Dreamworld have flipped the world on its head today, lets see what they did! Discord: / discord Patreon: / callumupton Twitch: / callum_upton Twitter: / callumbotdev Music: artist: Jupiter song: Lost Love Spotify: open.spotify.c...
This has only made the storyline far far more engaging IMO. I don't normally follow this channel, but the Dreamworld vids popped in my feed and I've been following them consistently. I have 0 interest in the game, I just originally came to watch good natured dunking on overly ambitious "indie devs".... And now we may be watching the actual development of some indie devs through their building of this game... Silly beginnings, but potentially good story in the long run
if they keep paying attention to detail i think this will be a decent game, if theyre extra smart theyll take the lessons they learned and make an even better game next time so they can make bank instead of scamming people.
If the game somehow manages to become THE shit they always talked about, I can at least say: I was there!...watching the videos, lol. But it is nice to see that they somehow respect your experience as a developer/development so they can fix bugs, introduce QoL improvements etc The fixed pop-ins also makes it much better to look at. If they can now find actual art designers, maybe, and replace their assets from the store, step by step, giving the game a more unified and also unique look, it may get to something.
Their scheme was even more sophisticated: They planned to release the shittiest attempt for a game whatsoever, so everything positive they achieve feels like a massive improvement and leads to players losing their mediocrity bar, which in turn allows to create the illusion of a super-high-quality game just because everyone's judgement is totally thrown off.
Am I... going to want to play DreamWorks one day?... what is going on. We are far from that, but I could see it being a thing far down the road. Also... Nightmare world? Update? Even a verbal update
it still looks worse than most student products who study this stuff, it's worth maybe, 50.000? so remove a few zero's from what they got and it starts to seem reasonable
You have been covering this far too long. This game is still no where near good. Is it much much better? 100% it is, but to praise it as being a great game for doing the bare minimum is just wrong. Beyond the art being all over the place, the animation, the interaction, the even most basic UX is lacking. If you saw this on steam you would immediately assume that it is some sort of asset flip or something. I am not saying you should praise the devs when they do good things, because you definitely should! But you have to keep in mind that the devs doing good and the game being good are not the same thing.
This literally looks like something pumped out of CORE games. Its a ''Roblox'' type platform by Epic games that allows you to create games really easily. If you go take a look, Dreamworld looks like a spitting image of what a kid could make on CORE in 1hour.... and it cost them 10million to make this??
@@shandromand1675 Well, feedback on quality is good. But when it's actually shaping the direction of their work that's like being a outside consultant :)
Tbh havent checked into dreamworld after the deaster of a release. I m shocked how it turned out. I think it is above expectations when you compare it to then. Looks like they have actual working MMO elements in it. Its still a very very early alpha version but you cant really say this is full scale scam anymore.
@@JoeB2490 oh because they spend 5 hours of really doing things (hitting the right boxes in the oiption menu in unreal engine 2?) nah to pay for this is still a big scam. they should have a group of people wich grows with each month/update that can play it for free and for debugging and design ideas(and on how to program a game) and when it is really starts to become a game. throw a early acces price on it. and when it is ready a full price(however much they want). it is a nice and very good idea they have now with a free copy to give away but still. people can make this shit in a couple of days alone. and free because unreal engine is free. and their idea wasnt that new either they copied elements from a couple games and basicly have a new version of Rust/the forest ect.. now in some weird world(the weird world isnt a bad idea i just dont like it and thats just my taste for others the world can and should be amazing when its finished)
I guess if you just use Unreal long enough you'll end up learning some things. Still, I don't think they have the expertice to do networking and meshes/assets that they'll need to make a functional MMO. The store can only get you so far.
The original stated goals in the kickstarter compared Dreamworld to games like Second life and Minecraft, not seamless online worlds like World of Warcraft.
So.. if this was an indie project or something alike, this might've been praised. But keeping in mind their history, and especially their claims and money they got from people, this is still barely anything interesting. I still firmly believe the only reason they're still doing this is because they don't want to get sued.
