My favourite Clint Eastwood movie. Minimalistic, rudimentary, a psychological cowboy film, almost outwardly and sci-fi.

Completely second those descriptives ... and very interesting to think about it fitting the sci-fi genre, didn't come to mind, but now that it's mentioned, it does have somewhat that quality

Clint Eastwood admitted, I believe later, that this “man with no name” was in fact an avenging spirit. This theme was again used by him in “Pale Rider”.

This movie always reminds me of some of the better Stephen King stories. That ever increasing sense of dread, pressure and anticipation. You KNOW at some point that all hell is gonna break loose and you’re just clenched up waiting lol. Great movie.

This is my favorite Clint Eastwood western. I find it unique among westerns. This was also the second film directed by Eastwood. Another Eastwood western that is similar to High Plains Drifter is Pale Rider though IMO not as dark as this film.

"Be careful. You're a man who makes people afraid, and that's dangerous." "It's what people know about themselves inside that makes 'em afraid." Fun Fact: One of the headstones in the graveyard bears the name "Sergio Leone" as a tribute. Legendary Director Fact: This movie came in under budget and two days ahead of schedule. Clint Eastwood is famous for being an extremely efficient director. Location Location Fact: Universal Pictures wanted this movie to be shot on the studio lot. Instead, Clint Eastwood had a whole town built in the desert near Mono Lake in the California Sierras. Many of the buildings were complete and three-dimensional, so that interiors could be shot on-location.
@latenightswithsammy
@latenightswithsammy Год назад
Awesome exchange of lines! And that was awesome of him to give Sergio Leone that tribute 😊 I've heard so much about him being notorious for one take shots ... and surprisingly, how well they perform! We'd never know if it were the first, or fifteenth take .. so in terms of producing a film, he's really a studio's "preferred/safe" choice of Director ... I'd assume. And really appreciate that the set was all built and tactile ... really gives it another level of realism within it's distinctive atmosphere

When fans and critics talk about the great Westerns Clint directed, they always mention Unforgiven, Josey Wales and Pale Rider. But to me this is his best, a perfect blending of High Noon and A Fistful of Dollars . The only objectionable part is the rape scene.
@latenightswithsammy
@latenightswithsammy Год назад
Just about agree with this entire comment! Hopefully this film is resurfaces and gets some much deserved attention 😆
@jerryfick613
@jerryfick613 8 месяцев назад
It is objectionable in isolation, no argument. Bear with me, and please read the following carefully. In the context of this film, she used sex to manipulate and influence people. She clearly had an affair with Stacey, and it's implied she talked him and his crew into the conspiracy and murder of Marshall Duncan. Sex was her weapon, which she used against he Marshall, The vengeful spirit turned sex against her in its exaction of the town. Even in this, I think it is supposed to be objectionable. The drifter is an antihero, a dark spirit exacting revenge against a bunch of greedy cowards unwilling to face their deeds. Consider the story of Willy Wonka; each child represented a vice, and each vice was turned against them. In much the same way, each person who participated in the conspiracy paid out according to what they loved or how they participated in the theft and murder.
@Edward-dd9tf
@Edward-dd9tf 8 месяцев назад
@@jerryfick613 I see what you mean, but still, it would have been more palatable if it had been a seduction scene instead of a rape. It's like that scene in Goldfinger where Bond ends up on top of Pussy Galore in the hay. It's a turn off because it looks like he's forcing himself on her.

So I saw this movie when it was first released in 1973 (I was eight! What were my folks thinking? But I did love it even then.) Loved watching your commentary--regarding the town's guilt, people in NYC were unnerved by this flick because we still remembered the murder of Kitty Genovese (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Kitty_Genovese), and I'm not sure if that was part of the inspiration for that movie, but HPD screenwriter Ernest Tidyman also wrote the scripts for Shaft and The French Connection, so there's no way he didn't know about what was happening in NYC... Great work! Thanks!

The digital restoration kind of works against this one. I remember watching this on VHS with my dad in the 80s and you really couldn’t make out exactly who it was getting whipped to death, so you kinda wondered “was that Eastwood?” Eastwood even cast his stunt double in the part and had him shave off his beard to make it ambiguous.

Is he the avenging spirit or his avenging brother? Nobody in town recognizes him. Why does a ghost need food and companionship? His dream seems to put him in the actual fray or did he hear about it? At the end do we know his name as Jim Duncan or just Duncan? I think clint's stuntman played jim. Imagine if it is his brother...he survived a whole lot of near misses in getting killed.

When I watched the film for the first time. I had a funny thought. I have recently started to work as an Urbanist and an artist who goes for participatory approaches. When Clint Eastwood mobilises the entire town to follow his lead, with shared resources, and bring changes. That's an Urbanist's dream. Except Urbanist's don't prefer people cooperating with fear, but with understanding, to make their town a better place to live. But here of course, it was a big F U to the town. 😁

I love Clint in this movie, but sorry Sammy it's not a horror western ghost story. Clint's character is the brother of the marshall that was killed. The audience is led to believe its a ghost but it's not. This was confirmed by Clint Eastwood himself in an A&E biography where he stated that the Stranger was not the ghost of the marshall killed in the films opening but was the Marshall's brother. Clint Eastwood did play a character in a ghost western Supernatural story in Pale Rider
