sony or Canon because of the autofocus issues, but I have just enough luck with it to keep me using the camera. I've shot with an a7IV, in a studio setting, but I didn't feel the way I did, for example, when I shot with a Hasselblad X2D II (which I haven't gotten off my mind for 5 years). The a7IV didn't strike me as inspiring.(!) (Can you believe that!? It sounds like it should not make sense, but that was the way it felt.) Oh, and the Sony app for camera control is also light-years better than Fuji's. That's another sore spot.
I really want to thank you for this video. I'm still a learning photographer and do mainly portraits, street and circuit-events (race cars). The fuji sensor performs so close to the sony (when not pixel peeping) even though it's not full frame that i was gonna look past that. What drew me most to the fuji was the vehicle tracking function and the fps (15 on fuji and 10 on the sony.) So it looked great to me to use at the race track. But damn you're the first reviewer talking about the buffer. Imagine if i shot a passing car (average needed 20 shots/car) and then it bricks and i miss the next car. That's a definitve dealbreaker. Thank you so much for your insight and the clear way you share your personal experience rather than just rambling about specs and numbers. Really appreciate it 🙏
Nice video, man. I'm so glad you mentioned the buffer! As a wedding photographer, I keep running into this and have been trying to find answers for switching from Fuji to Sony. But I have to point out: The X-T5 does have the ability to switch to all video settings, just like the Sony. It takes some set-up in the menus, however. You can basically program it to ignore the main dials and switch to the wheels. From there, you can choose things like 1/50 shutter and have it store those video settings. Then, switching from stills to video completely changes the settings and operation of the camera. No further tweaking is needed!
For me - I get around using the dials for video by configuring it so you use the top dials for photography and the front and back dials for video. Then you can also have 7 custom settings each for video and photography. If you get your button layout set up properly, it is easy to switch between them.
I’m a hobbyist who shoots with Canon and Leica film cameras, and a Fujifilm X-T5 digital camera. The issues you bring up are great points of contention because it really goes to force Fujifilm to ask itself, who is the X-T5 for? Professionals? If so, what kind of professional? I personally don’t like shooting a bursts like you do because I prefer a slower pace but a camera at this range should be able to adapt to your needs too if it wants to be competitive. My Leica MP-240 is much worse than the X-T5 but again, I prefer a slower workflow so that shortcoming doesn’t affect me as much as someone who prefers to capture as many images as possible. I’m certainly considering the Sony camera you are using because it seems like a fun one to use. Great video!
I agree with you 100% on the Fuji colors not being reproducible from the raw!!. Another thing I’ve noticed is that the autofocus on my Fuji (x-s10) misses focus a lot. I often have to switch to single point autofocus and slow down my shooting to nail shots, good for stills, but terrible for sports. I’m making the switch from Fuji to Sony soon!
5:06 The rear dials micro adjust the shutter speed. This is for both stills and movies. At 24 fps, your rear dial can set the s.s. to 40, 48, 50, 60, 80, 96, 100, and 120
The Fuji will remember your settings when switching from photos to videos, but your dials have to be set to T if I remember correctly, which allows you to control that (shutter speed for example) with the wheel on the back. When I had my X-T4, I never used the dials on top, honestly it ended up becoming gimmicky to me and I prefer my A7IV ergos like you. The biggest thing for me though is ease of use. With my XT4, I felt like I had to learn to work around its many limitations especially with AF in video. When I would go on vacation, I’d hand it to my wife and the AF just wouldn’t work great sometimes, videos wouldn’t focus or would hunt, etc. when I shot music videos, I felt like I had to work extra hard to keep things in focus, use focus limiters or just manual focus, etc. if a photo isn’t exposed great with the Fuji, it can be hard or impossible to recover the files sometimes. With the Sony, leave the AF on wide and it will pretty much always focus. My wife had a much better success rate using it without ever even having used it on our last vacation. Touch a person or object and it tracks it flawlessly, photo or video. Photo a little blown out? Shadows too low? It’s amazing to me how much more flexible the Sony files are. All in all both systems are great, but if I only had to have ONE camera, I want the one I can trust most. I would love to get another Fuji though as a B cam for fun, because I do miss it sometimes 😂
Got me the Sony A7R5 few months ago and love it so much. I bought the Sony A7CR the next week as a backup. The Auto Focus on these camera's are Amazing. The raw color is still not great but you have 61 megapixels. Unless Fuji comes out with a fullframe mirrorless thats in a 2500 to 4200 price range. I am sticking with my sonys.
Thanks for your review, I'm a Sony shooter from 5 years ( Previously Canon for 12 years).. I started to shoot with Fuji last year just for fun ( X-Pro3), I love the colors and the dynamic range, also I love the design, they are sexy as you said. Personally I care a lot about AF and coming from Sony (A7IV) I see the difference..and for me it's huge... but a the same time I wouldn't give up on Fuji just because of this.. The shoot experience is completely difference, also I love the Film Simulations, I wish Fuji had ff gears with both technologies from this two brands, that would be my final choice!!
i just went from Fuji to sony and i agree with a lot you just said. Fuji's got the color! Sony has the files! menu wise, I'm still more used to fuji. And yes. Fuji is miles off in the AF department.
people are hating in the comments but this is a great video and great comparison. A lot of people are praising the Fuji, but if i had to keep fiddling with the settings to get that SS, kind of makes all the manual dials useless straight out of the box. keep it up
Honestly they are kinda useless at times. They just look cool but they present a very slow way of doing photography. I rarely even use them on my x100F. It’s always in aperture priority. A lot of the things I found were never mentioned by other RU-vidrs. I’m assuming they were given the cameras or paid to say good things only.
you have to set your shutter o (say front dial) and the options go up in smaller incrememnts. At least they do for me. Might have to add one further setting but it does exist
Excellent review! I have an X-T5 and love it for still shots and playing with the film sims. I absolutely love the retro feel and look; it’s sexy as hell, like you said. It really is a great camera for general photography, BUT,for anything serious and moving at any speed, I use my Canon R6 Mk II. I feel the same way about it that you do about your Sony. The AF on the R62 is unbelievable and is light years ahead of my X-T5 and X100VI. I use the Fujis for more static subjects and they do quite well with that but my R62 is in a different league with regard to AF tracking, accuracy, and speed, as well as low light performance and on top of that, I really like Canon colors as much as I like Fuji colors. I enjoy both systems for different reasons.
