Callum's videos took a big turn in tone at the point at which Dreamworld stopped flailing around on social media while dropping a weekly asset pack into the game, and started actually putting a little work into building the game. That did feel like the beginnings of a redemption arc. But suddenly turning legit wasn't going to make them suddenly turn competent or profitable. = [

Since these developers are mainly kids using the UE docs/forums they have no use cases nor experience on the downsides of implementing stuff. They have no clue what does what and are actually just experimenting. Everything you add needs to be tested and iterated. They're just adding and adding stuff, fixing stuff which breaks stuff. It's a bad method of working as you're pretty much reinventing the wheel. GameJam is a good example of Indie devs working with no money, no donations no kickstarter to make a game within rulesets. This is a great way to learn how to manage projects and make great games. They're pretty much the same thing you get at the university (As a Software Developer) with projects to tackle use cases companies faced. It's great to experiment and learn the engine, but don't go asking 30 bucks for it.

The sentiment of "you can be proud of what you've made, but you have to realize when it just isn't fun" is definitely a very important thing to consider with game development - as I am much the same way. Hopefully I'll remember it going forward!

I think this is good advice for anything, really. Even if you change the word "fun" to "functional", "useful", or something else. As a teacher, I make all sorts of things for my classes - from the basics, like assignments, to full-blown hour+ long simulations. But no matter how proud I am of what I do (and trust me, I am *proud* of those simulations), if it isn't engaging and fun? I either have to scrap it or utterly revamp it. Our pride can't blind us to whether we achieve our goals.

applies to any kind of art. I especially see a lot of writers do this. They think just because they wrote up an idea they had in a technically correct and aesthetically pleasing way it's a good story. if you're making it just for fun or in hopes that someone else will enjoy that's one thing, but a lot of these people are trying to sell that shit...

9:30 I think the actual issue of the game is that they have no idea what the game is they wanted to make, they just came up with features and put them in one EXE. They don't know what a game is, they didn't have a game in mind to create. Even if they hired the world's best devs to make their game, it would look polished as hell, but it wouldn't play like anything you would enjoy. It would be just a 3D virtual place to walk around in.

What's strange to me is the fact that they're now building a regular, typical MMO, while the pitch was originally a "sandbox"-like experience wherein you would be able to add multiple gamemodes, objects, etc. A platform that would be able to do "anything". How's that going?

I'll give DreamWorld this much, it really does seem like the devs are trying. I thought it was a scam and they would run as soon as they had the money. But I have absolutely no faith DW will ever succeed. There's a huge difference between wanting to make a game, and being able to make a game... and it is pretty clear they do not know how to make a game.
@oliver_twistor
@oliver_twistor 2 года назад
They would probably have to scrap everything they have and start fresh with their new knowledge of development. They need to find a clear focus on what game they want to make and then stick to that vision. This game as it currently is a Frankenstein's monster of sewn together disparate parts. No matter how many more parts they add, they will never be able to make the game good because the foundation is bad.
@juances

I think RU-vidrs owe apology to these devs. They called them scammers and dragged their names trough a mud from the beginning, when in fact the devs ended up delivering a game on low budget. (Many projects with 10 times+ the funding praised by the community just ran away with the money) Sure the game isn't great, but still effort was clearly put into it.

Funny to hear that game dev is a lot like art: You spend hours upon hours drawing a certain thing, maybe even finishing an entire piece and then just have to be honest with yourself when things don't look right or don't convey what you want them to. What you said about building something and then having to scrap it hit me so hard. When I was designing a device for my senior project in college, I spent a month making a purely mechanical system to switch the batteries from in series to parallel for discharging/charging. After I showed it to the team and showed it worked, they bought a rechargable battery to use in it. I was crushed but I realized that my way, while interesting, was completely impractical. The mantra of any designer is "Fail Faster", and it is by far the hardest lesson to learn
@sammyers9576
@sammyers9576 2 года назад
Your comment on throwing out systems really hits home. Non-game programmers have to do this as well, perhaps less often, and it was a difficult one for me. My CTO said something that put it in perspective, “I’d rather throw away a few days of your work than have us maintain the wrong thing forever”

Funny you should mention about first time development. I remember my first attempt to make a game back in 2019 and it was a big learning experience for me. I'd never made anything like it before but I decided that I wanted to make it a real game as id had this idea in my head for years. The project would have been a first person horror game with five levels each with different gameplay. It was a mistake to try and do so many different gameplay systems rather than just one that could be fun. The game would go from being like PT or being like slender to even turning into a platformer at one point. I worked hard on it on off for about 6 to 8 months. Fair to say it didn't work out and I never finished it. I made so many mistakes in development ranging from messy code, not planning out level design, no tutorials, tones of bugs and that's just the start of it. However despite the fact the game clearly was pretty bad and sloppy I still hold a soft spot for it because I learned so much whilst making it. A few years later I've learned a lot more about game development since that project and understand a lot of my mistakes. I'm still early as a dev in many ways and do run into problems but I hope one day I can actually launch a game of my own and people will enjoy it. I do feel that more developers should talk about there first time making a game as that's not something that get's brought up enough.

