I will never be a teacher or professor. It's too late for me. I am a middle aged man. I have more years of life behind me than ahead. I know this to be true. My circle of friends is small. Sounds like a good idea to me.
@@guidofeliz8384 Personally I like to learn things just for the sake of learning them. There is something hugely satisfying about teaching yourself something and then noticing that you get better and better at it.
@@Peter_1986 : Exactly my point. I was a student long ago. I now review material learned back in my high school and college days. I love education. I try to stay on top of my game.

As someone who has been independently studying math/physics outside of a formal school setting, it is so rare to stumble across others who share interest in it. Often when I mention that I study it for the sake of pure interest and curiosity, I'm met with blank stares or condescending comments. I think it is important for us mathematicians to not give in, and rather try our best to explain why we enjoy what we do and feel completely unashamed for it. Anyone willing to learn a challenging concept is on the right path in my book. Perhaps this is anecdotal based on my internet experiences, but I do believe math is slowly and steadily gaining more positive traction, thanks to channels like Professor Leonard, 3blue1brown, Khan Academy, etc. I'm excited to see where this realm of free and open education leads to. Thank you for posting this, Professor Leonard.

I'm a Computer Science student and when I first got to community college I started off with algebra... I hated it and thought it was hard. I fought through it while watching your videos and i'm now in Calculus 2. I also enjoy math despite how difficult it can get. You taught me that anything is possible. Thank you for everything!
Thank you sir. I am 23 and about to start college while working full time. I will be majoring in Economics and will require a lot of math and quants. I have been bad at math my whole life and very lazy which I think is majority of my issue. Just found your channel and this video has given me the motivation to start taking math serious and enjoy the process
I have my Calc 3 finals in the morning. I spent the weekend watching your lectures. Everything makes so much sense. Thank You! This exam has no clue what’s coming at it. I got this!
I have dyscalculia and struggled throughout school in math. Professor Leonard you teaching style and methods of making math make sense has helped me tremendously in my college mathematics class. Thank you so much I feel more confident about my mathematics abilities 😊
I’ve had teachers in middle school who HATED when a student asked a question just to clarify something. They would say something along the lines of “if you were paying attention you would know” then go on and on and put them on blast and make them look like a fool in front of everyone else. Never asked questions because of that, from the fear of being humiliated. I feel those people should not be teachers. Also, I would like to thank you so much professor. I already took calculus 1 and calculus 2 but I am watching these lectures to prepare for calculus 3. These lectures are better than anything I’ve seen on the internet. Especially the ones you pay for. Plus I am reading a book along with the lecture to reinforce my understanding and the purpose of each section. My goal is to finish up to your calculus 3 lecture before the end of summer to prepare for calculus 3! Thank you for everything.
I’m late to this channel but this has been not only the best way to learn math but you completely changed my feelings toward math. You’re not only a great professor but an inspirational person. Thank you for posting these I hope nothing but the best for you.
I face the same problems by studying physics. I agree 100%. Math has the ability to describe reality at a fundamental level and this is without regard to its inherent beauty. Thank you Professor Leonard!
I'm first-year undergraduate mathematics major at UC San Diego and it really is hard to find people who share the same love for math. You are one of my role models and your lectures have helped me so much and in some cases more than my professors. You break things down in a way for even non "math people" to understand and you would be someone I would point to as the face of math for students today
I don't comment on many videos, but honestly without you I don't know where I would be in my life right now. You gave me a second wind at school. I was stuck in calc2 and thought that I would never pass the class and your vidoes made me see calc as a new art form, I put the hardwork in and by watching your videos and understanding the way you explanation things made me understand calc on a level that I thought I could never achieve. I passed calc2 with a 95% and right now I'm taking DiffEq, I'm a step closer to becoming an engineer. Sincerely from the bottom of my heart I appreciate you can thank you for what you have done. The world is a mean and nasty place. And as one great man once said, "It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." , Thank you professor Leonard. I wish the best for you.
Love you, Professor Leonard. I had a condescending teacher in my calculus 3 class who also picked on me for being the only girl in his class, your videos not only got me through the class but also got me through with an A. Now I'm working on quantum mechanics in physical chemistry classes, thank you so much for your helpful insightful videos.
I'm from the Philippines and I really love you videos. I wish for your good health and continue what you are doing. Again, thank you professor Leonard. God bless you and your channel.