@@elpximso6771 EXACTLY! I have no idea why people are thinking this is good, this is still barely a couple of weeks work... Maybe it's the boiling frog again? because stuff was implemented slowly over weeks, people think there's been a lot of work done to it or something?
@@Vradica People are comparing this to other projects that are getting coverage (Earth 2, Chronicles of Ellyria, etc), and compared with those, Dreamworld seems like a dream come true. I assume that's where it's coming from.
Praising the developer when they do something right is good but in all honesty callum, this game has nothing special going for it. It's nice that they listen to you and try to change but come on man this is nothing but the bare minimum of a test built o.O
WTF is fun in this game? Btw so scamming people is actually ok if I’m give you a shitty game over month which is still bad? They work with scammed money. And they work poorly. Kickstarter I’m coming.
Said it on the last video and I'll say it again: The fine print when "buying" Dreamworld says you're only buying access to the alpha. Still a scam imo. You can have a couple hours of fun with any number of free games out there 🤷♂️
It might be a cool idea next update to do a side-by-side of the first demo to what they have now. They still have a looooooong way to go, but it's good to see how much has been done so far.
"Dreamworld is becomming something incredible" No. It becomes something much better than before, thanks to paid professional developers. But the Graphics still look absolutely shitty. And I have never heard about the rich lore and huge number of interesting quests in there.
@@barbaroi_9 How is implementing entirely new work onto what was originally a blank canvas 'polishing' exactly? Pretty stupid of you. Polishing a turd is when you KEEP the turd and try to pretty it up.
I would say that "this game is now slowly becoming something *incredible* " ...is still an absolute overstatement. this is never going to be "incredible". at best, it might turn out to be passably mediocre. but for anything else than that, they would actually need to have some interesting core idea, besides "basically MMO minecraft with (slightly) better graphics".
@@BenoHourglass they haven't managed to make an actual game yet, though. actual game implies actual mechanics. so far, they haven't exhibited even a theoretical ability, or interest, in making any. all they managed to do is make the few non-mechanics they have less broken compared to the initial "absolutely nonfunctional" state. calling dreamworld a game because it's an interactive piece of software is like calling dictionary a novel because it has words that you can read.
I still don’t see what’s worth praising. There is no “good” or particularly fun game at the end of this. At best, there will be a half asked, generic survival game which is boarder line fun for a few hours. With so many talented indie devs out there putting actual thought and uniqueness into their games, praise like this may has as much weight as praising a toddler for not shitting on the floor. Dreamworld is still a scam created to lure in over enthusiastic children, and making it actually playable won’t change that. I enjoyed laughing at the dreamworlds team sheer incompetence or a short time, although I don’t understand how them basically slowing learning how to add in very basic working features is something worth covering. I really enjoy your content calumn, although I think you should look at some other games instead.
Are you sure you aren't a frog in a pot right now getting used to the warm water? I'm all for a game improving but they stole money and promised stuff they will never deliver. The only exposure I have to the game are these videos and honestly they don't look that great, none of the game play in the video is anything that looks interesting, it's janky looking and really looks slapped together from different stuff. Plus you don't have guaranteed access to the full game in the fine print. I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy this for just an hour of fun, sorry Cal. I like your videos, though, I'll keep on watching what changed they make but...eh I dunno, it doesn't feel right to encourage folks to buy it in the current state.
I still say that saying that it's slowly becoming something "incredible" is quite a stretch. I mean, it's taken them 30 weeks to get ONE positive update that still only brings the game to a state where it's about halfway to an average early-access game for that genre. Just because it's improved compare to how it started doesn't mean it's anywhere close to being worth playing when there are so many better options out there, and pretty much every other game in the genre was way more fleshed out than Dreamworld currently is even in the earliest stages of early access. And you just know that if the studio doing all the work for them decides to leave again, all of this is going to come crashing down in seconds.
