I would just like to say a huge thank you for these videos. This week, I was struggling and felt like I was going nowhere with my learning. However I just watched this video, and have realised how far I have come, as I was able to understand the whole thing quite easily without translating in my head. Keep up the amazing content Pablo!

Creo que para los estudiantes avanzados sería útil buscar palabras desconocidas en un diccionario español monolingüe. Creo que eso me ha ayudado. Tengo un diccionario español que tiene ejemplos de como usar las palabras en frases. Pero hay veces cuando no hay opción y tengo que buscar una traducción o ver una foto o dibujo.

Hola 🙂 estoy explorando tu canal y casi estoy de acuerdo contigo. Sin embargo, hay que partir de algún lugar y la traducción es lo más fácil y más rápido que hay. No veo ningún problema en usarla para empezar. Yo misma he aprendido dos idiomas de manera no recomendada en tu método, es decir con listas de palabras traducidas y no pasa nada 😉 obviamente no ha sido la única estrategia pero al principio me ha dado mucha seguridad saber qué significa exactamente en mi idioma la palabra que estoy aprendiendo. Además, los demás significados como, en tu ejemplo, echar una mano, no son tan lejanos de la visión que tenemos bajo el concepto de 'una mano' en si. Total, muchas gracias por este contenido. Saludos 🌞

Gracias! Your videos are so clear. When I listen to your videos, I don't tend to translate words because it is enough if I understand the context. But when I read, speak or write, I very often translate words because even easy words don't come up to my mind.

¡hola! i get that context is king, but, what do you think if when, say, instead of leaving the full concept of a word for the future to behold, we get to a level where we can just look at the meaning of the spanish word in an actual spanish dictionary/google - would that still go against your argument? ¿qué piensa usted? ¡gracias por todos!

I’m at an intermediate level, having come from other programs that teach vocabulary the old fashioned way. My understanding is that your beginner videos teach vocabulary through drawings or gestures. My question is- what is the best way for a person at an intermediate level to pick up new words? Is it good to look them up in a dictionary, as one starts to hear them in videos? Is it better to just try to figure out the meaning from hearing them in different contexts? I’m comparing this method to how a child naturally learns their native language. Wouldn’t looking up words in a dictionary be comparable to a child asking their parents what a certain word means? Thanks!

Even at the intermediate level, getting vocabulary just from the input is the best approach. Children learn at the rate of several words a day, and the majority of that is from incidental learning, not from getting explanations for every word. This is a subject that's quite well researched. Even if you check a dictionary, the most common thing is to immediately forget that word. And then, if using something like flashcards to not forget the translation for that word, you still haven't learned 95% of the information that you need to know to be able to use that word: the whole extent of the meaning of the word, for what meanings of the English word it can't be used as a translation, how to use the word grammatically, its nuances and contexts in which it's appropriate to use it, collocations, etc. Acquiring from input is still necessary, and all the ways that we try to shortcut that seem to do more harm than good.

@@hanuelboy My brain tries to translate everything into English. It is a saying to "filter the spanish through my english brain". I need to think in Spanish. :)

Well said, I couldn't agree more. This also really is most noticeable when the language has almost no relation to your native language. I'm taking a yucatec mayan class for my major, and translating word for word would make essentially zero sense for just about the entire language (absence of a verb "to be" in the language, expressions like "my soul (is) very happy to see you" for "nice to meet you", etc). I'll probably never get beyond the A1 or A2 level just because there are no comprehensible input resources, let alone recorded media, like series, for the language. And I'm almost certainly not moving there.

Isn't reading not a part of the ALG method though?

The only place ALG is being used right now is at AUA, where they do have reading classes once you get to advanced level. Reading is compatible with the ALG principles if you start doing it after you are very familiar with how the language sounds. I actually think that extensive reading (reading for pleasure at your level) is a very good thing and it should be part of an ALG program that aimed to have their students become 100% literate. But again I would only introduce reading after enough listening has been done, probably between a few hundred to more than 1000 hours.

I have to watch your intermediate videos on double speed for it to feel like a "good speed". Does this mean I'm past intermediate? I wouldn't even be able to write this in spanish without making some grammar errors so I think I understand much better than I write/speak.

I think there are different kinds of "intermediate". Many people here have studied vocabulary and can identify many words but it takes them time to process so they benefit from this speed. If, like me, you've learned mostly through input, you can understand the words that you know immediately even when spoken at full speed. You may need just to be exposed to harder vocabulary. I'm thinking of doing that in my advanced videos. What would you say that's missing for you when you watch native media that makes it hard to understand? Mostly harder vocabulary?

By the way, we all understand much better than we speak or write. It also happens with our native languages, so there's no reason to be surprised or to try to fight it. Now you have plenty of vocabulary and grammar that has passed the threshold of understanding, but it hasn't yet passed the threshold of production. With time, with more input, more and more words and expressions will pass the threshold of production and you will eventually have a repertoire big enough to talk about anything without impediments.

Bueno, de hecho el problema con aprender palabras es que no sabes nada del contexto. ¿Que es la traducción de _poner_ o _quedar?_ Sin más contexto no lo sabes. Por eso creo que con el contexto puedes traducir muchas palabras, o al menos, no lo sé, digamos 80%. Las palabras del resto tienes que investigar y incluso eso no tiene a veces éxito. Por ejemplo, ¿qué significa _echar_ en _echar de menos_ en inglés? Soy alemán y esta expresión me desconcerta mucho. XD Solo conozco la traducción de esta expresión entera pero no del verbo _echar_ en esta frase.

Acabo de ver este video y noté tu comentario de hace dos años. En caso de que no hayas encontrado una respuesta a tu pregunta sobre la expresión "echar de menos", una expresión que también me ha confundido, aquí hay una explicación que espero aclare el significado : "en la expresión echar de menos, el verbo echar se coló por una confusión. En realidad, en su origen, la locución es de los portugueses y ellos dicen achar menos, donde achar es el verbo hallar. El sentido implícito es 'sentir la falta de…'. Al pasar al castellano, debió traducirse como hallar menos; pero, el oído popular, confundió achar con echar y así nació echar menos, que así se usó primero." capsuladelengua.wordpress.com/2010/06/05/echar-de-menos/. En inglés decimos "to miss (someone or something)".