Calculus is the first section in math that truly opened my eyes to the beauty of math. And it was mostly because of my high school calculus professor, and now, because of you as I work my way through your Calc III videos. Before, I wouldn't see trigonometry or even pre calculus as awesome, but now I appreciate it all because it's simply amazing how the more I learn, the more I value everything that I've learned before it. Thank you for all your videos, I can only wish I had found your channel sooner
Professor, Sending a great big THANK YOU to you all the way from South Africa !!! Exactly... I'm teaching "Math extra classes" due to the fact that so many student just don't BELIEVE that they CAN do Mathematics... So often it's not a matter of intelligence, but of HEART... A broken heart seems to let the mathematics skills "drain out"... and that's just terrible... But seeing a child's eyes light up with enlightenment and the JOY of Mathematics is simply INCREDIBLE... A God-given privilege... God bless & keep you !
Professor Leonard, you are one of humanity's greatest people and I really mean that. I have been absolutely burnt out from not just school but from living and often times I don't have the motivation to learn. It's not that people make fun of me or make me feel stupid; I bring that upon myself. So thank you for your words of encouragement, I really need this. Looks like I'll be coming back to proofs really soon, and it is all thanks to you! Thanks again Professor!!!
One of the most humble and caring professors out there. I want to thank you so much for putting out math content for us to learn from. I wish you and your family a better future. Much love from North Carolina.
Professor Leonard, i am 31 and in school while working a full time job. Your passion and love for math has been the reason I have passed calc 2&3. I am taking diff Eq and linear algebra next semester and will be going straight to your videos. Thank you so much for what you do!
Oh WOW there's hope! I'm 32 all the way from KE, and now I feel totally encouraged. I'm taking pre-requisite courses to help me in career and join school in the near future. Good luck to to you and I hope you aced your exams!
@@elizabethn4131 while I only finished 3/4 of my EE degree so far and I’ll be 35 this year. It let me apply for an apprenticeship with my workplace and I just found out yesterday that I got it! Thank you for your kind words :-)
Just got my results for Calc 3. Passed it with a pretty good grade by just watching your videos. Didn't attend a single lecture at my uni. Much gratitude for your work :)
As a linguist, I value math because it is a perfect language that has the abilty to communicate deep meaning through a universal (and I do mean truly ""universal") vocabulary. I am 57 years old and I am starting Calc I with your help because it is a language I feel compelled to acquire and master. Thank you, Professor Leonard!
I've always hated math. I've never thought I could do it. It kept me from pursuing my dreams for so long. I just finished finals in my college calc class with a 96% and I truly could not have done it without you. Thank you professor.
“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty-a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.” ― Bertrand Russell Back in middle and high school, I used to have this discouraging feeling from being made fun at when saying I liked Maths. However, by the time I got to college and had my courses of calculus A through C, I had finally seen the hidden beauty of Maths and FELT a glimpse of passion to study it. When you reach this point of realization, you'll lose every bit of insecurity in showing your love of Maths and instead you will grow a light sense of pride in it :)
Prof. Leonard, your country has thousands of people in it who believe that the earth is flat. I doubt that's simple because they don't understand math, but rather because no one encouraged them to do more and to be more. Don't let anyone talk down to your enthusiasm and love of math. It is so generous of you to share that with the world through RU-vid. Hundred of comments left on your videos attest to how you are changing people's lives. You have single handedly done more for Calculus education on earth than any other human being alive today.
Thank you for speaking about this topic. Some of the brightest minds are shut down because of discouraging comments from teachers. Academics should be a place to build minds, not tear them down. I love your channel, well spoken video.
Dear Professor Leonard, you’re a great man and a great teacher. I just finished calculus 4 and differential equations. You helped me through many exams. Keep on mathing. It is truly important. Some people will never understand. You’re a resource for many people who will one day be Engineers, mathematicians, and really any other area that requires mathematics. I wish there were more people who looked like Superman and taught online math for free.
@@BenjaminsNotes Right! There could be organized channels that have their own subjects like Calculus 1, Diff E, etc... And the best part is that there would be live help from other students!
I was in Iraq in 2015 when I was in the Marine Corps. I was getting ready to get out after 8 long years. I knew i wanted to go to college, but I felt that I wouldn't be able to be successful because I felt like I would be so far behind academically. I was out of school for so long. I found your channel and started from the very basics you taught, and followed along and practiced the best I could and ultimately ended up very successful in school. I did well on the ACT and it took off from there. Thank you Leonard. Thank you so much!
I do not like math, that's due to a host of lifelong issues but nevertheless, the way you explain things so clearly, so thoroughly, and meticulously, I have nothing but utmost respect for you Professor Leonard. I see your passion for Mathematics and I feel nothing but admiration. You, sir, have my lifelong respect. as you believe in us, so do we believe in you. Thank you.