And it doesn't mean that the game will deliver what they promised. They seem to be able to deliver a functional game. Or at least are making an effort. But still, even if they manage to deliver something functional, I would not support this game. It is still a scam. All the fiasco before and a few months after the 'alpha' was released can never be redeemed. This is no No Man's Sky.
I don't know man, this seems very weird. Either you're getting a kickback or have a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome, giving effusive praise for things that should be bog-standard requirements. And, encouraging people to purchase this game and give money to these scam-artists? You've completely lost me.
Same. Feels like everyone's forgetting the gigantic mountain of lies that Dreamworld was funded off of. It's still a hodgepodge of Unity store assets in a bad survival/crafting game instead of a million+ player blend of genres where you can do anything.
@@Relocklabs You mean compared to a completed and released game? Why would you compare something in early development to a finished game? Do you compare a rough yet to be worked piece of stone to a finished sculpture?
@@7dayspking Because they're selling it. A sculptor is not going to be selling people a halfway-hewn sculpture, so there is no need for comparison there.
I completely disagree with your measurement for money spent to hours entertained. I wont make arguments about dreamworld as that's for the prospective buyers to decide. but, I disagree so much with the statement, and i spent way to much time writing this comment, proving this is a bad measurement of entertainment value. Callum Upton ~ "My measurement of fun to cost ratio is; say you earned $10/hour and game costs you 10 pound, if you can get an hours worth of fun out of it, you definitely got your money's worth." What? Even in a vacuum this is an insanely subpar money to entertainment value. If i work 4 weeks, 40 hours, at $10, that's $1600 a month. If i wanted to be entertained all waking minutes after work, that's another 4 weeks, 40 hours with an additional 32 hours. The end cost will be $2880 per month on entertainment alone, if you had to be entertained every waking moment, and without taking into consideration food, rent, or utilities. I'm not done, because how you worded this, suggests that entertainment cost should be parallel to your your wage. As your wage increases, so to should entertainment without any increase in the entertainment provided. This is obviously silly as wage increases would never change since any wage number increase would readjust into a net 0 gain given entertainment cost inflation. Luckily we don't live in a vacuum and we have other options and products to compare. Lets take AAA games. Normally AAA games are poor value for money! Shadow of Mordor took me 13 hours to complete and still gave reasons to play it after i beat it. Brand new, the game cost $50 without any sales, or furgle shopping. That's $3.85 per hour of entertainment. Skyrim LE full price of $60 and 400+ hours gives $0.15 per hours but you could change that value when calculating DLC prices. What about indies? Factorio, Mount&Blade:Warband, and Big pharama are my picks. Each ill say is $30 on release (Early access or full) because i'm lazy and i want fair pricing. Factorio with 175 hours so $0.17 per hour. Mount&blade:warband has 375 hours played, and at $30 is $0.08 per hour. Big pharma has 110 hours played, and at $30 would make $0.27. In conclusion, with a games industry with games which can entertain for hundreds of hours, it is extremely wasteful to expect to spend $10 per entertainment hour or $1 per 6 entertainment minutes. Highly polished, and over priced AAA games cost less per hour than $10 per entertainment hour. Small size, experimental, and gameloop focused indie games just flat show you might spend less than $0.10 per entertainment hours. Of course there's services like online streaming which will cost you $10 - $20 a month, and provide more content to watch then hours in a month. There are flaws with my argument, like assuming someone doesn't have a commute home, that they will spend every waking second of every day consuming entertainment, or that my listed play times were always filled with entertaining experiences. However, even with these flaws made for my own convinces, you would have to assume margins larger than a factor of 10 of flawed reporting in a value preposition.
