Big fan of skimming at times. As long as you learn something new, it's never time wasted

I completely agree!

The lighting is very chiaroscuro now! A whole level of drama added to your Booktube channel. Caravaggio was the master artist of filling his canvas with that kind of light and drama.

I was thinking Caravaggio too. 😂

Oh, that’s really interesting! Haha, well I wish I could say it is a mark of creative genius…. But I really just got lucky with it I’m afraid. 😂

Moby Dick has occupied my bookshelf for a number of years now. I’ll have to give it a try. I’m very impressed you have read it twice! Love the channel Micah, excellent job and the lighting looks great.

Thanks so much, Kermit! I really appreciate that. I’m glad to hear that the lighting looks good.

I am reading The Irish Assassins by Julie Kavanagh. It is about the time of the Troubles and it's again as fast-paced by your read on Britain. Would recommend. I recently bought a Kobo Libra because my Kindle was getting very laggy and I could not enjoy the reading experience at all. And boy was the change needed! Already finished two books and it's a great feeling. This is an Oasis but better! I'm loving my reading life currently.

So happy to hear you are loving your reading life with the Kobo Libra! I haven't tried one before, but I have heard a lot of really good things about it. The Irish Assassins sounds like something I'd really like - thank you for letting me know! I'll add that to my TBR.

The Age of Decadence The entire premise is in the title. The everyday man could never come near to affording Decadence.

That is very true!

Very interesting! So your verdict on "The Age of Decadence" is basically that it's the kind of thing people who never read nonfiction (especially history) think ALL nonfiction is like? Long, fact-dense, and more or less inert?
@Yesica1993
@Yesica1993 5 месяцев назад
I read a lot of nonfiction, and it often has been this way. I assumed "dry" facts and figures was just the norm. Maybe I've been missing out on some good stuff all these years and just didn't realize it? Darn, nobody tells me anything! I do remember reading, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer. It was better than a novel. I couldn't put it down. I undertook it as the usual, "I should read this", project/chore. I was so pleasantly surprised! I mean, if there's more nonfiction/history like that, I'd be thrilled.

What a shame about The Age of Decadence but I completely understand what you mean about not being engaged Micah and how, for an 800 page book, that can be tough. I read an 800 page history of India called India After Ghandi by Ramachandra Guha last year and there was so much detail but it was such an engaging read.

It really was a shame! I think I am going to keep it, and maybe give it another go in a while. There is certainly a difference between the reading experience of an engaging 800 pages, and a dull 800. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your takes on these books. I read Moby Dick my freshman year in high school to be smart. It is now on my reread list. Also, I just bought the Fraser book and I am going to read that soon. I am going to England in April and I am trying to read as much as I can in that subject. (There is a lot so "Decadence" will probably not be on my list.)

I hope you have a wonderful trip in April! That is so exciting! I definitely think the Fraser book would be your best companion! I’m really enjoying it still.

I’m reading The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology by Simon Winchester which started off poor for me but got better as the narrative kicked in. I’m on the hunt now for more 19th century British history that isn’t focused on the monarchy or the military

Wow, if you can read Moby Dick twice, I can read it at least once! LOL. Oh, that book. I will conquer it one day. What is the ISBN on your edition? I am not finding it. I usually don't pay much attention to cover designs. But that one is gorgeous. If I am going to torment myself by finally getting through this book, I might as well have one that is pretty to look at. ;)

Still have my eye on Heffer. And now Fraser. But not any time soon. Just yawned, so maybe I should give up on reading for the night. Nah...

I’m still reading the Fraser and LOVING it! It’d highly recommend it. It’ll be another one to make you read late into the night.

hi Micah! Totally off-hand question, but i know you know ALOT about e-readers. I’ve never owned one and hadn’t thought about it until I read a couple e-ARCS from Net Galley (which I’m back into a little) and found it a real pain on my iPad. I’m thinking about a Kobo Libra 2..I don’t know if there’s a newer version. But do you know if the Kobo can link to one’s library system in the US? Thanks in advance for your help! Also, please remind me if you like the Kobo. Thanks for your help, Micah!

Hi, Renee! Firstly, I wanted to apologize for the delay in responding to your comment! I have personally never read on a Kobo, however, those I know who own the Libra model all enjoy it and say it's a fantastic e-reader, so I think that would be a wonderful choice. From what I understand, and have seen, is that the Kobo should be linkable to apps like Libby or Hoopla to connect to your local library's digital lending collection. (For me, I use a Kindle Paperwhite, and I can just send books from my library using the Libby app straight to my device and they return automatically on their due dates which is a great feature.) I hope that helps! I hope you really enjoy the Kobo Libra if you decide to get one!

@@MicahCummins Micah, thanks. No worries! I’ve been on quite a journey with the e readers. I got the Kobo and couldn’t figure it out. It’s tricky. I got the $99 Kindle and took it on my ice climbing trip and it was good to have. But it’s not really fun to read on, so I returned it after the trip!!

Never understand how people can rate books - much less count them as read on Storygraph or GR - when they've skimmed so much of the text. Skimming, simply put, isn't reading.
@MicahCummins
@MicahCummins 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment! I will say I did struggle with that dichotomy for awhile. Ultimately I decided that since I fully read more than half the text that I would go ahead and mark it down on my list. But I do respect your views.