Sir , you are the best. I have 2 yr old son, I will teach him math through your videos and most importantly i want to teach him the values you follow and make him a successful human being. To me your videos are more than Maths. Thank you very much.
Just to share guys, I failed two times on my licensure exam here in the phils, because of that i almost gave up, i did not know where to start, but it did not prevent me on trying, and i returned to basic of everything, and prof. leonards vid helped me a lot. Math is not about knowing the number, its loving and being excited about it. its the foundation of everything, know math you can handle almost anything, and to prof leonard I will forever be thankful. Here I am, 4 years being Electrical Engineer now.
Well said, the appreciation can never be fully artuliculated for what you've done for us. Despite that. I just want to say thank you for being a mentor and teacher for us when we all needed one.
on my way to class glad i took the seven minutes to hear professor Leonard speak, i recently started learning about differential forms and using the wedge product this was incredible timing
I’m at the end of CALC II and only heard of these videos a couple weeks ago. Thank you for showing proofs, not skipping steps, starting your lessons with a refresher, and treating your students with dignity. Those who know it well can explain it simply, thank you for passing on your knowledge. ~ Wannabe Dork
I had one of the worst Calculus 1 professors in my college to the point where not one student could legitimately not depend on him. Thankfully, my brother gave the word to me about you and you helped me survive the class. Thank you for teaching me, for teaching us 🙏
Perhaps you will never see this message, but I just wanted to put it out there. Although it is geared towards people who like math subject, the implications of your message are far bigger than you’ll ever know. Scrolling through my YT feed today, looking for videos on “how to deal with an abusive relationship”, I clicked on your video and started balling. Your words about not letting people take things you like away from you, gosh, touched my heart. I am 3 days away from college graduation (I lived through many math classes thanks to your lessons), and I feel like an avalanche of change is coming my way. I don’t believe in signs, but hearing your message the very day I realize I need to change my life is nothing less than magical, feeling like someone out there is watching our for me 💞. Thansk Prof Leonard!!
Well, I don't believe in coincidences. I'm quite sure that many people have spoken into my life at the EXACT time I needed them to during pivotal moments. I am very proud of you for making it through whatever you have gone through and graduating. That's an incredible accomplishment and I wish you the best of luck. God bless!!
Professor Leonard you are the Math RU-vid GOAT! Your lectures got me through Cal1-3! I do my best to put all my homies on your shit! You make content relatable, clear, and understandable. When I watch your lecture I don’t memorize patterns, I gain understanding of content!
theres nothing wrong for being passionate about math or science. If someone calls you a dork or a nerd for humbly engaging in learning these subjects they are likely to be insecure about their own intelligence. thank you for being so encouraging.
Just recently found your videos. I always loved math and was very good at it. Now you are helping me to study again. I am doing it to help my daughter with College calculus. Thank you for being such a great teacher and making it easy for a lot of kids who are just pre-disposed to be afraid of Math here in USA.
I wasn’t a math major before I started watching your videos. Then I took Calc 1 & 2 and finally “got it”. Now I’m about to graduate with a master’s in math. Anyone can do math; I remember bombing in high school. All it takes is a good teacher and some encouragement from someone like this man.
I don't recommend that people do this but for some reason I've been putting off Calculus 3 for much of the last third of the semester and as a result had no clue or motivation to learn what surface integrals, divergence, flux, curl, etc were. That was until a couple days ago. It was great you posted this video when you did because it really gave me the confidence and encouragement to sit down and actually learn the stuff for the final. So the day before my final I binge watched all of your chapter 15 videos for that class and MAN was that a life saver. Not only did I get excited to actually learn the content, but I also almost completely forgot that I had a final in less then 24 hours that I still needed to learn a third's semester of content for! Needless to say, I went into that final with no sleep but with all the knowledge and understanding of the material imparted by you and your amazing teaching style. I couldn't have gotten that A without your videos, and encouragement :) . Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. You truly are the greatest professor, and I can say that with confidence.
Hi Professor Leonard. I'm a mature student in Greece, studying for a BSc in Psychology. Your lectures on statistics got me through the basics, giving meaning and making it easy to learn. You are now famous amongst my college classmates in Greece who are getting valuable help watching your tutorials :-) As a teacher myself, I have to say, your style of teaching is an example to follow for all teachers. You're making a huge impact on students (and teachers) around the world. Thank you!