to be fair this is still a scam, they can try to improve the "game" as much as they want but i dont understand how an average player can support this project
Whilst i think its a far cry better than it was, i still dont think it looks amazing, or is really anything special at all. To me, it’s a bunch of plugins that have been thrown in together and slowly over time, been made to actually work like they are supposed to. If i paid AAA money for this game right now i would still be extremely disappointed. When Callum says that it’s turning into ‘something special’ i cant help but think he’s drank too much of the kool aid and his exposure to this ‘game’ has basically radicalised him into becoming a believer, lmao. The game is better than it was, yes. It’s a fair bit better. However it’s STILL an utter jumbled mish mash mess of styles and concepts that’ll take more than a few bug fixes and features to pull it out of the garbage pile it still firmly resides in. I still think Grit and Zack are shitty humans for all their lying and conniving, ripping people off, and i don’t think anything will ever wash that sour taste from my mouth. Let’s not forget, what they are doing now is the absolute bear minimum you would expect from ANY game devs, and whilst what they are doing is the right thing to do, I cant justify praising them when they are simply doing the job they have been paid (extremely generously) to do.
I'm impressed with DW for cleaning up so well, and I'm equally impressed with Callum for not being a hypocrite about seeing actual improvement. Its so awesome to see you actually support/promote them for doing things right.
I mean... yeah, they are improving things, but this game still looks like absolute garbage, I'm sorry. I'm glad you can find positives here now, but be honest.. would you ever actually 'play' this if there wasn't any history between you and Dreamworld? This still looks like a 13 year old's first programming steps.
"slowly becoming something incredible" ... eh, please hold your horses a little bit. The game is still very, very bad. Saying they're improving, ok. But incredible? Comeon.
"its slowly becoming something incredible" yea im not sure about that it might not be a total dumpster fire anymore but incredible? it looks like one of tose games that came out in the big steam survival game rush when you looked at the ones with the worst reviews. im not saying this to be an ass or because i think it cant possible ever be anything. im just baffeled what you see in the game that made you say this. is it the fact that they finally started to listen to bug reports an try fixing them? because that (in my opinion) isnt a sign that it will turn into something incredible but that it ll turn into an atleast playable game.
Congrats to them for sticking with it so far. I wouldn’t use the descriptors you use. It still looks like an extremely early rough prototype of an idea without any clear USPs. It’s best features are still looking like an inferior Minecraft. Doesn’t matter if that game has been out for a long time, as a player I just want to play a good game. So I’d pick Minecraft over this any day. I hope they stick with it and at some point find their own unique fun to bring, but it’s not there yet.
"The game is starting to actually look beautiful." Did you upload the wrong footage or something? They may have fixed some glaring issues, but it still looks like trash. Sure, the water looks nice, but everything else looks awful. UI/UX. Animations. Gameplay. All of that looks awful.
This is why you guys kept on them, to make sure they made a game. They are making a game. It will never be what they promised in the Kickstarter, but it feels good they're actually WORKING.
Honestly? From when we first saw this development, (I hesitate to call it a game quite yet) to now, its night and day and starting to resemble what might be a OK game in the end. Expectations are very low, but I don't think its going along to badly for a rough early build.
you keep saying things look beautiful and the water looks great etc, are you looking at a different video? it still looks like a 6 year old was let loose on a world editor and the water looks okay-ish, if the game was from 2007.... I cant help but wondering how much they paid you :P
I'm rly skeptic about what you are doing here. This game is still trash and a scam, it does not offer real gameplay or progression also the development and progress they have done is a joke. Didnt they earned millions ? But the more videos your are doing the more it sounds like you helping them to convince people to play that "game". I think you should consider not doing videos about dreamworld because indirectly your are supporting them, which they didnt deserve. @Callum Upton
Honestly, pushing the whole DreamWorld redemption arc is pretty lame. It is, and always has been, an absolute scam. It still looks like an asset flip, and even if it does actually release some day, you shouldn't support the behaviour of these...'devs'. You can do better man.
dude you living in 2003? games looks like a game that hasnt got an engine. it should be free no one should have to payy for this shit. so when did they stated to pay you
I fully expected this game to end up in court. I'm genuinely happy that (admittedly forced by Callum) they didn't abandon it, and kept working. Who knows, maybe in a year or two, we'll all be unironically playing Dreamworld.
