A whole bunch of nothing: Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad

We'll be honest. We had 16 hours of footage that just...weren't it. Machining, complaining about the cold, starting and restarting equipment. Paperwork, grants, website headaches, a whole bunch of "nothing," that's really mission critical. Not much happened, we were tired, cold, and just not our best selves. Here's the best we could do with what we had. Promises of new videos getting passenger cars prepped, more work on the 5, and who knows what else coming soon.
We're a nonprofit organization and despite our irreverent tone, we are passionate about heritage rail preservation, economic development, and especially - Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. Check out more about our nonprofit at whim.org and support us on Patreon: / mtrainierrail
For MRSR merch, check out our website mtrainierrailroad.com - we've got some beautiful apparel - including some "Flat-Clapped 5" shirts, and a few pieces for the special foamiest foamers in your life.

I was always taught that quenching hardens not softens
@mtrainierrail

For steel yes... Copper, brass, bronze - heat to a dull red and then quench to soften.

Find out that your piece you just turned is .005 under when the sun comes out (if ever)?

Is there a specific reason as to why brass needs to be used in the operation of the drive train of the locomotive ?
@bov634
@bov634 8 месяцев назад
Brass is used as a bearing surface, it is softer then steel and therefore consumed before the steel.
@kh455

@@bov634 - So...with brass being used in the application to the drive train of the steam train, is there another substitute for brass that won't wear out so quickly?... is a better question.

If it ain't broke don't fix it, what your seeing is common place in operation. Some "modern" locomotives used lightweight rods with roller bearings as well as roller bearings on all axles (N&W 611, C&O 614). I don't know much about 70 but I would assume because it was built for low speed and rough track, roller bearings would be an unnecessary expense.

Brass is used in rotary friction areas (cranks, eccentrics, axle bearings, etc.) for a few reasons. Since it is a softer metal it will wear faster than then two pieces it’s between (usually steel) to protect the larger and more complex parts. Brass is also very resistant to galling, where two metals sliding against each other will microscopically weld chunks together. There have been other metals and alloys used, but brass is cheap, commonly available, easy to work by hand or machine, and more resistant to heat.