I found professor Leonard this past February when I began a statistics class that began in January. I learned everything in this corse through you. We use rstudio which has this traditional way of learning statistics more about coding than apply formulas and solving by hand. I was taking my final tonight and your encouragement email popped up. It made me smile and relax as I was stuck on a problem. After I finished my final I listened to your message. I feel like you popped into my inbox at the right time with a message that speaks to my exact experience with this course. Thank you for doing these videos and explaining in such clear detail that anyone can learn math.
I am approaching 100 years old and Math has never been my forte. However, I appreciate this message and I hope that your students will also. Maybe if I had received this type of encouragement at a young age, especially from teachers since I do not come from an educated family, my life would hv bn different, ...maybe even better. Thanks.
Holy sh*t!! Professor Leonard, you’re such an inspirational person. Every word you said is true. Not everyone is good at math, but everyone can learn if the effort is there. This video just came around the right time when finals are about to start. A lot of students are struggling they often feel stupid because they don’t understand concepts, but your approach is the right way. Education is suppose to be a fun, safe environment where all students have equal opportunity and are not judged by their peers. Many students feel intimidated at times when they can’t comprehend some concepts, and it leads to anxiety and self hate. Many students feel this way including me, but you’re lectures give a second opportunity to students. Thank you so much ☺️. Positivity is the only thing needed in this world.
Professor Leonard, your videos inspired me to make an effort and work hard in this subject. I recently graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and I want to thank you for all the great content you have put on your channel. You’re guidance and expertise in this field has paved the road to my success in mathematics and in obtaining my engineering degree. i truly enjoyed watching your videos through out my college career. From the bottom of my heart i thank you for the inspiration you have given me.
Thank you for your time, patience and consideration for the 'You Tube' students! This 63yr old student has learned with great ease and comfort from your videos. Your attention to detail and explicit explanations of 'why' the preliminaries and outcomes should be the way they are, is sublime. As a BSCE student from U.N.O, I wasn't expected to take Calculus 3. However, over the summer of '18 and all these years, I was intrigued by your teaching method. I took detailed notes, pausing your videos to jot down the work you displayed on the board - I was captivated by your clear explanations. I continue to this day to go over this exciting subject and enjoy the deeper understanding of my static, dynamics and structural analysis courses from school. You are a treasured and well respected. May God give you the strength and determination to carry on !
I'm older than you are, Prof Leonard, and a teacher of English. But I pursue maths as a hobby - mathematics is, after all, another language. I just want to thank you very much for your lucid and systematic approach; the trouble you take explaining concepts to us; and the sense of humour that you possess that does offer a little 'relief' from the tension of concentrating on maths. Thanks so much for enabling me to get my fundamentals in order and for making me love maths more and more each day. Incidentally, in India, where I come from, loving maths is 'cool'!
Prof. Leonard, I graduate next week! The only reason why I passed my Stats. class, was you! Thank you!!! You're an amazing person! Please never stop doing what you're doing! We appreciate you so much!
I felt that. (Tears trickled down my cheek). Especially the part where profs just go through the lectures fast and say "Oh well, too bad." When I'm "too slow" to understand it :(
Your videos were of great help to me during my freshman year and your message in this video is a noble one that deserve nothing less than admiration. Thank you professor Leonard for what you are doing it's a life changer for many students from all over the world! Writing this from KFUPM Saudi Arabia
Who and what every professor should be! He doesn’t do it for the check nor the statue! He does it so that we students can have a check as well statue one day!
I have my Diff Eq final tomorrow and could not have seen this video at a better time. It is 100% thanks to professor Leonard that I got through Cal and now Diff Eq. I was never a “math person” but really feel like I am now and am so grateful for these videos. Professor Leonard is an amazing human.
This is the first year in my life ever doing calculus. With your help I am taking calculus 3 and I still can’t believe it. I think it’s a beautiful class but my tests are out of this world! I have a professor that shits on American culture for not being mathematically literate out of high school. His tests are pretty damn hard and he boasts most of this content is not even ‘real thinking’. It’s been an uphill battle with his terrible tests but I’m still in the game because of you professor Leonard! I would love to have the privilege to have a professor who treats our learning with respect like you!
I am from Saudi Arabia. I love you. I love your way of teaching. You make the most difficult concepts look really easy & doable. You are patient; I can tell. You spend a lot of time preparing your lectures to be exceptionally well delivered. But we should admit that part of this is talent & not every teacher is talented. In general Math is difficult especially pure math & higher math, but being difficult does not mean it is not beautiful & enjoyable. I love math & through your videos you made me love it more & more & more. Thanks prof leonard. You are my role model ♥️