As someone who works hard every day for my money I demand more fun from a game I play than the amount I make per hour. 18 dollars for an hour worth of fun would make no sense for me.
i can not believe they are actually turning this game around for the better, big props to them. And props to you for covering not only the bad but as well as the good. im honestly looking forward to how this all turns out.
Finally catching up on the Dreamworld saga (you’ve forgotten to add some videos by the way), I’m really glad you’re choosing a positive route for encouragement instead of berating (the easier option). Great coverage as always!
It's so weird to see a scam turn around? I never expected this and ngl. Hats off to the devs on this, It's not easy to leave a life of scamming and they really seem to want this.
Am I missing something? This game looks vastly worse than any number of other survival/building games. Are people simply excited because it promises to be an MMO?
Most people being excited are ones who didn't invest a dollar in that game ever. The ones who actually paid top dollar on Kickstarter gave up a while ago, some of them even got constantly banned, and some others never received their Kickstarter game key. People forget it is not a devlog of a game coming out eventually in the next years, it is actually still sold for 40$ the copy since months, and for a live game that broken the updates they push out weekly are just too small to really make a change in the next years. Everyone cries out if big studios publish a beta to do final testings on the back of the paying customers, but this is no difference, just that this is not even close to a beta at all.
I think it's important to note that it'll never become what it was promised to be. The dream of 1,000,000 players on the same server and such just isn't possible. But it can still be a good game, and it looks like they're on the right track. Love the way you're reporting this!
gotta say, despite the absolute dumpster fire of a start, i have to give it to them. they're at least, at LEAST, giving it a bit more effort. i hope they continue this trend, and if they can become real game devs and make something decent out of this, well I hope it'll be a lesson well learned and we can all enjoy what they made.
Yeah, the game looks better now. Still far from a real game. However, the main issue is still that they will run out of money since their Kickstarter was way too low to actually do a full game.
@@zieba6245 Literally any other video of his is about the negatives. They did a "decent" update (decent in comparison), why wouldn't he talk about that?
Took a chance on this game DreamLord level.... have not played too much because I understand its early in Alpha... remember all the scam video makers saying Doom Doom Doom. Well, I am happy that I took a $$$huge for me anyways$$$ chance on the Dreamworld Dev team! Hoping to build a HUGE city out on the frontier sometime soon! I do have land in the Dev city, but have not inquired where it is.... Plenty of time! Thank you
Hello. The name SpecPixel Came to mind after watching a BigFry TV video "The Biggest Scammer in Indie Gaming Gets Caught Again" The person behind SpecPixel is not a trustworthy individual and has lied before on various RP game projects
Yea guys buy the game callum is telling you to buy this shit. Full sale mode. Wow guys only 8 dollars such good deal that's only one hour of work guys. Forget I'm clearly shilling for these conmen who use kids to mod their discord and how I was calling them a scam for being unable to meet what they promised 4 weeks ago. No guys now buy it. It's amazing beautiful stunning great value. Lmao
This is weird. The fact that the game looks almost decent right now doesnt change the fact that they lied through their teeth on kickstarter just to get peoples money. tbh It feels like they got away with it. "Dont know what to do? Just promise the world to get cash, do jack shit for a couple months and then start implementing basic features to gain back some of the reputation you lost"
Callum, question. If the creators of dreamer came out and said, "initially, we were trying to scam people, but this has indeed turned into the real deal. Against our initial intent"... Could they get in trouble for that. I mean, they're actually kind of delivering on what they originally promised. So they technically haven't lied
Lets be real they cant realy be forgivin for all there lies but if this were to be seen from the point of few of a indiy devolper which they arnt it would actualy be pretty cool
At least these guys are taking the criticism and making something out of it. I do not think they’d have been as motivated without videos like yours and others.