I only just today heard about DreamWorld, and have quickly binge watched all of the drama while I was working to catch up with what happened. So when I clicked on this video, I was actually surprised to see what can technically be called "a game". This feels almost like The Producers, where these two knuckleheads tried to scam people and are now being forced to scramble and create a video game with zero know due to a few RU-vidrs pointing out the scam. I feel like these two are in prison, and people like Callum are their wardens making sure that they carry out their sentence of spending hours upon hours creating something that will never realistically work.

Good video, I have to say, before I thought DreamWorld was just a scam but after watching all your videos about it I'm almost inclined to change my mind. Don't get me wrong what they did for advertising and funding was still VERY scummy, but maybe, JUST MAYBE it was not malicious with intent to scam, but more of just incompetence and inexperience and that they did intend to make the game they said/promised they were making until it came time to actually make it and their inexperience caught up to them. Or it could still just be a big scam and they are only planning on doing the bare minimum to release all the backer rewards to cover their legal bases to avoid any lawsuits. I am starting to kind of lean the other way, but it won't surprise me if they just cut and run as soon as the bases are covered and are not in danger of getting sued

@Lenariet

I think many games struggle with the lack of genuine reasons to build something at some point or another, especially when there is already some kind of established "meta" where either guides/tutorials will tell you how to set up things and which structures and items to deem useful and worth your time or not or when people will directly and maybe with one finger near the kick vote button tell you in multiplayer to do it either the way xyz or get lost. Like, in "Don't Starve Together" I of course could build many walls around my base or set up extensive trap fields for enemies. But walls can burn down or are easily destroyed by bosses literally just moving through them, and both walls and traps consume large amounts of resources that instead could be spent on something more useful and less fragile. Even that aside there are many RNG-ish hostile elements in the world - why even make a big, fancy base in it to begin with when it all it takes is one silly mistake to lose it all and render your time wasted and thus (in a sense) non-respected too? And that basic question is only bigger in multiplayer where you are supposed to survive with others and not make their lives potentially harder by wasting valuable (non-renewable) resources on stuff that is totally far away from the "meta". I notice such an "inconsistency" in open world sandbox-survival games between theory and reality quite often. You have like these hypothetical endless options, but will you actually ever use them? I have come to realize: "No, proably not." If I ever go beyond the purely necessary than that is only because out of spite and boredom, because I actually want to build something big and fancy or just silly to test the engine and the technical boundaries - but certainly not because of any actual relevant gameplay implications. No, that large tower in "ARK - Survival Evolved" that I'm gonna be kissing the sky gods with will not help me tame some super rare dino lurking in the stratosphere or kill some nasty moon boss that I would otherwise never defeat. I'm just putting it there for the lulz. Of course if a game is only out long enough there will always be some kind of "meta". But it still bugs me a bit, this discrepancy. And the technical limits always seem to be left out but should be mentioned more often: even if I can do lots of stuff in a game, who knows when the engine will give up and the game start dropping really bad in FPS or my save file gets corrupted or whatever. This is just as important today as it was yesterday, seeing how projects like E2 are promising the world and nothing less but at the same time people neither using similar PC hardware nor the same platform (PC vs. consoles vs. handhelds) to begin with. There is a totally good reason why I don't play open world survival-crafting games on my Playstation but only on PC instead. Sure, I don't need an absurd amount of time spent on some silly RNG-implementation to get my first pickaxe crafted in ARK or to get a bow in "The Forest". But this can also go wrong the other way. You hoping to not lose that hard-earned first pickaxe in DreamWorld, there can be a certain value to that - mostly methaporically by you appreciating having done this... incredible (?) feat but also like when you were actually down to fully embrace NFTs and the monetization of gameplay. ("Mint your precious tier 1 bone pickaxe and sell for a minimum of 500 USD!"). But I guess I can see how risk vs. reward or time spent vs. things earned can be a tricky thing in game development and that DreamWorld isn't doing too well there. When in doubt it's probably wiser to design things on the easy side. I sure as hell wouldn't have the patience to go through such a chore. But on the other hand I find games like The Forest too easy, the way items and resource nodes are hardcoded to respawn at specific spots forever and ever and ever in a relatively short span of time. How does that fit into a horror-themed game where you are supposed to struggle for survival? Exactly: it doesn't. TL:DR: making a worthwile game loops seems like really hard work.