When you're shooting video, the front dial on the camera is used as the second option for changing the shutter speed, so it can change to different SS without go into setting
the autofocus on the Fujifilm just makes me want to launch it at the nearest person sometimes. I'm on xt30 and xt5 might be slightly better. But I've missed so many shots with honestly how terrible it is
@@truebro77 in your experience re the x100vi auto focus just slow or doesn’t work at all. I’m considering the x100vi or xt30 / xt30ii / XT5 Any additional thoughts, feedback, or recommendations for someone like myself that wants to get back into photography at age 65. I also like the idea of the film profiles you can choose from and just want to up my game from my iPhone and not really interested in doing walking around with big lenses and likely won’t be doing doing much editing.
@@jimgunderson6439 What type of photography do you want to do? Will you be using telephoto lenses a lot? If so, you should also consider M43. I use both Fuji and Olympus and both are very good for what you want. The AF on Fuji isn't the best for sure, bit depending on what you'll be doing it can also be OK.
@@truebro77 thanks for the feedback!!! I’ll keep checking with some XT5 Facebook groups to see if they can shed any more light. Do you know anything about the x100-VI Autofocus by any chance? You would think this could or would be fixed with some firmware updates and out this to rest…Wouldn’t you?
Great video and appreciate your thoughts. I don't even own a sony and I thought the comparisons and thoughts were completely fair. Keep up the great work!
I have the xt5 and the Sony a7IV. Sony for work. Fuji for my creative stuff. Also a quartz cp filter and fixing your white balance helps me shooting. My Sony files are looking similar to Fuji due to it
A CP filter is definitely clutch and WB helps a ton for sure. I don’t think the Fuji and Sony colors are that far off honestly. The FL creative look looks very similar to classic neg to me.
This is my ideal setup. Granted I kind of just want a really old Fuji for fun, with a manual lens that way it’s NOTHING like my A7IV so I don’t expect it to be 😂
I've had many Fujifilm cameras over the years...including the XT3 and X100v. I sold everything and moved to Sony, which I love. But like you, I miss the 'feeling' of shooting with the Fuji and also the SOOC colors. So now I have the xt100vi and XT5 on order...but still not sure which one to go with. Love both of them!
You don’t buy Fuji for any fast pace subject. Their 2500 usd camera with stacked sensor and bad af is their biggest mistake so far. You buy it for colors and retro shooting feel.
Dude, so much user error. Get to know your Fuji. 🤣 Turn the optimized movie setting on for a better video shooting experience. The shutter speed dial shows full stops, but you can go up or down two thirds using the rear dial. At 24fps you want your shutter at 1/48 and Fuji supports it.
@@LexanderMiller I don’t have to like it because you guys do and I don’t even have to use it the same way. This was my opinion. I’ve never said you have to agree
@@one901 no one is saying you have to like it my guy, we’re just pointing out that the reasons you gave in your video aren’t actual issues. Brother I just sold ALL of my fujifilm gear to switch to Sony. You rented the camera, and that didn’t give you time to understand the ins and outs. That’s fine, but for some reason you’re defensive when people point out you got some things wrong.
You are comparing two different systems. Obviously the XT5 is inferior. I have one and I only use it for travel or quick photos. For professional work I would the XH2s, its more inline with the Sonys
Maybe you should have studied the x-t5 more. You can easily set the SS to anything you want i n.10th increments it you want plus there are two different settings for still and movie which switch over when ever you flick into movie mode, Light room hates fuji raw files.Go captture one. There is more but whats the point if you didn't even take the time to go into the system correctly.
4:50 Why must you change everything? If your exposure settings are ok for photo, they must be ok for video and visa-versa. At least this is what I want from camera, and I hate my Sony for not being able to shoot photo in video mode. Also, about 1/50 - and that's absolutly fine to shoot at 1/60 at 24-25 fps. Mostly my camera is setup for video, so it is in 1/60 all the time. Need to take picture - just take it. Done. I forgot to say - nice video from you! Thank you! P.S. X-T5 is not good for video anyway, as X-t3, X-t4 were.
Depends on how you’re shooting. My photo settings are nothing like my video settings. Shooting 24fps the shutter needs to be at 1/48 or 1/50 to maintain the correct shutter angle. Shooting at 1/60 isn’t ideal.
Fuji raw has some magic baked in , that's why sometimes its hard to get clear look as Sony could . Sony is so flat looking image , no soul there , just digital ... I have both , fun to work with Fuji , but when i need 100% result I gotta use Sony for that
First all you cannot compare the xt5 against the a74, their different camera style. Xt5 is a photography camera. The xh2s will fill all your needs with video and buffers. Also I seed you are using a slow SD card, Fuji’s files are bigger than the Sony’s, at least you need a v90 card. I used to own the a74 and switched to fuji and never going back to Sonys crappie colors
Use Movie Optimized mode for video and set your settings with the command dials like any other camera. When you switch to movie mode, it’ll ignore the dials and use your previous video settings. You can also set shutter speed to 1/48 with the command dials. I did a video about this very thing. Hope it helps.