I remember a project I started working on in Uni which was initially a Grass physics test, this expanded into a full idea on a game and took approximately 6 months to get to the point it was up to. I quickly realized it was out of scope when I was spending 90% of my time creating assets to add to the game rather than working on the game mechanics. The ideas I had were overly ambitious for one person, but I think if I were to go back to it (as I was almost complete for having all the assets required for the main POI) i'd probably turn it into an adventure game involving various different basic quests to complete, the problem is that the stealth system was only half-way to being completed, and the combat was a basic prototype at this point. Developing a game takes a lot of time and effort to do properly, I have since gone on to develop mobile games and it still now takes me months to complete a game (Doesn't help with how terrible it is to develop on Android when using Unreal Engine though)

My first development project was a simple endless runner game that relies on just pressing on the screen as fast as possible so you don't fall down. It is quite bad game on so many levels and it's no longer published anywhere. It was precious learning experience and I did many many mistakes that I had to work on later. I finished it in 2017 but the thing is I was proud of it and wanted to make money with it so I can build my first gaming desktop but I couldn't bring myself to put it on sale instead I relied on ads that earned exactly 0€. Now dreamworld is bad on as many levels as my first game and I can say that they managed to keep the promises but the game will never be a MMO in the definition of MMO, it's MO and with people buying the game out of curiosity only it will never be able to keep devs afloat.

The appearance of the jump (can you even call it an animation?) How far it goes and the landing just hurts my soul because of how bad it looks.

Well Minecraft is the opposite, that's why it's so popular Every building block has multiple purposes, and each tier of tool progressively helps the player achieve tasks faster.

i think they'll abandon it, but not cut and run. i think they'll try to kickstart another game. no idea what kind of game they want to make, but i can see a passion to want to make a game, its just when a game is this atrociously unfun it's probably the wisest decision for them to start from scratch

This has got to be the only timeline where Dreamworld is more likely to become an actual game than Titanreach :(

Well, with Titanreach having hit the deck the way it did, at least there was a decent chance at first that just slumped a few months ago. With Dreamworld, there was never a chance.

Well, I agree that assuming you are payed by DW Dev´s is insane, but more videos about it is more exposure. I´m 100% sure there are some people who have like 30$ or w/e is costs rn to burn to experience the same stuff you have for giggles. But in the end that will drag the end of DW just further out. They should have stopped when they realized "oh shit it aint that ez" , cancel the funding, write a nice letter from that they learned and make a Single Player game out of the leftovers. They could have started a new fundraiser for that SP game or even better: Take their own money and make that SP Game a Demo and if it´s sound with the community you can expand from there. Having a playable Demo on Fundraiser start is a very big plus imo. For me that would be even a bigger signal of growth instead of trying to form a pile of sh*t into something that looks like it has value. Admitting to mistake and making the right moves based on that is something way more attractive then w/e they are trying here. Sry if I came off in my previous comments as a negative Andy but I really like your content but I´m really not a fan of DW and the way they choose.

@jorymo4964
@jorymo4964 2 года назад
Is this underflow?
@TheRealOxidan
@TheRealOxidan 2 года назад
@@jorymo4964 Its overflow. The max value of a signed integer is 2,147,483,647. As a signed binary that would be 01111111 11111111 11111111 11111111. The first bit denotes if the number is positive or negative with 0 being positive and 1 being negative. Once you go to 2,147,483,648 the signed binary becomes 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 10000000 00000000 00000000 00000000. 8 bytes can't fit into 4 bytes so there is an overflow of 4 bytes. The computer will take the first 4 bytes and cut them off to make it fit into the 4 bytes. The signed binary then becomes 10000000 00000000 00000000 00000000. Since the first bit is now 1 the number becomes negative and you get -2,147,483,648 as an integer. Edit: Typos. Should also mention -2,147,483,648 is the smallest number a signed integer can hold. Usually an overflow would result from some math calculations but in this case its due to them not checking if the user input fits within the range of a signed integer.

As an aspiring game developer, I never want to be in the position of the Dreamworld devs, because if they truly want to make the game and do not intend this to be an outright scam, then they are truly and utterly clueless about how game DESIGN works. If it's just the two of them with one or two other developers, then yes - they should be proud that they've managed to develop what they've developed so far, but the issue is that there is no clear direction in the design of the game, no systems that compliment eachother, no fun or engaging gameplay. A game is at its core an entertainment product - fun and spectacle matter. If you make things for the sake of having running code, then you're simply developing a game *without designing it* - and that's a big problem.

I got into game dev exactly 7 days ago explicitly because these guys make it look so hard. I continue to be baffled by every decision they’re making; like yea their assets suck, and they somehow fucked up the physics, and every system they create is wonky as hell, but behind all of that are a bunch of brains that consider these all to be LOWER priority than… continuing to… make more mistakes? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if none of your components function on their own, then won’t they all break each other every update? Why don’t they just make *an asset* they’re happy with before implementation XD

Been following this for awhile now and the one question that always nagged at me is "What the hell is the point of this "game"?" It doesn't seem to be for doing quests since I don't see any NPC's standing around waiting for some one to take their quest. It seems to me that the devs are just throwing crap against the wall waiting for something to stick.

Some of it is the WIP cave system, and some of it is our own digging. I went a bit ham this morning on the terraforming too. The world does heal from time to time, but that isn't happening for the moment as the lanterns are being changed.
